Oh Yes! There is a Goan Restaurant in or around Toronto, after all!

On Saturday, we went out to eat at Dom’s Kitchen, a small East Indian/Goan restaurant in Mississauga (a suburb of Toronto), Ontario.

I had heard about this place at Viva Goa and also through a friend of mine and it was well recommended. So I took along my wife and a good friend of mine, Senhor Lyn Souza-Marques and his lovely wife Monica to try it out.

This Restaurant is situated at 1177 Central Parkway West, Unit # 9, Golden Square Centre, Mississauga, Ontario L5C 4P3, Canada. This location is about one block south of Burnhamthorpe/CreditView intersection on Central Parkway. Tel: 905-275-0110 email owner Dom Fonseca at:

We were welcomed by their hostess and were later met by Merlyka, who gave us more details about the restaurant and its history and about the chef, Dominic Fonseca, her father. She threw some light about their Bombay East Indian/Goan background which culminated in the development of the unique style and taste for this specialized cuisine.

As we had arrived at 4 pm, we were asked to wait for a while until the dishes were warmed up. Then we lined up for the sumptuous buffet.

The buffet consisted of dishes of Tendlim (gerkins) , French beans, Aloo-ghobi (potato-cauli-flower), King-fish ambottik, Shrimp curry, Sorpotel, Goa Sausage Chilly Fry, Beef Kofta Curry and Basmati rice.

We filled our plate with all of the above and sat at the table. Merlyka brought us a serving of hot Naans and we were ready to dig in. At the end of our meal she came back with a serving of vermicelli pudding for dessert. She also mentioned sometimes there is even a dish of crab xec-xec for buffet, depending on its availability,

I tasted bit by bit of each item along with the curry and everything tasted just delicious. Every item was cooked to perfection with a back-home taste. The salt and spices were perfectly blended and there was nothing that I could complain about the food and its preparation. I only wish that they use a little more vinegar/lime juice in their sorpotel and Goa Sausage Fry dishes as we Sashttikars like more acidity in our sorpotel and Goa Sausage. Otherwise I would say this is the best food I tasted in any Restaurant in Toronto. I would give it a perfect “10” in terms of taste, quality, variety, number of dishes and cost.

Even my wife who is a super cook had only the best words to say about this food. Even Senhor Lyn Souza-Marques who is a best critic of anything Goan, be it Goan Konkani Tiatro or Goan food, was very ecstatic about the food in this restaurant. His wife Monica just loved the food. In short the food at Dom’s Kitchen is unbelievable. It is very tasty and perfect and costs only $6.99 per person (for lunch or dinner, anytime).

Just a word of caution for some Goans who love to drink. There is no liquor served at this restaurant. Merlyka said they want to keep it as a family restaurant at least for now. This place is small and seats about 40 people comfortably. It is very clean, with modest decoration and comes with no frills and has a high ceiling.

For this price, you will not find anything better in this area. They do catering for a minimum of 25 people. Their prices are reasonable, and they do delivery and they have take-out.

So for all those visitors to Toronto, and for all the bored families and their Canadian friends in Toronto, this is a good place to treat your family to a fine dinner at a budget-conscious Goan restaurant in Missisauga. Remember to call Dom for more details. There is no buffet on Tuesday and Wednesday (11am-5 pm). Thursday-Saturday 11am – 9 pm. Sunday 12 pm – 4 pm. Closed on Mondays.

Enjoy!
