[Goanet] Fr JADa Costa leaves a legacy to cherish

2021-08-30 Thread Nelson Lopes
Threatened, resorts to defamation game
To sully reputation, records ,popularity and his name
Acts of deceit of receipts weighed on mind
Ambitions of promotions, an axe to grind.

English mass , stopped loss to parish
A boon to surrounding villages to cherish,
Self ,business interest ,prominence at stake
Defamation strategy , no dent did make.

Focussed energies on the building to raise
Monumental efforts to get funds deserve praise
Obstruction to science stream, never did yield
accomplished a dream with influence he does wield

Approach and surroundings to college vital need
Stage on the ground, lighting,a shelter at cemetry praiseworthy indeed
High mast , vandalism of assets to check
A freak accident rolled progress back

The Cemetry renovated beautified a lift and face,
Extension ended encroachment ensured space
Ground outside ,raised .,levelled a place to park
Cemetry painted , graves built mothing to bark

Mother Theresa chapel prevented from ruins and fall
Aesthetic tribute to St Vaz stands tall
College painted and a well conceived hall
A boon to Parishioners a facility for all.

Double fans ,Chandeliers enhance comfort and grace
Retreats , spritual activities occupied equal space
A hearse van , a morgue feel the void and need
A niche to st Anthony , renovation of Monument on cards indeed

Soccer lover conducted st Vaz tournament of football
Promoted music school took imitative and call
Wrote lyrics produced CD amazed all
In life high and mighty with illness do fall

Accomplishments
. galore leaves legacy behind
Trust institutes awards in his honour to remind
A sports magazine salutes him raises the toast
A writer, playwright, preacher ,soccer lover, steeped in sprituality
rightly can
 boast

Fr JA da Costa is entombed, etched in the minds and hearts
Leaves a legacy of monumental achievements as he departs
Parishioners wish him long life, good health
To passionately work for the glory of good and humanity till last

[Goanet] QUO VADIS ATAL SETU?

2021-08-30 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Atal Setu across the River Mandovi which was amidst great fanfare
projected to be Goa’s wonder is so soon headed for a disaster.

The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) which has been
alleged to be a den for rampant corruption has to be made answerable for
this nightmare.

The huge potholes on this bridge and other recurring defects is a matter of
concern. The problems may now be perennial. An independent probe and audit
of the bridge is required to fix responsibility. The contractor must be
brought to book and the GSIDC officials must be also fastened to the
nearest lamppost if they colluded in this colossal loss to the state
exchequer.

After two years of its inauguration the work of the bridge is not yet
completed in all respects and the debris lying all over. More importantly
the work on one arm of the bridge which was supposed to be for entering the
city has been abandoned and there is no explanation whatsoever.

The government must also ensure that the existing traffic bottlenecks from
Guirim to Porvorim are cleared, without which the traveling time from North
to South Goa will not be curtailed which was one of the tall objectives of
Atal Setu.

Re: [Goanet] Corruption in Goa

2021-08-30 Thread George Pinto
Leon Trotsky once wrote "You may not be interested in war, but war is
interested in you". Many Goans have been clueless and indifferent to the land
war being waged against them till it hits their doorstep and then they wake up.
There is a global land war being waged against ordinary citizens by their own
governments - everywhere, even is so-called democracies. An attack on rights,
income, primarily with the end goal of usurping land and its related resources.
In the last 20 years, the land wars have come to Goa and ethnic Goans are badly
losing the war. Not only is the government lined up against them but powerful
outside forces collude with Goa's own building and mining mafia. And let's not
forget many "journalists" are either the front for the land mafia or clueless
as to what is going on, either way does not reflect well on "journalism".  Only
a few are not timid or compromised.

Look in any direction in Goa and there is a land scam in progress. And Goans
have been complicit along with the legal profession which helps with the
"paperwork regularisation" (land scams cannot happen without lawyers). Even
diaspora Goans refuse to assist their own family in Goa and would rather sell
ancestral land to a non-Goan rather their own family (who by the way may not
always be angels). Or the other stupidity happens - donate land to the
church/temple which in turn engages with the land scammers.

