[Goanet-News] Goan institutions in Kenya

2016-10-13 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
Just curious to know -- are there any Goan institutions still
active/existing in Kenya? The only two one can find links to online are:

The Nairobi Institute, Kenya (on Juja Road)
P.O.Box 40197
Nairobi, Kenya

The Goan Gymkhana
P.O.Box 41910
Nairobi, Kenya.

Google has some link to the former [http://bit.ly/NairobiInst] but there
are no details or photos linking there.

The Kenya Buzz has some link to the Railway Goan Institute at Parklands [
https://www.kenyabuzz.com/biz-directory/goan-institute] but it's not clear
if that is a past description or present.

Are there any other Goan institutions or links in that part of the world? FN

PS: Please post your pointers to goa...@goanet.org -- twenty+ years of

[Goanet] 'Yesterday in Paradise'

2016-10-13 Thread Mervyn Maciel
Am appending a brief note on my thoughts on this
excellent book.

Mervyn Maciel

My thoughts on Cyprian Fernandes’s “Yesterday in Paradise”

As one who was born and lived the life in Kenya, I would class

Cyprian Fernandes’s memoir, “Yesterday in Paradise” as a

“just-can’t-put-it –down” book.

Who, I wonder, after a seemingly disturbed childhood would

rise to the dizzy heights in the journalistic world as our author has?

But Cyprian had a loving and caring mother who, despite odds stacked

heavily against her, literally worked her socks off and sacrificed all
solely to

ensure her children were safe and well looked after. No sacrifice was too

much for her and it is heartening to see the author pay a much deserved

tribute to this incredible woman.

That Cyprian lived by his wits can be seen from many instances in the
narrative.

For example, during his schooling in Eastleigh, he refuses to ‘bow down’ to
authority

 – in this case, the school’s Principal, Fr. Hannon- who wrongly accuses him
of lying.

Kudos to Cyprian for standing his ground and being freed by the truth.

A bank clerk’s or office job was not for this ‘never-give-up’ individual

who was made of sterner stuff! As you plough through the pages of

‘Yesterday in Paradise’ you will see that Cyprian’s destiny lay elsewhere.

His later foray into the coveted world of journalism, and his meteoric
rise

within the organisation saw him being assigned some of the most enviable and

dangerous tasks – a mission he always accomplished with singular
distinction.

Here was a man not given to suffering fools gladly as shown during his
encounter

with quite an inexperienced and arrogant Minister of Information who took
umbrage

to an editorial piece Cyprian had written. Undeterred by the Minister’s
threats

of deportation, the brave author stuck to his story, refusing to apologise
for what

was in fact, the plain truth.

Through his friendship with some of the senior Ministers in the Kenyatta

Government, Cyprian may well have been privy to some of the inner workings
of the government.

In this book, he has had the guts to ‘spill the beans’ so to speak, and
come out

strongly about the rampant corruption in the corridors of power of the
Kenyatta

Government. Many, including Kenyatta himself, come in for severe criticism
for

reneging on their previous promises to the “*wanainchi” (*the landless
masses),

and instead, allocating large acreages of formerly ‘White Highlands’
farmland

 to themselves and their families.

The author does not forget the ‘African Goan’ –to whom he devotes

a whole chapter, paying glowing tribute to the humble civil servants

who kept the government machinery functioning.

There is so much in this very readable book that the author touches on

 – from early Goan migration to even the ‘ugly ‘and distasteful caste system

which hopefully is being consigned to history.

It is a book which should be required reading for every Goan –

So why are you waiting ? Go on and buy a copy NOW!

On the button only the above two exist. There no Goans left serving in the

Indian Railway Institute next door on Juja Road next to the Railway

Most of the Goans emigrated after Independence and they coninue to leave

[Goanet] Song Info : Mai Ge Dhobitalao

2016-10-13 Thread Andrew Ferrao
Hi Frederick ,

Thank you for sharing the link on your group page , thought i mights well
mail you the info about the song , so here it is .

About The Singer / Music Composer : Andrew Ferrao
After carving a niche for himself as a successful performer, composer and
producer in his 23 year-old music career, starting his own collaborative
outfit was the natural thing to do for Andrew Ferrao.
One of the most distinguished keyboard players in the circuit, Andrew is
known for his unique playing style. His wide array of musical involvement
spans from performing with Rabbi Shergill, Neeraj Shridhar (Bombay Vikings)
Pritam , Natalie Di Luccio (Canada) Leslie Lewis , Vasuda Sharma , Hamsika
Iyer , Shruti Pathak and many more .collaborating with the Youtubers based
in Mumbai. composing music for jingles and music albums and documentaries.

About The song : "Mai Ge Dhobitalao” is the debut single with a message
about Goa's current state of affairs. the initiative to speak out!
Its about Goa which is a piece of land like any other part of the world ,
what draws everyone here is cultural ethos of the Goan people , Harmony if
communities is strong yet youth are getting wayward and tend to get
instigated at the drop of the hat , Result of parents over indulgence , the
chorus of the song ends with “ Mar teka , fodd teka etc is the voice of the
youth .
In the song we are not lusting for blood rather we are pointing to egatbis
going on like maramari , crime , fights vagabonds etc the influx of
migration outcome of overseas goans , land being sold by locals for a less
price or keep it in the family , high number of bidders from the outside
state .
In the end we appeal to Goans not only to save Goa but to protect the
culture of an indigenous people . its the same story no matter how many
govts change because we must remember Government is about us, for us and by
us .

A philosophical analysis: if retention is stagnation..migration is
excommunication. Elections are an individual citizens constitutional right
or a tool to make us cower down in fright? Everyone searches for greener
pastures. Then there Is no green after wiping it clean. The chorus looks
like its the frustration of the adolescent we as adults are trying to
reprimand. So they sink the canoes n bury the nets as casinos now provide
them livelihood on mandovi river..blocking out the real sunset sunrise of a
citizens freewill. It all started with snakes n ladder n roll the dice
games n cards by hippies flower children who were bankrupt. Fighting over
languages will not solve real problems like progress of mind ethics
etiquette civility intellectual pursuit and art. Rather ..the coconut tree
will shrink n grass will attain great heights.. Figure of
speech..metaphor... Allegory.. Who are we fooling?.. Every paisa lost is
every bloodrop wasted. Sinking in marshes while rich roam in Porsche's..
Kids on a field spree.. Everything getting free.. If parent getting angry
they going hanging on tree... Portugal tit for tat..bouncing ball on
invasion bat. Exhibitionism buried now with modesty pants. Mouth Is
watering for curcurith friedbread…
"Mai Ge Dhobitalao”

[Goanet] CORTALIM SEAT WILL IT GO TO AAP OR ALINA?

2016-10-13 Thread Stephen Dias
Dear FRIENDS

My assessment of Cortalim seat where Olencio is standing against his own
relative Alina Saldanha will not give her any pressure and win the election
because he is immature and young compared to Alina .
I am pessimist that this could be a trick played by Alina to win the
election 2017.
Goa Forward and even Congress will certainly go above Alina. ( read The
Goan today what Alina says)
I feel that AAP must review this studies and see that another person
superior and more matured is placed against Alina. Or not to contest at
all, so that Alina is lost and give chances to others like Goa Forward or
Congress.
I may be wrong but this medicine of mine may be useful for AAP to think and
search for a better candidate.
My aim is some or other that BJP must go away. Any other party will do. But
definitely AAP must come.
Alina goes against the ideology of her husband although he had to stay in
BJP because of bad politics in Congress, and jumped to BJP for some
benefits to his ramponkars. Alina cannot be compared with her husband
ideology. She has been failing miserably.
