Anthony Piedade Viegas. ..A walking Encyclopedia on football He is popularly and affectionately known as COPID to friends in the neighborhood and beyond geographical boundaries of ChinchinimVillage.Born to Joaquim Sylvester Viegas and Artemisia Rodrigues at Chinchinim on 24 February 1939 is . among three sons and two daughters of whom only two brothers survive today.. He conducted village football tournaments of youth and was hence respectively called Captain, which in Konkanni literally translates to Copid.. The title and the salutation became synonymous with his name and having accepted sportingly, he is not offended with it. He studied at St Bosco`s High School Chinchinim and represented school football team as dependable left outer, The school claimed two Championships in finals. Unfortunately his love for the game was terminated in 1956 due to fracture of leg at Goa Velha . In spite of it he represented Hind Cycles at Bombay as their goal keeper for a year with distinction. He was passionate about swimming too and equally at home in Volleyball and Badminton. He is nostalgic about participating at inaugural match of CRCC.. He served CRCC as the Vice President and was in Charge for conducting Third Division games for GFA at Chinchinim. He remains ardent supporter of CRCC and has rendered devoted services over the years in all its activities and tournaments. Like most Village lads of his times, he embarked on successful sea career. His professional duties involveled as a waiter and was promoted as chief steward. His friendly nature has earned him lasting company of friends,.He refrains from criticism of others but is all praise for friends achievements and vocal about it, He is always a pleasant company to be with and share thoughts and time.. He s deeply religious , faithful person , loved reading and singing in the Church .He is most sought after for litanies for his melodious voice and leadership. He is indispensable to initiate prayers on various functions and also for raising toasts on many a occasion. He is particularly gifted with special memory for past songs, which he can sing with ease. His functional knowledge of Portuguese, French, Spanish etc is simply amazing without any formal studies in languages The most remarkable quality is his knowledge of football at the tip of his fingers. He is known as walking encyclopedia on football .His vast store of information on many aspects of football, National, International, local, grounds ,players teams, clubs, rules and regulations, opinions on decisions, comments on performance, views on controversial referring are unbiased and astonishing. He is often referred to unofficially by friends and functionaries of football associations..clubs for his views that are held in high esteem. He laments the loss of all his collection of precious records to white ants. I gladly recall compiling/documenting a First and only documented list thus far of forgotten,,past footballers of Chinchinim with his guidance and which is open for up gradation and improvement His services are indispensable at any soccer tournament held in the Village. He is tasked with selection of various categories of players for recognition and awards during the tournament. It is an arduous task that calls for concentration, documentation and selecting the right players. His decisions are non controversial. deserving merit and never have been objected to this day. He has forecast ed accurately the selections even in International tournaments There is no substitute for this job at he moment and in spite of rejecting the offers, he is virtually forced into accepting though reluctantly because of strain of his advancing age At the finals of inter Village Tournament, Our Lady of Merces Sports Club of Sirlim on 15-8-2018, the 21 st edition he was selectively honoured by the organizers by conferring a gold medal.. This symbolic gesture by the Club for the first time is in recognition and in appreciation of his valuable,, painstaking efforts during the tournament As I know him personally. he is humble and unassuming to be enamored by such awards that are beyond his expectations and call of duty .He shuns publicity but his passion need to be recorded , as a worthy member of football fraternity of Chinchinim Village .Nevertheless everyone feels genuinely happy that it is well deserved , well thought of honour ,meaningful and appropriate. gesture. Quote For a train driver in India, the tragedy in Amritsar is one of their worst nightmares. While the Ministry of Railways has ruled out taking any action against Arvind Kumar, who was driving the Amritsar train that mowed down at least 60 and injured almost 80, the incident is sure to leave scars. The Quint met multiple train drivers and each one of them said someone had come under their train and died while they controlled the throttle. Sudden Deaths and Mind Games: Three to four times it has happened with me that people jump in front of the train to commit suicide. They do this when the train is only 10-20 metres away making