[Goanet] DON’T SQUANDER PUBLIC FUNDS ON STATUES AND MEMORIALS

2019-12-08 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The British statesman and political thinker Edmund Burke had said “The
greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse”

It is absolutely despicable that a very cash strapped and heavy debt-ridden
Goa Government has had the cheek to make a budget provision of a whopping
ten crores to build a Manohar Parrikar memorial on the Miramar beach, the
foundation of which is proposed to be laid on this 13th December. Such rank
abuse of Power needs to be strongly opposed tooth and nail.

Miramar Beach is a public recreational area for the people to enjoy freely
and without hindrance. It should not be transformed into a Memorial Beach
of concrete structures. It is fair enough that there is one Samadhi of the
charismatic Dayanand Bandodkar, our first Chief Minister who with a vision
laid the strong foundations of Goa. Let us keep what now remains of Miramar
Beach to be freely used by not pouring more concrete on it.

The Miramar beach comes under the purview of the Tourism Department and any
use of the beach must be properly and legally authorized. Environmentally,
as it is classified as a no development zone, one must therefore question
whether any construction and development is legal. The Government must also
refrain from creating a wrong precedent by creating a memorial for Manohar
Parrikar having ignored Goa’s other departed Chief Ministers. More
importantly there is another serious question to consider as to what would
happen if in future a CM has to be buried rather than cremated? It is
inconceivable that a burial on the public beach would be allowed and yet
another concrete memorial constructed.

As the Government has not erected any memorials for other Chief Ministers,
it should not do so now for Manohar Parrikar who departed leaving the State
exchequer burdened with a multi crore bill over his medicals. Needless to
say, he left the State in an utter mess with every possible public issue
lying unresolved. From Mining to Madhei and from Casinos to Corruption
Manohar Parrikar procrastinated on it all for the fear of losing his Chair.
Let us firmly resolve not to squander the very scarce public funds on
Memorials and Statues. God Save Our Goa.

Dear Dr Adolfo, Did you view the full film? It does not give "yet another
perspective". It seriously challenges much of what we've grown to believe,
over the years, decades and even centuries. Please view it... FN

[Goanet] The Inquisition & SFX And The Trade In KILWA

2019-12-08 Thread Adolfo Mascarenhas
Part II
Last Friday in tasic Message was

*Did SFX torture and force Hindus, Early Christians and Moslem to became
Catholics? Was he the *Grand Inquisitor. NO! NO ! Perhaps the Dominicans

SFX preached the Gospel, cared for the sick. He was a linguist. He
suffered a lot during his travels. During one trip when the boat sunk and
he lost his cross, the crab dropped the cross near him. (Talk of Goans &
Crab Mentality) He spent only 10 months in India but he was more
impressed by the Far East. Malaysia, Japan and China.

The reality in today's world from Trump to Modi, Brazil to Philippines is
that there is the mixing of Politics and Religion it causes Greed
and substitutes Gods I

PART II

A Focus On Kilwa

Kilwa is a name of a district in present day Tanzania, It is also the name
of a port and a settlement. In 1489 / 90 A Portuguese scout named Pero da
Covilha disguised as an Arab merchant, did a lot of intelligence gathering
and after visiting Malindi, Sofala and eventually landed in Lisbon where he
presented his report, In 1496 Vasco da Gama armed with Covilha’s report
left Lisbon with his flotilla of ships on his epic journey to India and the
East. The following year, in 1497 he reached the Sultanate of Kilwa where
he tried to make contact with Kilwa vassals in Mozambique. Mombasa and
Malindi seeking their cooperation as staging posts for the Portugese fleets
on trading missions. In 1500, the second Armada under Pedro Alvares Cabral
arrived in Kilwa but failed to negotiate with the sultanate. For the next
decade or so there were intrigues, double crossing and counter coups and
assassinations by and within family members of the local leaders and the
Portuguese slowly succeeded in establishing footholds in Eastern Africa and
even erected the fortress of Santiago on Kilwa and left a garrison
behind, under the command of Pedro Ferreira Fogaça.

Meanwhile Goa was a mosquito ridden swamp, with Hindus. Muslims clashing
with each other and intrigues and alliances enacted all over again.

Portuguese rule was not very welcome by the various vassals . Particularly
grating was the mposition of Portuguese Mercantilist laws on the sultanate,
forbidding all but Portuguese ships to carry trade in the principal coastal
towns. The majority of traders and merchants from Kilwa were thrown out of
business.including the lucrative trade in gold, ivory, gum etc.
Eventually trading companies from England, the Netherlands, France would
dominate .

