(H) CONSTITUTION IN KONKANI: CM Parrikar said that his government was extending full financial support to the Goa Konkani Academy and efforts for development of Konkani language. He said any kind of extreme insistences was harmful and reiterated that the language should be made easy to learn and write, so that all people can accept it. He was speaking as a chief guest at a function organised in Panaji on 26 January to release the Konkani translation of the Constitution of India. (GT) MARATHI IMBROGLIO: Addressing at the two-day 25 Gomantak Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, at EDC ground, Patto, on January 24, Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, observed that languages do not teach rivalry, and added that "the role of Marathi in preserving the cultural assets of Goa is extraordinary and the protagonists of Konkani language are deliberately overlooking the aspect". He further mentioned that the guidance of Marathi language for preserving the State's identity has proved very important and the Goan Marathi language is unique in itself, as it makes use of the words as well as the grammar, which is prevalent in Konkani language. The Chief Minister also pointed out that there are around 90 primary schools running in Marathi medium in the State, in comparison to only 50 Konkani medium schools at the same educational level. (H) GOAN LIFESTYLE 'PROBLEMATIC': Goa's health indicators may be the best in the country, but the emerging and changing lifestyles has thrown up a host of social problems, says Health secretary, Ms Debashree Mukherjee. Addressing a region meet of Lions Club, Mukherjee said that the incidence of diabetes, hyper-tension, drug dependence, alcoholism, mental illness is a direct cause of the changing lifestyles. "All these are critical issues afflicting Goan society today," she said, adding that Goa's health indicators are the best in the country, even comparable with Kerala. (H) WHERE DO MARATHI AND KONKANI STAND THEN? Even after 42 years of freedom, Goan political ethos has refused to make any significant change though the parties have altered their hues. Consequently, Goa's representative identity is still a far cry in the wilderness.Parrikar has now spoken of his plans to introduce local languages in the Montessori schools. But, there is a mismatch here again. If you are going to patronize local languages for the sake of general public and allow the rich to send their wards to English medium schools then the latter would stand to benefit because they would be well versed with the official language of the administration which is English. Where do Marathi and Konkani stand then?
