Preetu Nair & Peter De Souza PANJIM/INDIA: The swadeshi v/s videshi war is just getting hotter in Goa. But the competition is not between two warring parties, but between the desi girls and gori mems, trying to survive in the oldest profession under the aegis of tourism. Our investigations reveal that the Russian mafia is not just involved in real estate deals and drug trade; they have extended their tentacles into the flourishing flesh trade in the tourist state. Young Russian, Yugoslavian and Romanian girls, sometimes minors, are being trafficked into Goa for commercial sexual exploitation. With the increasing demand of dove-eyed, fair beauties from customers, who are upmarket tourists, local and international, ready to pay $ 1000 (Rs 45,000) or more for a night, the supply of girls to Goa has also increased. Police officers, on condition of anonymity, allege that the trade is flourishing in Morjim and the customers are mostly high-class tourists and even rich locals who hire the girls either to give them company in the hotel room or to accompany them to Russian rave parties, mostly organised in Morjim and Saligao. It is reliably learnt that the gori mems are dropped and picked up from the hotels in luxurious vehicles, which is driven by local boys. These boys, it is alleged are also involved in the drug trade. Chairperson of Women's Commission Dr Pramod Salgaonkar agreed that trafficking of girls from foreign shores for flesh trade is prevalent in Goa. "I am aware of this and we intend to take steps to prevent all kind of trafficking of persons for commercial sexual exploitation," she added. However, DGP BS Brar said, "I have no specific information. But if the police are aware, then they would have been definitely arrested". The three main protagonists of the "videshi" flesh trade: * Name: Tasha Nationality : Russian Presently residing in: Morjim Job Profile : Besides, supplying girls for the flesh trade, it is also alleged that he has invested a lot of money in real estate and agricultural property in Goa. * Name: Leon Nationality : Russian Presently residing in: Morjim Job Profile: Alleged to be a notorious drug dealer in Russia, he was convicted for indulging in the drug trade in Russia. However, after finishing a long prison term in Russia, he migrated to safer pastures and is now operating in Goa. He has also allegedly invested in real estate in Goa. * Name: Julian Nationality : Russian Presently residing in: Pernem Job Profile : Alleged to be the brain behind the flourishing flesh racket, she is also involved in property dealings and supplies drugs at discos and pubs in North Goa. Young, local boys who act as "liaison officers" between the three main protagonists-Tasha, Julian and Leon-and the VIP clients always escort her. It is also alleged that she rents the car used for taking girls around for "the job" and even hires rooms from local hoteliers and rents it to high paying customers. It is reliably learnt that she operates from a controversial nightclub in Saligao and spends maximum amount of time at cyber cafes to transact deals and invite new clients to Goa. Interesting Fact: She is protected by a "top" police officer from the Goa police, who is normally seen on weekends with Julian at a shack in Morjim allegedly run by a Russian. * Name: Spee Nationality : Russian Presently residing in: Anjuna Job Profile: He is alleged to be hand in gloves with the three main protagonists-Tasha, Julian and Leon-and acts an intermediary between the interested parties.
