Congratulations to all the efforts of Godfrey over  these years that there is
some light at the end of this dark tunnel. Basically the bharatas should take
their war elsewhere.

Contrary to a report on the local English daily in Goa, the Church at Anjediv
Canacona Goa off Karwar Karnataka is not in ruins.  The repairs and restoration
have been carried out by the Ministry of Defence and is fit for use of the
Naval personnel  at Binaga Karwar. There are prospects of the Island being
thrown open for the faithful for the celebration of customary feasts of St
Francis de Assisi on 4th Oct and Our Lady of Springs on 2nd February.

[Goanet] Book: Age of Frenzy

2017-05-28 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
http://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/books/4-books-to-read-this-weekend-from-food-travel-to-history-4675325/

Book: Age of Frenzy
Author: Mahabaleshwar Sail
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 320
Price: Rs 399

It’s 1510. The Portuguese arrive armed with guns, swords and crucifixes to
the agricultural village of Adolshi, Goa, where Hindus have been living
peacefully.

A sense of foreboding fills them as tigers prowl, cow bones appear in
wells, chariot wheels break on festival day. The Portuguese king has
licensed Jesuits to take over and staunch white men move about preaching
the word of the Son of God. Land is seized, families broken. But Padre
Simao Peres is convinced that love and not force will bring about a change
of heart.

With the Inquisition looming like an axe over everyone’s heads, a saga of
choice plays out for the people of the village.

Recounting a history now mostly forgotten, this novel documents a turbulent
past of religious rifts, caste hierarchies and power shifts which changed
the ethos of a significant part of the western coastline of India forever.

[Goanet] Goa's famous musician - B Paul

2017-05-28 Thread Edward Verdes
Sharing a post by Fausto Visitacao Dacosta

Goa's famous musician - B Paul
I would be highly obliged if anyone knowing more about this great musician
could provide me with some inputs on his career, besides his date of birth,
death, his photo etc.
B Paul:
Basil Paul Fernandes who took his professional name as B Paul hailed from
Colvale, Bardez. He learnt music in the parochial school in his village,
Colvale. He was a very good alto saxaphone and clarinet player. He would
also play tenor sax and violin as well. He went to Mumbai for better
pastures and lived at Grant Road in Mumbai.
After performing for small Goan bands, at hotels and for tiatrs in Mumbai,
he got a big break in the famous band of Mumbai of that time Nelly & Her
Orchestra and played for this band for many years. The band leader Nelly
being a parsee this band would usually play for parsee functions and all
big corporate functions.
B Paul was short and dark and music lovers compared him to the famous
American musician and singer Louis Amstrong, whom he resembled were much.
And to B Paul too Amstrong was his role model, so much so that he would
sing two of his songs in his inimitable style ‘Hello Doly’ and ‘Who’s Sorry
Now?’ for every show.
B Paul has played music for many tiatrs in Mumbai, first as a alto sax
player in Rock de Salcette’s band and later as a band leader he has
provided music for many tiatrs of J P Souzalin, C. Alvares, Jacint Vaz,
etc. He has also arranged music for many songs of the tiatrists who have
recorded their songs on HMV records. B Paul has also played music for hindi
films. - Fausto Visitacao Dacosta

[Goanet] SHAME ON YOU VIJAI SARDESAI

2017-05-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
My friend and Goa’s renowned artist Dr Subodh Kerkar not long ago had aptly
described the shady character of Manohar Parrikar. But this week at the
closing function of his eco-art installation “Carpet of Joy” at Saligao,
Subodh Kerkar was surprisingly very comfortable playing host to the very
same Manohar Parrikar whom he had dubbed as a Chief Minister who lies the
most.

Was it the Vijai Sardesai effect, who happens to be Subodh Kerkar’s
brother-in-law. Incidentally the Marathi daily ‘Lokmat’ which is edited by
Vijai Sardesai’s other brother-in-law Raju Nayak which was bravely
highlighting the anti people policies of the BJP, in a devastating U turn
has now become the mouthpiece of Manohar Parrikar and the BJP. What a
Parivartan!

It may be recalled that while Vijai Sardesai was in the Opposition, Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar while addressing the Goa Legislative Assembly had
publicly accused Subodh Kerkar of cheating by filing false tenders with
fictitious names to get a contract of a sculpture to be installed on the
building of the Animal Husbandry at Patto in Panaji. Alleging that the
matter was very serious, Manohar Parrikar had also threatened to file an
FIR against Subodh Kerkar.

This week Subodh Kerkar was gracious enough to embrace Manohar Parrikar at
Saligao, but the least that was expected from the Chief Minister was a
sincere public apology for having made false and wild allegations against
Subodh Kerkar who is known across Goa and beyond as an artist par
excellence. But alike the dog’s tail, Manohar Parrikar will never
straighten up...neither will Vijai Sardesai, despite he having been
publicly branded by Manohar Parrikar as a ‘dalal’. Amen

Meanwhile, the Orange Brigade had a perfect sign-off today as they

[Goanet] Goa Mangomania (Scroll.in, 25/5/2017

2017-05-28 Thread Bernado Colaco

I have heard that the Rei Malcurado (badly cured) goes for Rs. 600 a dozen in
Goa. This is an interesting mango story by Xri VM. One wonders if the freedom
fighters could come with a new graft to equal the Malcurado.
BC

The lasting success and popularity of the Hapoos has many interesting
contemporary twists. In 2007, the US finally opened its doors to
exports from Maharashtra?s Ratnagiri district, in direct exchange for
India allowing in Harley Davidson motorbikes. Periodic rounds of mango
diplomacy have seen baskets of Maharashtra?s best sent across to
Pakistan to sweeten negotiations across the bargaining table.

