CONG ALLEGES SPYING ON MINISTERS TOO: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee
president and MLA Luizinho Faleiro yesterday alleged that the State
government too was spying on the activities and movements of three cabinet
ministers. He, however, refused to disclose the names of these ministers but
claimed that one of the ministers hails from North Goa while two were from
South Goa. He also declined to comment when asked whether the trio belonged
to the coalition partners. (GT)

CONG SEEKING UNITY IN A DIVIDED SOUTH: Unlike the BJP, the Congress is
grappling with the task of bringing various disparate groups and
individuals, especially in Salcete, to rally behind the party nominee
Churchill Alemao in South Goa as the pre-poll campaign draws near. (H)

GOVT POLITICISING POLICE: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho
Faleiro, yesterday (March 25) charged the Manohar Parrikar-led government in
the State for politicizing the police machinery and flayed the Chief
Minister for his face-saving tactics of blaming the Congress party of a
conspiracy in the 'spying' episode. (H)

3 OFFICERS SHORTLISTED FOR N GOA COLLECTOR'S POST: Following the Election
Commission's directive to find out a new incumbent for the office of North
Goa district collector, the state administration has forwarded the names of
three senior officers-Mr Amit Yadav (secretary, agriculture), Mr PS Reddy
(managing director, EDC) and Mr SP Dixit (Special secretary, home) to it.

TOURIST MEETS WATERY GRAVE: A 61-year-old Russian man holidaying in Goa met
a watery grave at Cavelossim beach on March 26 afternoon. Pursenov Vladislor
arrived in Goa around eight days back with his family and was putting up at
a five-star hotel in Cavelossim. Yesterday he ventured into the Arabian Sea
at around 1 pm and was pulled in by the undercurrents. (GT)

JILTED LOVER HANGS TO DEATH: A jilted lover from Amonem-Poinguinim,
reportedly committed suicide on Thursday morning barely hours after his
girl-friend got engaged to another person. Ulhas Gurko Daikar (25), employed
in a private firm at Bhatpal, hanged himself about 100 metres from his
residence. (H)

TEACHERS HOLD RALLY: The All-Goa Secondary School Teachers Association
organized a morcha of around 3000 teachers from all over the State, on March
25, in Panjim, for highlighting their grievances and pressing the demands.

TEACHER APOLOGIZES: A 10-year-old student of a school in Balli was beaten,
not for answering in Konkani, as reported, but for teasing the teacher's
daughter, sources said. The teacher later apologized at a special PTA
meeting called on 23 March to discuss the issue. The teacher hit the girl
with a ruler on her back and twisted her ear. Another student, who started
crying was also punished. (GT)

SAND EXTRACTORS DRIVEN AWAY: Sand extraction, rampant in Haldankarwada,
Poroscodem, had to be discontinued as the locals managed to drive away some
workers involved in this activity, which has caused immense damage to the
river bed of the Terekhol river. (GT)

JET INTERNATIONAL GETS AWARD: Jet International Travels and Tours, Margao,
has been awarded the Certificate of Excellence by Indian Airlines for the
year 2003 for its performance in international sales. Mr Edwin Gomindes of
Jet International Travels received the award from Mr MK Mukhopadhyay,
officiating general manager (commercial) eastern region, Indian Airlines, in
the presence of Mr SK Ghorai, regional Director, Indian Airlines and Mr
Melvin D'Silva, station manager, Indian Airlines, Goa, at a function held on
board the 'Royal Cruises' in Panaji.

DIALLING '95': The '95' call you make to relatives and friends in Mumbai, in
fact, costs four times as much as a local call does. The lack of adequate
awareness on this and a dozen other facilities offered by BSNL were
animatedly discussed at an 'open house session' held in Panjim on March 25.