You reap what you sow.

[Goanet] GOVERNANCE BY ELECTIONS

2021-08-30 Thread John Eric Gomes
HASTE MAKES BIG ERRORS IN GOVERNANCE!
Ever since 2013, there have been good ideas but a rush to implement
dismantling all the checks and balances that would have delayed the matter but
avoided the unseen bitter consequences that unprivileged people would have to
suffer, also trampling on human rights in some cases and creating monopolies,
crony capitalism and imbalance in nature and a democratic nation. A lot of
hype, slogans and acche din promised! The Covid pandemic has created more
Indian crorepattis but rampant poverty, unhapiness and deprIvation for others.
The High Court has quashed the Centre's notification on blue flag certification
for Miramar beach since the central government was not justified in dispensing
with public notice and so on! In UP a Muslim shop having a Hindu perceived name
is forced by goons to change it. No action by police since no complaint! In MP
another Muslim is bullied and told to chant "Jai Shri Ram" or else! Video going
viral, police forced to act. Nether the PM or Mohan Bhagwat will order stop;
this is wrong. Christians in northern Indian villages are also having to
tolerate religious bullying. The BJP is encouraged to think they own India,
ignore democratic values and rule in a civilised nation with some Taliban ideas
held by their netas unchecked until there is violent objection and backlash?
Like the Delhi riots, college orders girls cannot go out after 6PM without male
escort, rape happens and cannot be stopped/is due to being out alone at night,
love jihad, adults cannot choose mate of another religion/caste,enforced
sometimes brutally by vigillantes with State patronage etc. Are we working
towards a Hindu Pakistan?
Bad undebated laws passed , great emphasis on elections to the utter
comparative neglect of daily bread and butter issues are taking a heavy toll on
the citizens of this country especially the labor, poor, elderly and the great
digital and economic divide being created. The massive government election
recruitment rush when already overstaffed and new economy requiring work from
home and paperless offices is creating a millstone around people's necks which
they will have to carry into the future paying high salaries, perks and pension
to VRS staff?

