[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: On Dying and Living Forever (Goan Girl Shamika Andrade)

2013-11-02 Thread Goanet Reader
By Shamika Andrade
shamikaandr...@gmail.com

Death never comes at the right time, despite what mortals
believe. Death always comes like a thief. --Christopher Pike

I was four years old when I saw death up close for the first
time. My dad's youngest sister lay in the coffin. She died
due to a heart defect. She lived a long full life, they
said, in spite of her health condition.

I don't remember that day. All I remember is mum
sent me to the toy store with my big brother. It
was her attempt to shield her youngest from the
harsh realities of life... that the moment we are
born, we move towards our end. Like products on a
store shelf, we all have our expiry date.

I've been to many more funerals after my aunt's. And I fare
really badly. At least I used to. I would sob real loud,
even if I didn't know that person. And then the sobs would
grow louder as I'd imagine anyone and everyone close to me in
place of the actual dead person in the coffin. And then I'd
think of the family members and how they would manage with
such a loss. And then finally, I'd imagine myself in the
coffin and think, Oh God, you can't take me away. Not so
soon! For I have so much to learn, so much to see, so much
to do

At this point, people around me would think that I shared a
very close relationship with the deceased person.

But now older and hopefully wiser, I've come to
terms with death. Life will move on and it always
does. And even after all the years, the heart will
always reminisce. It's good, it should.

Today being All Soul's Day, I can’t help but think of my
loved ones. Aunty Aggy, Sr. Plassy, Fr Romu, Maimai, Papai
and Pontimai. No trip of mine to Goa is ever complete until
I visit their graves and niches with flower garlands. And
no, I'm not sad that they are no more. Who says they are no
more?

I believe people we love never depart. For they live through
us; through our thoughts, words and actions. I live my life
taking careful decisions knowing that I always want my
ancestors to be proud.

Having said that, I still have no answer about why
God takes away people in their prime. My Tamil
friend's in laws are really grieving at the loss of
their youngest son. Why us, why him? they asked
me, He was such a good boy, so loving. I had no
answer. But I made up my mind to ask God when it's
  my end.

And what about the people who are still with us on earth? I
realize that no one knows what tomorrow holds. No one even
knows how long we or our loved ones will live.

So what if we lived each day like it was our last?

If we did, it would ensure we seize every opportunity, push
ourselves over the limit (we define our limits), and always
remain too big to get stuck in pettiness. Unforgiveness,
unhappiness and anything negative would never exist.

As Christians, we believe in eternal life. Let's live a life
accordingly.

Let's celebrate life as much as we celebrate death.

And especially today pray for my departed loved ones as I
pray for yours.

Until my next,
Viva Goa!

Yours truly,
Goa Girl

Over fifty thousand revellers in outlandish costumes paraded down
a Manhattan avenue for several hours. Two million came to watch, many
thousands visiting from every continent in the world.
One word best defined the mood of the day -'happyness.' It was a sea
of humanity, folk at their very best: we probably feel the same way, at
 Ganapati
time. In New York, demons brought people together in a manner never
mastered by smiling heavenly cherubs: ironic, indeed.
It is a day for children, to witness the joy they experience is a treat,
 but Mervyn
and I will continue to gatecrash. The overcrowded pubs and bars in the city,
with screams and laughter into the wee hours showed that people can be human,
if they choose to do so.
Word is Merv and Rolly were at the same party. eric.

 Subject: [Goanet] Trick of treat?

 Folks,
Today is the day when people in Toronto don costumes and go out celebrating.
It usually is (to me) one of the most enjoyable days of the year.

The younger trick or treaters are dressed early and are the first to arrive
at your doorstep. It is an absolute delight to answer the doorbell and see an
adorable two year old girl dressed up as a fairy. Even more enjoyable is to
watch them skip up the driveway, fascinated that all the neighbours will give
them sweets and all they have to do is beam and say, Trick or treat?

It is easy to figure out who is five years or older. These kids now have a
say in what they are going to dress up as and last years dreamy four year old
fairy, suddenly becomes a five year old zombie. The older the kids get, the
more macabre their costumes become. My favourites are those with one eye
 falling from their skulls.

The more daring transform into murderers. There always is a wide spectrum of
axe, knife and sword wielding characters who are happy to demand candies and
flee, in glee, when their goal is achieved.

The more creative kids arrive with a bloody mess where their head should be.
Tucked into one arm, the way a rugby player tucks the ball, is their real
head. Such costumes are a sight to behold.