it impossible and redundant for us to press brakes," Paramveer Singh, 36, said without betraying emotion. He has been a train driver for over a decade and had just woken from a 7-hour sleep for dinner. His train was scheduled for next morning.Singh said drivers apply brakes when they can. "I know someone who pulled the brakes to save the life of a stray dog recently. We do our bit," he said earnestly. The team in a train involves a driver, an assistant driver and a guard. The guard is responsible for the train. When someone comes under the wheels they have to, in writing, submit at the next station where the accident happened, what speed the train was at and any other supporting details. The guard goes and checks the body, if the person has any chance of survival they are rushed to the nearest hospital. The body can't be left unattended and unclaimed on the tracks. "An inquiry is initiated if the the accident happened at the signal or gate," he added. Lots of drivers said people on rail tracks instigate drivers for fun. Sanjay Kumar, a 27-year-old assistant driver, said, "We keep honking but they do not move pretending like they cannot hear the horn. Then they'll move and come back on the track again briefly. All this is very unsettling. Many times. during these mind games people fail to judge the speed of the train, often costing them their lives. Subsequent Guilt and Anger: Singh said the first person to die on his watch was an old woman. She was walking along the tracks. Singh couldn't anticipate from her body language what she was about to do next. When the train was 15-20 metres away, she laid down on the tracks. "What can you do? What can I do?" Singh asked. Both Singh and Sanjay said they felt acutely terrible the first time someone came in front of their train and died. Now however, they understand it is an occupational hazard they have very little control over. While some reflect like Singh, many other drivers just get angry with the games the locals play with them. "It is a train and the tracks are not a place to hang out. That should be amply clear to everyone," a 38-year-old train driver said. His train was due to leave Jalandhar city railway station in another three hours. "Mazze lene ke liye aayenge, pathar maarke chale jayenge (They come to have fun, hurl stones at us and go away). They treat us like we are a joke. There is no respect or sympathy for a railway driver. If nothing happens we are insignificant and if something happens we are to blame," he said. Fear of Petty Thieves: Three drivers told us how they have gotten mugged by people, while others nodded. When the train is moving at a slow pace in areas where slums are built adjacent to railway tracks, drivers are wary, they explained. "Petty thieves and local people get on the train and pull the chain," they told The Quint. Once someone pulls the chain the train stops and pressure is built from both ends to restart it. The re-starting takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. The assistant driver or guard has to go to the compartment where the chain was pulled and reset the valve, which opens when the chain is pulled. "When we go down we are often mugged. They take our phones and watches. Or when we come back to the stand we find that our belongings, including our bag, are taken. I was also beaten up once, they do this for jest without any reason," the 38-year-old driver said. Cases against those guilty of pulling the chain without good case are booked under Section 141 of the Railways Act. A fine of Rs 1,000 or/and imprisonment up to a month can be imposed. "That rarely happens, Rs 500 is generally taken as fine. That is if they are caught, but our belongings are gone," he said. My sincere gratitude to the officials at the WhatsApp headquarters in California for having late last night acted swiftly to restore my WhatsApp account which was blocked and banned on Tuesday evening at the instance of a Senior Goa Politician. Having lost the company of WhatsApp for 24 long hours was so daunting. I have explained to WhatsApp that I have at no time violated any of their Terms of service. If anyone that may have creeped into my contact list is unable to digest what I write, would humbly request him to unfriend me or in the alternate block me as a result of which he would not be burdened with any of my further messages. The BJP at Goa in 2012 and Narendra Modi in 2014 at the Centre rode to power optimizing the use of social media to the maximum. That very same BJP is now trying to ensure curbs on the social media to suppress and muzzle the freedom of speech. The power to dissent and constructive criticism of any government is vital to the very functioning of democracy. In recent years social media has transformed and has drastically enhanced our power to communicate instantly across the world. Through Whatsapp, Twitter, the various groups on Facebook besides other global networking sites that I am enrolled with, I am able to communicate by sharing a message or a thought with over 20 lakh people.