BAINA OUT OF THE RED: The Mormugao Port Trust is gearing up to set up India'
s only state-of-the-art international cruise passenger terminal at 'Baina
Bay' by 2006. Even as MPT officials are examining the options provided to
them by the project consultants, Delhi-based Consulting Engineering Services
India, plans are being made to initiate the tendering process by April this
year. The project, estimated to cost about Rs.200 crore, envisages a
full-fledged terminal with customs and immigration counters, conveyor belts
for luggage, waiting lounges and a 450-metre-long pier that will be able to
accommodate even the biggest of cruise liners. There is also a proposal to
set up a Duty Free shopping center at the terminal. (GT)

KR TO CARRY OUT STUDY IN SAUDI: The Konkan Railway has received a major
boost when it was asked by Saudi Arabia to produce a study for a monorail in
the holy city of Mecca, to ease the crowd congestion during the annual Hal
Pilgrimage. (H)

KONKANI AND HINDI MELODIES LULL CUNCOLIM: Cuncolim literally came to a
standstill on 23 March as the entire village poured into Mardicatta to
witness Hindi and Konkani singing at its best. This was a fitting tribute to
late Prakash Vaidya, a singer par excellence. Noted film actress and singer
Goa-born Varsha Usgaonkar brought the whole stage down with her melodious
voice. Veteran Konkani singer Ulhas Buyanv was at his best while budding
Goan singers followed suit in what proved to be a marvellous symphony of old

GOA EARNS ON "USS BOXER" VISIT: The calling of foreign naval vessels at
Mormugao Port seems to have the economic pundits smiling due to revenue
generated with the number of days the vessel docks in the State. The
four-day stay of "USS Boxer" earned the State over 200,000 US dollars
(approx Rs.90 lakh). Capt Bruno D'Souza of JM Baxi, who was the host for the
USS Boxer, stated that the Berth 8-the oil berth-was found to be very useful
for handling naval vessels. (H)

LAND OWNER ALSO LIABLE: The Goa State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission
in a significant judgement has held that the land owner, who has entrusted
his property to the building for development, is also liable to the
prospective purchasers of the flats along with the builder, if the builder
commits any deficiency in service. Suhasrao Govekar, Rashant Malvankar, Raju
Kamat along with others booked flats in a building constructed by a builder
at Curchorem. As the builder failed to complete the building and execute the
sale deeds, the prospective purchasers of the flats through Adv Rajesh
Narvekar approached the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum and filed
a complaint against the builder and the owner of the land. (H)

SPOTLIGHT ON "LIMELIGHT" FROM TOMORROW: Goa's first and only English
language television programme "Limelight" will be launched under the TV Goa
banner in the state on 27 March. It will be telecast in the state on cable
TV, twice a week-on Saturdays and Sundays-for half-an-hour at 8 pm. TV Goa
has been established by Lokendra Singh, the Goa special correspondent for
the TV News agency-ANI-Reuters. He will coordinate the project. Rajesh Singh

GOA RECORDS LOWEST SALE OF CIGARETTES: The tobacco industry as a whole is
very important to the country since it employs over 35 million people and
contributes Rs.6,000 crore to the exchequer.In terms of total volumes Andhra
Pradesh is the highest state with Goa being the lowest. But in terms of the
per capita consumption Haryana and Kerala are among the lowest in the

DOCUMENTARY ON BIRDS: Doordarshan Kendra, Panjim, will telecast on March 26,
a documentary on migratory birds at 6.30 pm. The documentary is shot on
various locations in Goa that are famous for migratory birds from places
like Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Russia. Exotic species of birds
unknown to the common man will be on view in the documentary. (H)

SEMINAR TO HONOUR SHENOI GOEMBAB: Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, is organizing
a seminar on 3 and 4 April in Mumbai to commemorate Shenoi Goembab, the
pioneer of modern Konkani literature. Eminent writer and academician, KJ
Purohit will inaugurate the seminar, the theme for which is "Pioneers of
literature and transition to modernity". Dr Maria Aurora Couto will deliver

UK ENVOY IS IN GOA: The British Deputy High Commissioner at Mumbai, Ian Noel
Hughes, is on a visit to the State in connection with the arrival of the
Royal Navy warship HMS Gloucester. (GT)

CROWNING GLORY FOR VANESSA? After Rita Faria won the Miss India in 1965,
there was a lull of Goan beauties being noticed on the national and
international arena. Now, Goa is again making "refreshing" waves in Mumbai.
This Saturday among the 29 finalists for the Ponds Miss India contest, the
Carnival Queen of last year, cheerful and impulsive Vanessa Rodrigues, a
20-year-old from Candolim, is the only Goan among the beauties chosen from
over 6,000 entries, for the grand finale to take place on March 27. (Herald
