(H) ARCHBISHOP TO BE INSTALLED ON MARCH 21: Archbishop-Patriarch designate Filipe Neri Ferrao is expected to be installed as the 34th Archbishop of Goa and Daman at the Se Cathedral in Old Goa on March 21. The catholic faithful will witness this ceremony after a gap of over 25 years. (H) UPMARKET TOURIST DESTINATION: Marketing the State as leisure and charter destination brand has done more harm to this beautiful place then anything else, which in turn, is responsible for attracting hoards of cheap tourists, who are not able to spend as much as the State expects from them. Besides, the attitude of the service providers in the tourism sector, the display of their unfriendly body language while interacting with the tourists, and absence of overall basic courtesy are primarily responsible for preventing the visitors to Goa from coming back to the 'Pearl of the Oriente'. These were the observations made by Mr Gour Kanjilal, the regional director of Indiatourism, Mumbai, for western and central India, while suggesting that Goa should now be projected as an upmarket destination. "That would attract the tourists linked to multi-national companies and give way for corporate tourism," he said. (GT) COLVALE LAND FOR EDUCATIONAL ESTATE: The government has taken steps for acquiring the land at Colvale for the proposed Educational Estate by making applicable the urgency clause in land Acquisition Act. Plans are also afoot to set up the second educational estate at Dhargalim. (GT) CONSTRUCTION OF RIBANDAR BRIDGE TO COMMENCE: The Minister for Public Works department, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavlikar, announced that a bridge would be constructed at Ribandar, at an estimated cost of Rs.2.50 crore, which would relieve the Patto-Ribandar culvert of the heavy traffic. Mr Dhavlikar was speaking at the 3-day centenary celebrations of the traditional tiatr at Fonduvem in Ribandar. (GT) GKA GRANT FOR KONKANI WRITERS: The Editorial Board of Goa Konkani Akademi has selected 19 Devnagiri Konkani manuscripts for publication for which the Akademi will give 75 per grants. GKA had invited Konkani manuscripts from Amateur Konkani writers under the 'Poilo Chonvor Scheme' for the year 2003-04. The two books in Roman script were by Filomena Samfrancisco and Romeo Almeida. (GT) SERULA COMUNIDADE ELECTION: The elections for the new managing committee of the Comunidade of Serula for the triennium 2004-2007 will be held at the Socorro panchayat on 25 January. (GT) CHILD FACTOR IN MARRIAGE: Grapping with problems of alcoholism and even dowry harassment, women opt to stay in a marriage often to ensure their children have two parents. Sometimes they stay on because of financial insecurity or fear of losing their children, as those working in the field say. Prachi Khandeparkar of the Porvorim-based family guidance centre, Sangath, says that based on the cases she comes across, women want to stay in the marriage sometimes because of the 'child factor'. According to the recent edition of "Renovacao", those priests appointed as parish priests include Fr Ubaldo Fernandes (SFX) at Our Lady of Piety Parish, Silvassa; Fr Agapito D'Cunha (SFX) at St Michael's Parish, Anjuna; Fr Tadeu D'Silva (SFX) at Our Lady of Remedies Parish, Moti Daman; Fr Andrew D'Costa (SFX) at St Francis Xavier's Parish, Dada-Nagara Haveli; and Fr Navis D'Souza (SFX) at Immaculate Conception parish, Diu. The municipal hall, which saw many a debate and meetings in the 100-year-old history of the civic body, will acquire a new look. The building is located in the conservation zone, and like other heritage structures, is under decay for want attention. Like elsewhere, urban residents feel helpless when areas are taken over by slums, and open places are covered by apparently unchallengeable religious shrines mushrooming in the area. The Father of the Opinion Poll, Dr Sequeira, was the ex-MLA of the St Cruz Constituency for two consecutive terms. He was the Opposition leader and political with a high profile and represented St Cruz and Panjim on three occasions.
