[Goanet] Sons of the Soil or Soiled Sons?

2020-10-26 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Sons of the Soil or
Soiled Sons?

Few people understand the tragic story
of Goa although it not far to see; in fact, only
too near and like the fish in the water
fail to see the water!

After the freeing of Goa more than
half a century ago the power which
was in the hands of the Portuguese
fell into the hands of outsiders - people
who did not have their roots in Goa.
They called the shots and ran the show.
The newly freed slaves of colonialism
were free to enjoy their newly found freedom
and for a while celebrate freedom to the full.

Goa was a union colony then and was
very much controlled from Delhi, and
the Congress Party. Monsoon clouds
gradually began to cloud the skies but
the sun did shine as Goans got jobs
on cruise liners and had access to
Portuguese passports. Gradually,
the Middle East absorbed more
and more Goan labor.

Meanwhile government jobs in Goa
were going into the steady hands of
people from Maharashtra and
Karnataka. Goan jobs were
limited to the taxi business or
the hospitality industry where
Goan boys interned at 5 star
hotels before getting the much
prized certificate which helped
to launch a career aboard a ship.

Upper management jobs were
seldom in the hands of Goa; however,
a small minority, very small did manage to
achieve some level of success. Over
the years, the crab mentality of the
Goans coupled with the group loyalty
of outsiders made the situation even
worse for the locals.

Goa has changed, and so have Goans.
Not only land prices have gone through
the roof but so have Goan values of old and
integrity. Older Goans might still remember
how we took pride in our honesty and
sense of fair-mindedness. Today, all this
is no more than a mirage.

Power has changed hands over the years
and, by and large, is now in the hands of
outsiders who are no better or worse than
Goans. There is one difference, though.

Outsiders and non-Goans, even people who
enjoy living in Goa, do not have strong enough
feelings for Goa and don’t think twice to
support unnecessary and destructive
development if it means more money
in the bank.

Come to think of it a great many locals,
especially people with power, may claim
to love Goa, too. Their claim is an untruth as
they love Goa with all their mind and
wonderful words though their heart belongs
not to Mummy but Money.

[Goanet] Shift Bainguinim solid waste treatment plant... CITY MAILBOX PLEASE

2020-10-26 Thread Stephen Dias
Shift Bainguinim solid
waste treatment plant

Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

On deeper introspection, I have realized the folly of setting up the solid
waste treatment plant at Bainguinim as its closeness to the World Heritage
site of Old Goa with its ornate churches in particular the Basilica de Bom
Jesus as well as the iconic Sè Cathedral will definitely affect this holy
city which is a tourist attraction for very discerning visitors from far
and wide. Besides these two churches other monuments such as the Santa
Monica convent which houses the Museum of Christian Art as well as the St.
Cajetan Church among others are marvels of intricately crafted Renaissance
era architectural genres, which will never be replicated again. Also the
residents of Old Goa as well as neighbouring Corlim, Carambolim, St Andrè
annd other villages nearby are up in arms against this waste treatment
plant. It is thus the duty of the North Goa MP and the MLAs of Tiswadi for
whom this plant will benefit to scout for an alternate site any where else
in Tiswadi. As long as, the monuments of Old Goa with its unique old world
charm exists, the Bainguinim waste treatment plant should not come up there
at close vicinity. Goa does not have an efficient disaster management
response force to deal with the effects of malfunctioning of the plant and
also industrial depreciation of machinery is 10-15% per year, which means
that the plant can be guaranteed for 10 years only at the most.
We, in Panjim and Taleigao already facing incompetency of garbage
collection and heavy accumulation and foul smell on roadside is seen all
over the city limits. Prudence necessitates an alternate site.
