Ephesians 6:1-4
===

1 Children, obey your parents [in the Lord], for this is right.

2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a
promise,

3 “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth.”

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with
the training and instruction of the Lord.

[Goanet] A Short History Of The TOI

2020-07-21 Thread Roland Francis
The Times of India (TOI) is an Indian English-language daily newspaper and
digital news media owned and managed by The Times Group. It is the
third-largest newspaper in India by circulation and largest selling
English-language daily in the world. According to Audit Bureau of Circulations
(India). It is the oldest English-language newspaper in India, and the
second-oldest Indian newspaper still in circulation since its first edition
published in 1838. It is nicknamed as "The Old Lady of Bori Bunder", and is an
Indian "newspaper of record".

➖

Beginnings

The Times of India issued its first edition on 3 November 1838 as The Bombay
Times and Journal of Commerce. The paper was published on Wednesdays and
Saturdays under the direction of Raobahadur Narayan Dinanath Velkar, a
Maharashtrian social reformer, and contained news from Britain and the world,
as well as the Indian Subcontinent. J.E. Brennan was its first editor. In 1850,
it began to publish daily editions.

In 1860, editor Robert Knight (1825–1892) bought the Indian shareholders'
interests, merged with rival Bombay Standard, and started India's first news
agency. It wired Times dispatches to papers across the country and became the
Indian agent for Reuters news service. In 1861, he changed the name from the
Bombay Times and Standard to The Times of India. Knight fought for a press free
of prior restraint or intimidation, frequently resisting the attempts by
governments, business interests, and cultural spokesmen and led the paper to
national prominence. In the 19th century, this newspaper company employed more
than 800 people and had a sizeable circulation in India and Europe.

➿

Bennett and Coleman Ownership

Subsequently, The Times of India saw its ownership change several times until
1892 when an English journalist named Thomas Jewell Bennett along with Frank
Morris Coleman (who later drowned in the 1915 sinking of the SS Persia)
acquired the newspaper through their new joint stock company, Bennett, Coleman
& Co. Ltd.

➰

Dalmia Jain Group Ownership

Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd was sold to sugar magnate Ramkrishna Dalmia of the
then-famous industrial family, the Dalmias, for ₹20 million (US$280,000) in
1946, as India was becoming independent and the British owners were leaving.
Sir Stanley Reed edited The Times of India from 1907 until 1924 and received
correspondence from the major figures of India such as Mahatma Gandhi. In all
he lived in India for fifty years. He was respected in the United Kingdom as an
expert on Indian current affairs. He christened Jaipur as "the Pink City of
India".

In 1969 operations of Times Of India was taken by Government from the
Dalmia-Jain Group following the Vivian Bose Commission Report.

Back to the Jain family

In 1976, during the Emergency in India, the Government transferred ownership of
the newspaper back to Ashok Kumar Jain, who was Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain's son
and Ramkrishna Dalmia's grandson. He is the father of the current owners Samir
Jain and Vineet Jain). The Jains too often landed themselves in various money
laundering scams and Ashok Kumar Jain had to flee the country when the
Enforcement Directorate pursued his case strongly in 1998 for alleged
violations of illegal transfer of funds (to the tune of US$1.25 million) to an
overseas account in Switzerland.

The Times in the 21st century

In late 2006, Times Group acquired Vijayanand Printers Limited (VPL). VPL
previously published two Kannada newspapers, Vijay Karnataka and Usha Kiran,
and an English daily, Vijay Times. Vijay Karnataka was the leader in the
Kannada newspaper segment then.

The paper launched a Chennai edition, 12 April 2008. It launched a Kolhapur
edition, February 2013.

TOIFA Awards

Introduced in 2013 and awarded for the second time in 2016, "The Times of India

[Goanet] COVID-19 ARRIVES AT RIBANDAR

2020-07-21 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is a matter of great concern and so very disturbing that the deadly
COVID-19 virus has now penetrated through our fortress of Ribandar.

But let us be ever so kind, considerate and supportive to these patients
and their dear families. May they continue to be in our prayers and with
the Almighty’s abundant compassion may they recover.

It shall be my committed endeavor to monitor the well being of my these
fellow Ribandarites and to ensure that at all cost they rightfully get the
best of possible medical care and treatment.

This highlights the critical need for all of us to be vigilant and hope the
authorities redouble their efforts to test track and trace effectively and
urgently and provide the much needed medical care to deal with a
destructive virus that shows no sign of abating.

Let’s keep our faith in the Almighty. God is great

[Goanet] GBA condemns instigation of attacks against Claude Alvares : GMPF being used by illegal mining lobby

Such massive fraud and illegalities are a crime against the people of Goa
and the state as well as the Union of India. With such a background, we are
aghast that the State Government can sit back and allow such public
instigation of violence to continue against a person who has dutifully
upheld the law.

Calls for attacks on Claude in this case amounts to an attack on the laws
of India and the Supreme Court; and should not be tolerated. This is a
slide into chaos.

