Goanet mourns the passing of Jorge de Abreu Noronha in Portugal - Nov 27/07 http://tinyurl.com/2dk2bl http://tinyurl.com/29kpdx --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tony de Sa wrote: "Moira abounds in ghanttis. Startling? No a fact of life today. These ghanttis have been 'imported' by two contractors who are working on heritage houses which are being remodelled into hotels/ guest houses. One is an influential Delhi-ite Sardarji who was pulled up by our local Panch for violating power restrictions on the use of machinery after dark. The other is a mysterious figure who, according to the Panch, is building an illegal swimming pool. But that is another story......." This seems the formula of success in Goa, principally for non-Goans: cheap real estate deals, rock bottom migrant labor costs, next to no political and health oversight by local authorities, and a big return on the tourist market. My niece recently gave up going to Goa for the Christmas holidays because a room in a modest hotel by the beach, run by a non-Goan, was going for $700 a night. Tony should be more concerned that it is not Goans who are buying up and fixing heritage houses for such great investment deals.