A lot of front yards are converted into mock graveyards. It can be cold, it
can be rainy, it can be both and windy too as it was today. This only adds to
the setting. Imagine this if you can, the fallen leaves are swirling and
wavering in the wind. There is a bunch of excited, pre-teen, murderers
walking down the street. A slow mist is creeping up around the lamp posts and
there is nothing but excitement in the air.

Their talk, believe it or not, is about candies. And sometimes about whose
house to go to next. What the kids do not notice is the elaborate set ups
that some parents have taken the trouble to construct. Those celebrating will
have stuff anyone can buy from Wal-Mart. But there also is that one simple
special pleasure. The pumpkin. Actually, the carved pumpkin.

Carved pumpkins, ranging from the truly admirable to the almost disgusting.
It is all part of the fun. It is also all part of the fun Toronto I live in.

Mervyn (at the end of a great day.)

We protested on the roads because the police refused to take
down the details of the killers which we were trying to give them. There
was a communication gap initially and the lower category police officers
did not listen to us. All we asked them was we wanted to check the body of
our murdered brother as we feared the killers could have planted drugs on
his corpse to make him look like a drug peddler. We wanted a proper
panchnama to be done before the body could be sent for post mortem. It is
a
known fact that police in India plant drugs and contraband on the bodies
of
victims and even those arrested for their own ulterior motives. Many of
our

brethren are victims of false cases planted on them by the ANC and NCB. We
wanted two of our people to accompany the body and be present during the
post mortem to ensure that there was no hanky panky. But the police
refused
promoting some hot-bloodied Nigerians to take the law in their own hands.
“

**Simeon claimed that two BJP MLAs were involved in the murder and were
protecting the actual killers, some of them connected with the drug

[Goanet] TIME FOR MANOHAR PARRIKAR TO HANG HIS BOOTS

2013-11-02 Thread Aires Rodrigues
After that fracas at Porvorim where a handful of Nigerians were calling the
shots, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar may now decide to divert all
future state sponsored foreign tours of his ministers, MLAs and chums to
Nigeria for some soul searching and for the much needed training in martial
arts.

We all know that the Casino, drug and prostitution trade is all inter
linked. Manohar Parrikar with his new found love for Casinos is just
accelerating Goa’s decay. He has been in power for over 19 months and can
no longer fool the people by blaming the earlier government for all the day
to day ills that Goa is currently sadly witnessing.

The very articulate Fr Eremito Rebello had recently opined “the sooner
Parrikar goes the better for Goa”. Maybe its high time for Manohar Parrikar
who has miserably failed on all counts to heed this Fr Eremito Rebello’s
well given advice and pack his bag for the better of Goa.

[Goanet] LIBERATE GOA POLICE FROM POLITICAL CLUTCHES

2013-11-02 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Supreme Court of India recently very rightly observed that governance
would not have faced a chaotic situation had the bureaucracy not allowed
itself - the steel frame of the state - to be rusted.

In Goa this steel frame has rusted beyond recognition. We lack a neutral
bureaucracy. What we are seeing is an utterly rusted frame, which has been
torn to pieces, broken, mangled, crushed and its very backbone languishing
in impotence.

As the head of the bureaucracy the onus was on the Chief Secretary to lead
by example. Sadly the current incumbent Mr. B. Vijayan has been bending and
crawling to all the whimsical diktats of the politicians in power. Mr.
Vijayan who is due to retire soon has obviously abdicated all his
responsibility and has chosen to be in the right books of those in power
possibly hoping that he will get a post retirement posting to make Goa his
resting nest.

From the Chief Secretary to the peon, the entire bureaucracy is duty bound
to uphold the law and should not allow themselves to be reduced to mere
pimps of those in power. Unfortunately almost all officers are today
politically aligned and are shamelessly dancing to the tunes of those in
power.

It would be wrong to blame only the police for all that went wrong at
Porvorim after that Nigerian led ruckus. It is time to allow the Goa Police
force to function as a professionally-competent body and not as mere agents
of the political party in power. There has to be a consensus to ensure that
the police get their independence and are allowed to deliver in accordance
with law. It is a shame that over the years police officers have been
manipulated and emasculated by politicians in power and in fact police
officers have had no role to play except acting as henchmen of the
Ministers and MLAs who are virtually running and manipulating the working
of the police stations. The frequent transfer and victimization of police
officers at the instance of politicians has to stop. It affects the morale
and credibility of the entire police force.

Goa has seen very good police officers but they are not allowed to perform.
Earlier this year we have been witness to how the then North Goa
Superintendent of Police Vijay Singh was unceremoniously shunted out for
bravely and courageously enforcing the law. Currently Priyanka Kashyap is
the North Goa SP. She has been in Goa for just three months but has been
doing her best in handling the escalating crime that Goa finds itself
engulfed in. The day she took over she had to combat that day light rampage
at the LPK club at Nerul. Priyanka’s husband Karthik is heading the Anti
Narcotics cell and has ensured a record number of drug seizures since he
took over.

