I've been exposed to Arabic all my life, yet I can't speak a word beyond Ahlan Wa Sahlan. I've learnt French throughout my school years and tutor myself everyday, yet it takes me at least two minutes to formulate a sentence in French and despite serious efforts I still cannot follow or respond to a conversation by native French speakers. I can however read it as easily as I would English. It has something to do with how the brain processes languages. English and Konkani are the only two languages my mind can process with fluidity, switching with ease between the two of them. In all probability you will never speak Konkani fluently but don't let anyone tell you that makes you any less Goan.
