Election fever is definitely not in the air. When Gomantak Times caught up with common people at Mapusa and Panaji bus stand on 18 and 19 March, nearly half of them showed a lack of enthusiasm for the polls scheduled for 26 April. (GT) GOVT ACCUSED OF VIOLATING POLL CODE: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Luizinho Faleiro yesterday (Mach 19) charged the government of using and misusing government machinery including government officers thereby violating the election code of conduct which is currently in force in the state. (H) OPPN YET TO FINALISE CANDIDATE FOR N GOA: With Lok Sabha elections entering the home stretch and the BJP already finalizing its candidates in both the Lok Sabha constituencies, the Opposition Congress is yet to name its candidate to take on the BJP's Mr Shripad Naik in North Goa. (NT) JP BACKS MGP: The Janata Party yesterday appealed to the MGP to come out openly from the three-party alliance and contest the North Goa seat and assured it all support during the ensuing polls. (GT) JP TO KEEP DISTANCE FROM UGDP: Janata Party Goa State Working President Trajano D'Mello on Friday stated that the Janata Party had decided to distance itself from the UGDP, following reports that the UGDP is "dancing to the tune" of the BJP. D'Mello also refuted the claim made by South Goa Congress candidate Churchill Alemao that the Janata Party had offered him Rs.2.5 crore to contest the Lok Sabha elections on the Janata Party ticket, claiming on the contrary that it was Alemao who "offered himself for sale". (H) NEW-BORN CHILD FOUND DEAD: A new-born child was found dead in a cashew plantation of one Harishchandra Velingkar at Rautegin, Bambolim. Following a clue, the Agassaim police used the dog squad. The canines led the police some distance away to the site where the female child was found, draped in a sari. (GT) OFFICIALS PROMOTE LAND GRABBING: Porvorim, located ideally between the two important towns of Panaji and Mapusa, and placed atop and idyllic plateau, attracted the attention of settlers-and therefore of builders-many years ago. Today, Porvorim proliferates in illegal constructions thanks to the opportunism of local bodies and government agencies. Long-time residents and activists of Porvorim point to different kinds of illegalities here perpetrated by vested interests with tacit support from government officials and elected representatives. (Joaquim Fernandes in NT) CANACONA COUNCIL BUDGET: Canacona Municipal Council has presented a surplus budget for the year 2004-05 showing an income of Rs.1,89,70,842 while the proposed expenditure is pegged at Rs.1,74,28,050. (GT) FREE STAY FOR BAINA SEX WORKERS: After free ration, it's now free stay for the commercial sex workers at the red light area of Baina (in Vasco). And, those demanding "rent" from the gharwalis or the sex workers could even face punishment as per the law, so says the government. The government's contention is simple: the land where the 250-odd cubicles, standing at the red light area, either belongs to the government or the civic body. Hence, no other person has the right to collect rent from the occupants of the cubicles. (H) INTRODUCE ENGLISH FROM STANDARD I: The Goa Pradesh Congress Education Cell has suggested that English subject be introduced from standard I onwards and that Goa State Council for Education, Research and Training be granted total autonomy. (GT) GOVT URGED TO ALTER FISHING BAN PERIOD: Zuari Fishermen Marketing Co-operative Society chairman Xavier D'Souza stated that the fishing ban period has crippled fishermen's occupation and business activities at large in the state. He asked the government to alter the ban period by taking into confidence all the committee members of the various fishing societies in Goa. (GT) LIBRARY IN ARPORA: The village of Arpora, home to one of the first English-language schools in North Goa, has recently set up a public library. Promoted by villagers, with support from others, this facility is expected to boost the reading habit in the area. (H) RAIA SARPANCH OUSTED: Raia Sarpanch Flory Monteiro was on Friday ( March 19) ousted form office in a no-trust motion. At a specially convened meeting, the no trust motion tables by five panchayat members was carried by 5-0 votes. Monteiro and three other panchas abstained. (H) IN BORIM: Borim Sarpanch Supriya Naik was ousted in a no-confidence motion on Friday by 5-0 votes. (H) GOA STATE MUSEUM: The long history of a small geographical entity called Goa showcased with exhibits at the Goa State Museum, a prestigious project of world importance, is yet to attract tourists, both domestic and foreign. Is it a museum or a morgue? The State government agencies both academic and those connected with tourism promotion have failed to motivate people to visit this centre of great heritage and knowledge. Housed in a stately edifice at the Pato Plaza, a massive commercial complex along the Rua de Ourem canal, the museum has seven spacious galleries.
