Under the banner: "China, History Culture and Business", the courses run Sept 22-23 and Oct 6-7 and aim to "give participants information on a range of subjects relating to the Chinese reality, allowing them to maximize chances of success in the approach to the market." The Confucius Institute has been established at the Minho University in northern Portugal since July and has undertaken joint projects with various Chinese higher-education institutions. The course will be given by the institute's director, Sun Lan, and its Chinese-language teacher, Luis Cabral. China is a country of which companies must have a higher than normal level of awareness, noted Cabral, and the Asian state is presently experiencing a "very profound" social and psychological transformation. These changes are a result of globalization and many western ideas are being "assimilated by the Chinese people", he added. The courses are targeted at businessmen, company chiefs and senior management and the knowledge gained will give "some interesting tools, which will undoubtedly facilitate understanding of the other side by those establishing business relations", said Cabral. China's deputy education minister, Wu Qidi, visited the Minho University last week, when the college's rector said he wanted to expand science and technology partnerships with China and involve Portuguese companies in the project.