[Goanet] Let us mingle together and its Konknni adaptions

2021-08-30 Thread Pratapananda Naik
Let Us Mingle Together
As a researcher, my mission and passion are to constantly search for
authentic sources for information. It is a tedious, tiring, at times
frustrating experience, and ongoing process. Yesterday in my WhatsApp
groups, I shared a brief note about the most popular Konknni hymn “Søkkødd
Sangata Mellyam” sung during the novenas and feast day of Mônti Fest,
namely, the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady in Coastal Karnataka and
elsewhere too. Then in the evening, I started my quest to find more
information about the origin of this hymn. These are my findings so far.
1. “Søkkødd Sangata Mellyam” is partly a translation and partly an
adaptation done by an unidentified (to me till date) diocesan priest or a
layperson of Mangaluru Diocese (earlier undivided Mangalore Diocese) who
knew Konknni well and was a creative poet in early 20th century and not in
the late 19th century as I mentioned in my WhatsApp note yesterday (29th
September 2021). I say this based on the fact that the first Konknni hymnal
in Konknni in Kannada script was called “A Hundred Konkani Hymns --- Xembor
Konknni Køn'tigo'' (henceforth XKK). It was printed by the Jesuit priest
Fr. Luigi Doneda sj, in 1890 at the Codialboil Press, Mangaluru. This press
was started in 1882 by the Italian Jesuits after their arrival to Mangaluru
in 1878. Fr Doneda was the manager of this press for 43 years. In 1924 this
printing press was handed over to the Diocese of Mangalore. Now this press
is run by the Diocese of Mangalore at Mary Hill, Konchady, Mangaluru in its
new building since 1965. In the XKK hymnal there are 100 old Konknni hymns.
A good number of them were taken by the Catholic Konknnis from Goa when
they migrated to Coastal Karnataka. In it there are 13 hymns exclusively
for the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady and 35 other hymns of Our Lady.
But in this list “Søkkødd Sangata Mellyam” is not to be found. This means
the said hymn was not found in Konknni when XKK was printed. In 2016, the
21st edition of XKK was printed. In this edition the hymn is included. I do
not know in which edition of XKK this hymn was first included. If we get
this information, then more or less we know the year of its composition.
2. So far, I could not find out who composed the lyrics, music and the
year of composition of the English hymn “Let Us Mingle Together”. It is
found in the hymnal called “The Sodalist’s Hymnal” (pages 250-253)
containing a collection of Catholic Hymns set to original and selected
harmonized melodies. It was prepared and edited by Edwin F. MacGonigle in
1887 with the copyright of the book in Philadelphia, USA. From the style
and theme of the hymn, it must have been composed by a priest or nun to be
sung in the month of May dedicated to Our Lady. I have attached here the
cover page and the lyrics with music notation. In this hymn there are 6
verses and one refrain (chorus).
3. The unknown lyricist who adapted “Søkkødd Sangata Mellyam” from the
English hymn “Let Us Mingle Together” retained 6 verses and one refrain
(chorus). He must have got this English hymn from the Jesuits. He must have
done the adaptation only in the early 20th century.
4. Since “Let Us Mingle Together” hymn contains reference to “Bring
choicest of flowers search the woodland and grove, wreath a crown for Our
Lady as a pledge of our love”, an anonymous priest of Mangaluru Diocese in
mid-20th century associated the Konknni version of it with the novenas and
the feast of Mônti Fest, which they were celebrating much earlier. Since
the theme was connected with flowers and Our Lady and the melody was quite
simple and melodious, it must have spread to other parts of the diocese and
to Coastal Karnataka.
5. Coastal Karnataka Catholic Konknnis went to Mumbai (earlier Bombay)
for job opportunities in late 19th century and early 20th century. Since
the majority were from the Mangalore Diocese, they were wrongly labelled as
“Mangaloreans” to distinguish the Catholic Konknnis of Goa, who called
themselves as “Goans”. Karnataka Catholic Konknnis at Mumbai saw the
Catholic Konknnis of Goa do celebrate Mônti Fest with flowers (minus
blessing of new corn in the church and having vegetarian meals). Since the
Konknni dialects of these communities vary in vocabulary, at Mumbai,
“Søkkødd Sangata Mellyam” hymn of Kannada script got a new title “Sogott
Sangata Mell’ia” in Roman script changing a few words with the colloquial
Bardes Konknni of Goa including faulty spelling and grammar! It too had 6
verses and one refrain. This hymn is found in the hymnal “Hosanna ---
Sogllea Vorsac Upkarchim Concanim ani Latin Bhaxechim Gaianam”. The First
Edition was printed on 31st October 1926 at Karachi, Pakistan. The Silver
Jubilee Edition was printed on 28th October 1951 at Mumbai. Since I do not
have the first edition of this hymnal, I cannot say whether “Sogott Sangata
Mell'ia '' hymn is found in it or not. But it definitely is there in the

The computers supplied to schools under the Computer Literacy Scheme are
loaded with pirated Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.

It is high time that GITP prevails upon Government to introduce Free and
Open Source Software (FOSS) in schools.

While it is good to introduce robotics, does the Government intend to make
every student in Goa a robotics engineer?

Well that's just sceptical me. I am also trying to figure out where the
money angle is.

[Goanet] Fr. Benny

2021-08-30 Thread Mervyn Maciel
I was saddened to hear of Fr. Benny's death and send me
condolences to his family.
I knew Fr. Benny well and met him on several occasions during
his trip to London. He was even kind enough to review my first book
in his popular paper.
I loved reading his editorials in the paper(The Examiner) he
steered so well.
May his soul rest in peace.