But even as they are prized everywhere else, these undoubtedly decent
and adequately tasty fruits are not pursued with any enthusiasm in
Goa. That?s because of the far more exquisite varietals which grow
profusely in the state, which have never been hybridised for
Hapoos-like characteristics required for export (such as sturdiness,
and long shelf life). In a summer frenzy that lasts through the first
few rains, Goa?s mango-crazed populace greedily devours these
varietals. A couple of local varieties get pickled, while the
rosy-hued Monserrate (Musarat in Konkani) is generally reserved to
make the spectacularly dense and flavourful mango jam called mangada.
All these different varietals are unusally delicious, but the objects
of maximum desire and longing, the fruits that strike the deepest
chord in every Goan soul are the luscious Hilario, and the peerlessly
magnificent Mankurad.

[Goanet] VIJAI'S SILENCE IS DEAFENING

2017-05-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
*MANOHAR PARRIKAR’S NOW ENSLAVED AND CAGED PARROT IS YET TO RESPOND TO THE
BELOW LETTER *

AN OPEN LETTER TO VIJAI SARDESAI

13th March 2017

Dear Vijai,

I write this with a heavy heart, a very heavy heart indeed! But, I have no
choice … Having been your friend, in speaking out I may be hurting you,
your two MLAs Jayesh Salgaonkar, Vinod Palyekar and our common friend Rohan
Khaunte, but by maintaining silence I would be hurting thousands of Goans
across Goa and also failing in my duty to stand up for something that is
intrinsically wrong.

The people had thought you were the future of Goa. They were all for your:
Goem, Goenkar & Goenkarponn. They supported you thinking that you were a
beacon of hope to fight the Corruption, nepotism and the U turns of the BJP.

Goans were also very upset with the Congress for the way you were
ill-treated. I had myself publicly condemned the Congress and Luizinho
Faleiro for it. But now you have betrayed your Goem, you have shocked every
Goenkar, and you have forsaken your very own Goenkarponn.

In the lightning speed in which you embraced the BJP overnight, you have
committed the mother of all U turns. You have disgraced yourself, your
family, your Constituency and most importantly your Goa. The great Goan and
your uncle, the late Ravindra bab Kelekar and your late dear sister our
great poet Madhavi must be rolling in heavenly abode over the manner you
have so rashly and selfishly taken Goa and Goans for a ride.

You cannot and never will be trusted by any one again. Even by your new
found idol Manohar Gopalkrishna Parrikar, who as he always does, will treat
you as a purchasable commodity to be used and disposed off. I am infact
stunned that you dared trust Manohar Parrikar, someone who has publicly
spewed nasty venom against you and even tried his best to implicate you in
the Louis Berger case.

You now have two options. You, Jayesh Salgaonkar, Vinod Palyekar and Rohan
Khaunte should gracefully resign as MLAs and seek a fresh mandate by
contesting on a BJP ticket. As an alternative the four of you have the
choice of facing the public wrath and condemnation for the rest of your
lives.

You’ll have deeply hurt every Goan. But despite your betrayal, Goa will
overcome and survive to see Goem, Goenkar and Goenkarponn.

Let me leave you with those words of Billy Graham, “When wealth is lost,
nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is
lost, all is lost”.

Your very heartbroken once well-wisher,

[Goanet] Leo Varadkar leads the way for Ireland & India

2017-05-28 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
GL responds
Another son-of-the-soil scores big after leaving the home land.We wish him (and
all sons and daughters 'of-the-soil' immigrants) all the best for themselves
and their progeny.
These successful individuals could be great mentors for Goans in the native
land in and in the diaspora both in India and abroad.
My only plea is when they pay a visit to their ancestral home, they be given a
grand reception, unlike the private reception Antonio Coast received only from
his immediate family - not even his neighborhood and town.
Goanetters and others may want to review the accounts of the reception John F.
Kennedy received in Ireland - even though he  was fourth generation
Irish-American.

-From: V M  [Goanet] Leo Varadkar leads the way for
Ireland & India
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Leo-Varadkar-leads-the-way-for-Ireland-India/articleshow/58867960.cms

A political earthquake is shaking up Ireland, as 38-year-old Leo Varadkar piles
up unassailable support for his campaign to take over leadership of the ruling
Fine Gael party from the long-time prime minister (or Taoiseach) Enda Kenny.
Currently the Minister for Social Protection, he will be the youngest leader in
party history, and one of the youngest heads of state in the world. But there
are other unique factors at play in this story.
Varadkar's father is an immigrant from Mumbai, and he'll become the second
serving European leader of Indian origin, alongside Portugal's (Goan) Antonio
Costa. Also, just two years ago, on his 36th birthday,  the star campaigner
"came out" in public about his homosexuality. Now he will be just the fourth
openly gay world leader in history, after Belgium's Elio Di Rupo, Iceland's
Johanna Sigurdardottir and Luxembourg's Xavier Bettel.