Those responsible for inquisition were lustful (yes ) psychopaths, greedy
to the core, more interested in acquiring land and wealth of those they
enjoyed torturing, burning etc. Was SFX disgusted with what he saw in
Goa.? Jesuits, like SFX converted people by making them understand.so
language, customs were important/ Soon the Jesuits would earn the wrath of
the conservative Bishops and Popes !

Some time ago, I picked the book “ Slaves And Sultans” Alan Machado Prabhu
who comes from Aldona, where my maternal Grandfather and Grandmother built
their home. Most of Machado’s family were lost. After numerous examples of
heroism, for instance Mendes who sacrificed his life by pretending he was
Tippu, Pinto who organized an escape route Pascal Gonsalves who defied
authorities to visit his aged mother. Peter Rego who defied the authorities
and built a chapel in Manglore. Therefore in his conclusion he states:

*These and many ordinary men and women, boy and girls mainly unsung and
unknown are and will continue to be, the real heroes” *

Nelson who raised the whole issue of being a Christian, came to the
conclusion that following the Beatitudes was more important than merely
following rituals. I agree. Christ himself did not live in the temple, he
preached, he cured, he asked the Samaritan woman for water,

Finally there are more than a millionCatholics all over the world. Are
they all stupid to believe that there is a Higher Being, that we humans.
While the vast majority profess a belief be it Hinduism, Moslems or
Buddhist , there is no war between the Gods.

Therefore . Pray can anyone explain why SFX did not impose the Inquisition
in Japan or Malaysia etc

[Goanet] ACACIO TAVARES – RIBANDAR’S MAN OF THE MOMENT

2019-12-08 Thread Aires Rodrigues
A very proud moment for Ribandar with our very multi-talented Acacio
Tavares having been selected for this year’s Goa State Cultural Award in
Western Music.

For Acacio what began as a hobby during leisure time strumming his guitar
later on turned to be his profession with a passion. Acacio first stumbled
upon an opportunity to play for a band “Moody Blues” in 1971. He later
played for ‘Planets’ ‘Chain Reactions, ‘Diffusions’ and ‘Modulators’.

In 1985 everything changed for the better with Acacio setting up the
‘Purple Rain’ with his fellow Ribandar musicians. ‘Purple Rain’ has been
reigning the music arena for over three decades enchanting the audience all
over. Besides playing across the nook and corner of Goa, the ‘Purple Rain’
has performed at Kolhapur, Manipal, Hyderabad, Cochin, Bangalore, Bombay,
Indore and Calcutta. At the International level they have performed in Abu
Dhabi for the ‘Manglorean Day’, in Kuwait for ‘Goa Day’ and on four
occasions in Dubai for ‘Goa Carnival’.

‘Purple Rain’ led by Acacio besides playing for Dances, live shows has the
distinction of playing for weddings of parents and their children too. The
‘Purple Rain’ has played at State sponsored Cultural and Food festivals,
the famed ‘Bonderam’ in Divar besides the New Year celebrations at Vasco
for the last 25 years.

Acacio’s varied talents knew no bounds. Besides playing for the band,
Acacio was a part of the cultural troupe “Alegria” which performed on
Government and private boat cruises besides performing at the 5 star Hotels
and in various States in India and abroad. The troupe ‘Alegria’ has the
distinction of playing for the VIPs during their visits to Goa. Being part
of the troupe Acacio had the privilege of performing before the
distinguished international dignitaries like the then Pope John Paul II,
King Hussein of Jordan, this country’s dignitaries the then President of
India Zail Singh, then Vice President of India Shri Venkataraman, then
Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi and Cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma.

In addition to being a very talented musician that he is, Acacio has been
an avid football enthusiast and organized the once very famous ‘Bala Bala
Football Tournament’ for the villagers of Ribandar from 1982 to 1995.

Acacio has never missed on taking part in the Ribandar’s local festivities,
during the village carnival of yesteryears dressed in various costumes
during the 3day carnival with his friends and would go around the village
in disguise entertaining the villagers. He would play his guitar while the
folk would join in singing during the ‘Passoi’ held on the last day of
Carnival.

With his heart and soul fully immersed for Ribandar, Acacio though not a
professional actor has since 1985 been taking part in our traditional
Ribandar Tiatr held every January near the Fondvem Chapel.

In his entire journey his wife Lalita and daughters Wanda & Eunice have
been his strongest support system. Let us wish our one and only talented
Acacio Tavares all the very best.. Bala Bala Music… If music be the food of
love then long may Acacio play on.