Politicians are uncomfortable with upright officers like Vijay, Priyanka
and Karthik but it is for the people at large to stand by good officers to
ensure that Goa becomes a better and safe place to live in.

And no this isn't satire. Its a post press conference report.

*Goa lawmakers slug it out; call each other hijras, bhadwas
*Panaji: The political heat generated by the bizarre public clash between a
Nigerian gang on the one hand, and police and locals on Thursday appears to
have had Goa’s lawmakers frothing at the mouth.

After an independent Opposition legislator Vijai Sardesai Thursday called
the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led coalition, a government of
hijras (eunuchs) the BJP Friday responded by calling him a bhadwa (pimp) at
a press conference at the party’s state headquarters.

Seated on the dais in the conference room, surrounded by large images of
BJP’s prime ministerial hopeful Narendra Modi, party president Rajnath
Singh and aging party stalwart Atal Behari Vajpayee, power minister Mahadev
Naik took the political discourse in the state to a new level by saying
that Sardesai was indulging in “bhadwagiri”.

“He has been indulging in bhadwagiri all the time. That is how Sardesai has
made his money. If he calls us a government of hijras on a TV debate, our
response is that Sardesai is a hijra. He has spent a lot of time with
hijras,” Naik told the press conference.

BJP legislator from Sanguem Subhash Phaldesai even went on to give the
media an eloquent definition of the word bhadwagiri. “Bhadwagiri means
doing unethical dealings for money using political influence,” explained
Phaldesai.

Sardesai had in a TV debate Thursday night, attacked the police and the
government for not being able to react in time, after a gang of Nigerians
blocked National Highway -17 and held traffic to ransom for hours, after
one of their compatriots was murdered.
We legislators are not hijras. But this is a government of hijras,
Sardesai had said.

[Goanet] Engr. Silvester de Souza, Aldona/Margao/Dona Paula

2013-11-02 Thread Valmiki Faleiro
To those who knew him, the sudden and unfortunate passing away of
civil engr. Cyrilo Silvestre Nascimento de Souza (Silvester de Souza,

11 Jan 1941 - 31 Oct 2013) came with shock and much sadness.

Born to late Luis and Cacilda de Souza of Aldona, Engr. Silvester
partnered Engr. Keni and the two of them partnered with architects
Costa Almeida in Margao in the 1960s. Among their early projects
was the 'Pelican' building opposite Lohia Maidan. What earned them
early recognition was the design and construction of the church edifice
attached to the Carmelite monastery at Malbhat, Margao. This featured
in a leading world magazine on architecture, published in the UK.

Engr. Silvester came off, clearly, as a decent and non-interfering person
who kept to his own work, a competent professional and, basically, as a
good man -- of unwavering values, unbending principles and unassailable
integrity.

He was married to Lilia Maria Colaco, better known as Bunota, my senior
and respected former neighbour from Margao. (A trained teacher, Bunota
later worked as librarian at Panjim's Institute Menezes Braganza and then
at Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Porvorim, before taking over as a

much-needed archivist at the Bishop's Palace, Panjim.) Engr. Silvester also
leaves behind three daughters ... Melanie, married to Vincent Lisboa,
Marissa, married to the famed medico and former *Goa Bachao Abhiyan*
convenor Dr. Oscar Rebelo, and Valerie, married to Hemant Jaiswal.

Funeral at Taleigao church, Sunday 03 Nov 2013, 3.45pm.

Resign; implement food act: Valanka

TNN | Nov 2, 2013, 02.41 AM IST

PANAJI: State chief of the Indian Youth CongressValanka Alemao has
demanded the resignation of chief minister Manohar Parrikar as home
minister for his failure to control the law and order situation on
Thursday.

Addressing reporters, she expressed surprise that only 19 Nigerians
are registered with authorities while hundreds actually live in Goa.

This is not about Nigerians or Kenyans. There are other communities
living in Goa. We cannot wait for a situation like this to happen to
act. As home minister, Parrikar is responsible and accountable for the
collapse of law and order and he should resign immediately.

She also attacked the state government for not implementing the Food
Security Act. Why is the Goa government stopping people from getting
foodgrains? It is a central scheme and the state government should not
think on party lines. Please implement the Act in Goa, she said.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: On Dying and Living Forever (Goan Girl Shamika Andrade)

Until my next,
Viva Goa!

