GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 26 Nov 2003 HELMETS FOR RIDERS: Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar has reiterated that wearing of helmets for two-wheeler riders would be made compulsory from January next year. He said the decision had been taken since the government has filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court at Goa in the wake of a petition regarding the use of helmets in the State. The Transport department has withdrawn the notification granting relaxation to two-wheeler riders within city limits and those riding below 40 kms on highways. (GT)
RELIANCE POWER SEEKS MERGER WITH BSES: In a move that could have significant ramifications for Goa's power section, the State's sole independent power producer, Reliance Salgaocar Power Co Ltd (RSPCL), is seeking to merge with its parent company, Bombay Suburban Electricity services. RSPCL has a 48 megawatts capacity plant at Sancoale that is 100 per cent operational and has a power-purchase agreement with the Goa government. (H) COLVALE VILLAGERS UP IN ARMS: City dwellers should not enjoy at the cost of health of Colvale villagers by dumping garbage of the entire North Goa at the proposed site in Colvale, stated the village Sarpanch, Mr Nilkant Halankar. He said if the villagers do not oppose the move, then it will pose serious threat to their health. "How can the government take such a step without consulting the village panchayat?" he quipped. (NT) GOVT TO REVIEW MOVE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said legal and technical advice will be seriously considered on whether the State should intervene in RSPCL's petition in the Bombay High Court at Goa seeking merger with BSES. In the wake of criticism over lack of information about the beautification of Mala lake project by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation, Dhume had agreed to the request of GPF for a site inspection on Tuesday. (H) RESURVEY OF LAND RECORDS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will launch the resurvey work of land records at a function to be held at Miramar Circle at 9.30 am today. The actual survey will start from 1 December this year within the city limits of Panaji and Taleigao village. It will be taken up ward-wise, and is expected to be completed in about three to four months' time. (GT) EXCISE OFFICER CONVICTED: The First Additional Sessions Court has convicted a high-ranking official of the Central Excise Department, Estaquio Misquita of Mapusa, of attempted murder. Misquita was charged with having shot at his neighbour Minu Barucha on October 28, 1996, while in an inebriated state. (H) INJURED IN ROAD MISHAP: Two persons were injured in a scooter accident at Sucaldem. (NT) MISSING: One Joaozinho Goes, aged 45, who was working on a trawler, is missing from Sarzora. (NT) WOMAN HELD: A woman, Muktabai Samant, was arrested by the Quepem police on charges of harassing her daughter-in-law, Anuja Deepak Samat who had married Deepak in 1999, for dowry. Anuja also accused her husband and his brothers of a similar offence. (H) 'BRIDE' TAKEN FOR A RIDE: Lured by the promises of marriage, a 30-year-old woman of Neturlim-Sanguem ended up handing over her jewellery worth about Rs.12,000 to her prospective bridegroom. The man has disappeared with her jewellery, but the woman is hopeful that he would return and honour his promise of marriage. (H) TO BENEFIT JOBLESS YOUTH: The Chief Minister's Rozghar Yojana has been recast by mooting easier repayment and other facilities in a bid to encourage more jobless youth to take up self-employment. Persons in the age group of 20 to 40 years, eighth standard passed or with other technical qualifications, with an annual family income of less than Rs.80,000 will be eligible, for a loan of maximum Rs.2 lakh including 50 per cent share capital. (GT) PIANO COMPETITION: The Florinda Heredia Correa Memorial Piano Competition organised by the Kala Academy, Panaji, will be held on November 28 at 4 pm at the Black Box, Kala Academy. (NT) MANDO DOWN BUT NOT QUITE OUT: The subtle mando dance, one of the prominent forms of Goan culture, seems to have been losing out to contemporary forms of entertainment. This is evident from the poor response the mando festival has received in the last few years. But as Panjim gears for another evening of the mando today (November 26), the question uppermost on the minds of organisers and mando enthusiasts is whether things could indeed change. Over the years, participation on the part of younger generation has reduced considerably, and those who grew up in changing times seem to be interested in scintillating forms of entertainment. And although the Ponda Municipal Council, in a bid to eradicate this issue has purchased 8,000 square metres at Kerim, the issue is far from over. Presently, the PMC dumps all waste at Curti. This has raised the heckles of the Curti-Khandepar panchayat with Sarpanch Bhikka Kerkar strongly objecting to this. (GT) FORUM TO EXPOSE LOCAL PROBLEMS: The Pomburpa-Olaulim Citizens Forum, formed by a group of pro-active concerned citizens, has been aggressively voicing out grievance of the people and demanding action on various issues. At its monthly meeting at Pomburpa on Sunday, the inefficient functioning of the electricity department was highlighted. (H) EDUCATION ON THE MAT: Over the past fortnight, some of the stories emerging from the educational front give cause for surprise, if not shock. On November 10, we learnt from news reports that the Goa Board plans to sell answer-papers of toppers for a price. Last weekend, a section of the Goa press quoted the Goa Board as having "warned publishers" against publishing question paper sets of their HSSC and SSC exams. To complete this strange trio of education-related stories, our Chief Minister has gone on record-on a televised phone-in programme, at that-saying that subjects like History are "non-utilitarian". He reportedly went along with the view that the government should consider doing away with this subject!
