- On 31st December, 1974 i.e over 45 years ago the Indo-Portuguese treaty was signed. Portugal recognised the full sovereignity of India over then Goa Daman & Diu besides Dadra Nagar Haveli . Hence whether Goa, Daman & Diu besides Dadra Nagar Haveli was annexed, liberated, conquered on 19th December, 1961 after 451 years of Portuguese rule commencing on 25th November 1510 is akin to a freedom fighter in one country being labelled a terrorist by the other - The visit of President of India R Venkatraman to Portugal in 1990 and visit of his counter part Mario Soares to India in 1992 has further sealed the distrust between the two nations - The only valid point which in the humble opinion of this writer can continue as a point for arm chair debate is how could a country like India adopt armed intervention over the Portuguese dominions which existed 440 years before India became a Republic in 1950. - Thus before the emergence of the NEW INDIA on 15th August, 2022 lets us usher in a new era in Goa with a changed mindset. - History will always be recorded at various foras but thats all Godfrey J.