Yours truly,
Goa Girl

NAMO V/S SHAZADA

Namo is a very senior, experienced and matured politician’, having ruled
Gujarat over the years. He must remember that his early childhood is not
so rosy and was laced with difficulties. It is this test of fire that has
made him what he is today in the political arena On the contrary Rahul
Ghandi was born with the silver spoon in his mouth, besides he was born in
the first family of India with likely political inheritance,as been proved
so far. Perhaps Shazada is pushed into politics, much against his natural
inclination, with the mother wanting to anoint him in good time, to carry
on the family traditions

It is uncharitable for a man of Modi`s stature to chide him mockingly as
SHAZADA, is in poor taste. It would be much more honourable, graceful for
NAMO to advance his plan of development and to eradicate corruption. He
is no threat to Namo in the political field and cannot do any damage by
words, action at political rallies. The Congress is bereft of credible
leaders. who have pan India Image and hence taking shelter under the label
of Ghandi family and that is understandable even to the blind. Ghandi has
resisted all attempts to take on administrative responsibilities at the age
of 40 and hence his desire for position is not the issue. On the other hand
he is working for the strengthening of party organ and promoting, infusing
young blood to replace the decadence in the ranks

Namo has been refuting word by word sentence by sentence and verse by verse
to demonstrate his superiority. It is utterly unwarranted to go hammer and
tongs on every utterance of Rahul .Precious time is devoted to counteract
his messages by name and nickname. It is mean and politically immature, as
Mr Rahul does never address or mock at him personally, thereby maintaining
dignity, decorum in public speeches. There have been guffaes, bloomers at
times and that is understandable not condemnable as fau paux

Namo is creating a wave of sympathy throughout the Nation by his
uncharitable tirade for the young Turk. Namo is ill advised that by
deriding him as SHAZADA, which he is really by birth, stand to lose in the
eyes of voters as being unfair , undignified in direct personal attacks

Rahul Ghandi has been emphasizing on secular credentials and Namo on good
governance, development, routing out corruption and does not counteract on
the secular platform, Naturally the Gujarat riots, fake encounters,
autocratic rule, resistance to his leadership in his own party are brakes
to his aims and goals

[Goanet] GOA WAS ONCE THE PARADISE OF THE EAST

2013-11-02 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The tourist season has started but Goa’s basic infrastructure lies in
shambles. The roads in the coastal belt of Anjuna, Vagator, Arpora,
Calangute and Baga are in an utter muddle. With so many craters all over,
driving a two wheeler even during the day is a very bumpy task. What a
shabby welcome to those visiting Goa. Couldn’t the government have at least
patched all those potholes to prevent accidents thus saving lives of the
tourists and locals as well?

This government like the earlier government has been squandering crores of
rupees on organizing road shows across the world to promote Goa as a
tourist destination. Instead, if the government had cared to improve the
crumbling infrastructure, Goa would have sold by itself. In this current
sordid state of affairs with garbage strewn all over, the high end decent
tourist will not care to step in.

Despite the State coffers being empty, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has
had the audacity to approve a needless 8 day trip beginning on November 7th for
a 37 member jumbo delegation to visit Germany, Austria and Italy ostensibly
to get lessons on garbage disposal. It will be a State sponsored junket for
these Ministers, MLAs, and their other local political chums who will make
merry while the State reels in acute financial turmoil. What a criminal
waste of public funds.

Haphazard planning, improper sanitation and the uncontrollable stray animal
menace all over is projecting Goa in bad light. Besides, Goa has become a
very safe haven for the narcotic trade and the flourishing menace of
prostitution. The alarming number of daylight rapes, murders and burglaries
has further made our once serene Goa a very unsafe destination.

2013-11-02 Thread U. G. Barad

Without commenting much on the message written by Nelson Lopes - Chinchinim,
I wish to refer to historical facts, 'In India, exchanges of all sorts
including that of high decibel levels always wait for elections to come -
there is nothing new about it!'

In scientific terms, I would say, 'These days Newton's theory prevails
between Gandi and Modi - for every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction from both sides.'

More simply, the exchanges that are going on these days between kangress and
BJP are nothing but 'Heart v/s Mind Games.' One has to wait to see how much
Heart bleeds and for what? And of course one has to equally wait to see how
Mind plays 'Bleeding Heart Games' - both players are aspirant of wining
upcoming 5 state elections!