What we see is diversionary tactics, with the Goa Mining Peoples Front

[Goanet] WRONG PRIORITIES

2020-07-21 Thread John Eric Gomes
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TODAY
The PM states in India and at world forums that his motto is Sub ka Saath, Sub
ke Vikas. and sub ka Vishwas. But he has not said much or pointedly disapproved
of intolerence shown by politicians or police or fundamentalist outfits! For
examlpe it is reported that the HJS (HinduJanajagruti Samiti) is to organise a
webinar on "hundreds" of Bollywood films being against Hindu culture,
dharma, deities and saints hurting Hindu sentiments. The enjoyable film "PK"
gave a humorous view of all religious leaders and ceremonies of all major
religions as seen by an alien! Great acting and creativity. We have a
Constitution, government censor board and the law. There is great activity
promoting building of a great Ram temple. In a democracy, it is impossible to
cater to everyone's sentiments and diversity in our society will collapse! If
government really cares, they will stop all other activities that can wait and
concentrate all their resources, time, and energy in discussing, helping and
going out of their way to help the warriors fighting and infact dying in their
endeavours to stem a hopless case of increasing infections amidst lack of
resources! The PM needs to walk the talk in the interest of a proud nation that
can tolerate criticism, laugh at itself, encourage the arts and creativity.
Perhaps like visiting the army establishments, visits to these warriors will
help to boost their morale and also expedite what they and the people need to
survive Covid! Every citizen and even the army is not safe today from rapid
Covid expansion?

[Goanet] THIS POLITICAL PROSTITUTION MUST STOP

2020-07-21 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In these extraordinary times with COVID-19 raging, the concerted efforts of
the government should have been solely on battling the dreaded virus. But
amidst this global crisis, the BJP has been brazenly engaged in the malaise
of toppling duly elected State governments.

After Madhya Pradesh, it is now Rajasthan with Jharkhand next in line and
this horse trading may then land in Maharashtra too. The BJP with its now
huge money Power has been engineering defections with the convenient
assistance of the CBI, ED and IT which have all lost their autonomy.
Ironically the Pandemic is cited as a handy reason not to hold sessions of
the legislature but the politriks of defection is going on galore.

The Anti-defection law came into force in 1985 to deter the endemic of
political defections by legislators motivated with the lure of office and
monetary gains. The intent of the law was to prevent corruption by way of
horse-trading. MPs and MLAs should be debarred from holding public office
for five years and from contesting the next election if they defect.

Our Goa may be India’s smallest State but has become a laboratory for every
possible political experiment and has been in the news for all the wrong
reasons. We have shown the nation the ways and means to circumvent the
Anti- Defection law, with political prostitution and party turncoats at its
very hilt.

Ethics should always be an integral part of politics. Citizens demand
ethical behaviour from the political leadership. They expect leaders to
make moral judgements of process and policy where transparency and zero
tolerance to corruption and nepotism will be paramount. Lawmakers have a
fundamental and moral duty to lead by example and must never be law
breakers or abuse the trust that people have vested in them. Authentic
Leadership can only be practiced through ethical Governance.

The late American President, John F Kennedy declared ‘the basis of
effective Government is public confidence and that confidence is endangered
when ethical standards falter or appear to falter’. These wise words have
proved to be prophetically true of our nation currently lacking in
authentic leadership and good, effective Governance.

[Goanet] GOA FOUNDATION IS BEYOND REPROACH

2020-07-21 Thread Stephen Dias
GOA FOUNDATION IS
BEYOND REPROACH

Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

The Goa Foundation is an NGO of impeccable credentials. In fact, on several
matters involving the Supreme Court, they are the voice and power of the
people especially as far as the environment and especially its protection
is concerned. It is preposterous that the NGO that has been the bulwark of
conscientiousness is being sought to be probed for illegal funding. It may
be emphasized that after the Justice M B Shah Commission Report unearthed
massive illegal mining in Goa amounting to Rs. 35,000 crore involving
politicians in collusion with mining companies and the bureaucrats, the Goa
Foundation moved the Supreme Court and stopped the illegal mining in the
state which had reached beyond control and which became a free for all. The
Supreme Court immediately brought down the gavel and stopped the illegal
mining in the State which bled the exchequers both as the Centre as well as
the State from further spinning out of control. The environment is
paramount and the Goa Foundation for decades together has been the
conscience among NGOs as they have through only legal means which is
undoubtedly the only forum through which the exposure of the illegalities
can be redressed as on a number of cases they have moved the Supreme Court,
the apex forum in the country where grievances pertaining to saving the
environment of Goa is concerned. Mining excesses in the State should not be
allowed to spread without credible checks and balances, where caution is
thrown to the wind and illegal mining becomes a scourge on the export of
Goa's ores much against environment in the State. As far as this is
concerned, I hope that the premiere NGO succeeds in stopping the
destruction of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary as well as the
National Park in Mollem. Full marks to the Goa Foundation who have been
doing a fantastic job and should not discourage him for fighting for the
benefit of Goans.
