In a book written on Francis Newton Souza, Geeta Kapur referred to the time
period when Newton returned to Bombay from
Goa to live with his mother, Lily Mary, after his recovery from small pox:

Quote: .......... he returned to live in Bombay with his mother who had by now
set herself up as a dress-maker. Being
exceptionally clever in the art of needlework, she managed slowly to establish
what was called the 'Institute of Needle Craft
and Domestic Science'. From this she earned enough to see her son through
school and college. Unquote

My understanding is that Lily Mary not only sowed stylish clothes for the
Europeans living in Bombay but also undertook
fine point needlework for robes for priests.

In one of the interviews with Francis Newton Souza he described in graphic
detail the surroundings in which he
grew up as a child in Bombay and how he later captured these in his artistic
work.