[Goanet] Tribute to a Goan jazz legend

2013-11-02 Thread Jazz Goa
Jazz Goa paid tribute to Goan jazz legend Micky Correa with a concert at the
Clube Vasco da Gama in Panjim on the 1st of November. Micky passed away in 2011
at the age of 98 making this his centenary year. His son in law Caetano Colaco
welcomed guests with anecdotes about the legend and then it was showtime. Some
of Goa's most accomplished jazz artistes took the stage to salute a great band
leader, a legend and most of all a good human being that was Micky Correa. The
stage came alive with singer Susan Rocha, clarinet player Christopher Pereira,
pianists, Jason Quadros and George Fernandez, drummers Dennis Coelho, Carlos
Gonsalves, Alan Moraes and Lester Godinho, Emilliano Da Cruz's band, Vince
Costa's band, Japanese jazz guitar virtuoso Hideaki Tokunaga, Darjeeling guitar
great Benoy Rai and Jazz Goa's director bass player Colin D'Cruz who also
curated the show. Every artiste who took the stage performed from the heart
resulting in some truly amazing
renditions of jazz standards and originals. The audience stayed riveted to
their seats right through the three hour show. An Argentinian couple in the
audience, inspired by Emilliano's performance, spontaneously took to the floor
in a dazzling display of the tango. All in all a fitting tribute to a great
Goan jazz legend. Watch some of the concert videoclips at

[Goanet] Goans in Toronto

2013-11-02 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,
One of the perks of living in Toronto is that this is one of the most
diversified cities of the world. Food, drinks and the culture of almost every
nation is available here. To give you some idea of the diversity, the
Archdiocese claims that mass is celebrated in 33 languages every Sunday.

On special days, there are all sorts of gathering to remember the past. One of
these gatherings, earlier today, was the mass to remember deceased Tanzanians
and ex-Tanzanians. This gathering is one of the more emotive ones I attend.
Those who have lost loved ones during the year get the chance to pray and
reflect as a community. Others get the chance to condole with their friends.

Most of you have seen video's of my favourite singers, the choir that performs
every year at this mass. Without further ado, here they are singing a Kiswahili
hymn. They also sang in Konkani and English and I am looking forward to seeing
the video's from others posted here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri-Hm8Fvjok

After mass, everyone heads to the church basement. Most people have brought in
snacks. Goan chutney sandwiches, Gujarati dhokla, mandazi's and even good ol'
Canadian donuts are heaped upon the tables. Coffee, tea and soft drinks are
served and the ages of people in attendance range from a few weeks old to those
well into their nineties.

This meet is also one of those few times when you can talk to each other
without having to shout or raise your voice above that of the band/music. That
is, you get the chance to have real conversations instead of the basic, How
are you? How's mummy and daddy?

Goan migrants from other countries have started to emulate the Tanzanian events
now, organising an annual dance, picnic, mass, etc. While we have been
privileged to have the memorial mass for some time, I see the newer attendees
finding it as gratifying as the seasoned ones. One gets to catch up with old
friends or rather friends from ones youth. One also gets to talk to their kids
and with increasing frequency now, their grand kids. For the exceptionally
lucky, sometimes a stranger will come up to you and say, Your
grand-father/mother was my friend.

I treasure the diversity and continuity available in Toronto.

. . . there is some evidence that bedevilled Bangladesh is still a better
place to live than India, the big brother next door that has been heralded as a
21st-century superpower.

According to a new study called the Legatum Prosperity Index, Bangladesh fares
better than India when it comes to the joy of everyday life, and the
prospect of being able to build an even better life in the future.

. . .

. . .categories, such as education and governance, Bangladesh is ahead.
(Bangladesh also fared better than Cambodia and Pakistan in the study.)

Interesting - perhaps India should invite some experts from Bangladesh to
assist them in Education and better governance.

[Goanet] A Tribute to Journos on the Front Line

2013-11-02 Thread roland.francis
With the abduction and death of two French journalists in Mali, the number of
media workers killed all over the world in 2013 totals 42.

It takes a special kind of courage and professionalism to venture into hot
spots with bullets flying and mayhem around you, or to interview scary leaders
who with a single nod can have you tortured and killed, so that we in our
drawing rooms safe and sound, can get an inside pulse of those hotspots.

I bow my head in reverence to their deeds.

[Goanet] The Bright Side of the Porvorim Incident

2013-11-02 Thread roland.francis
Setting aside the matters of:
Effects of the drug menace;
Incompetence of the police;
Cowering of brass before politicos;
The CM at a complete loss;
No faith in law and order for Aam Admi;

One bright ray of light has shone through:
No loss of life of the innocent or otherwise occured after the initial murder.

It could have been worse. If the Nigerians had brought arms or dangerous
weapons into the melee, or if an armed police battalion had to resort to
firing, there could have been innocents dead.

You are right, Alfred, Porvorim was not a Manhattan Mascarade !
