To Goanet:
As an overseas Goan, I have great sympathy for the
movement that is going on now to oppose land deals
that are aimed at industrialising Goa at the expense
of its scenic and cultural heritage. For the
politicians and industrialists, it's all about
economic deals. For Goans, it is a personal and deep
loss of the unique beauty and identity of Goa without
which, incidentally, it would have no tourist appeal.
It's hard to believe that the big economic interests
cannot see that this is a case of killing the goose
that laid the golden egg.
However, we Goans should also get behind the movement
for building a sustainable and green future for Goa.
Development by local people as is being done in
Chandor should and could be multiplied all over Goa.
Protests can only do so much. The future depends on
plans by Goans for the sustainable development of Goa.
