[Goanet] Notes : The Church in Bombay.

2021-10-24 Thread eric pinto

With thanks to Rev. Joseph Velinkar SJ. of the Heras Institute Of
History.
Although India was within the jurisdiction of the  Patronage power of the king
of Portugal, Rome and the Office of Propagation of the Faith, or Propaganda,
decided to appoint Vicars Apostolic in areas that were not served spiritually.
The vicarate in Bijapur became the Great Mogul's and stretched south to Burma.
In 1720, the Carmelite priest occupying the position assumed jurisdiction
over Bombay, at the request of the British !This vicarate of the Moghul would
soon become the vicarate of Bombay    Bassein fell to the Marathas and the
churches in Salcette were lost. The closing of Jesuit institutions lead to a
declineof Catholics for lack of education and influence. Restoration would only
begin in 1814.  The Italian Carmelites were in Bombay from 1720 to 1745, when
hurdles arose. The Archbishop of Goa, insisting on theright of Patronage,
demanded they obtain his permission to perform all priestly duties. A state of
disharmony followed, and soon the British got involved. The Carmelite head of
Bombay was expelled, to return only in 1773.   After some years, churches under
British jurisdiction were withdrawn from the control of the bishop of Goa and
restoredto the Carmelite bishop of Bombay, a volte face for the governor of
Bombay.
Double Jurisdiction     Was introduced in 1794 and four churches were to be
served by the Carmelite mission and two: Gloria and Salvacao along with Cavel
chapel by Portuguese priests. The Company gave the people the right to reject a
vicar named by the bishop.    The Bombay government next claimed the right of
sanction in the appointment of parish priests. In the case of  Salcette, the
civil regime denied the Goa Archbishop all rights of appointments.      In 1823
civil war broke out between the king, Manuel who was supported by religious
orders and the party of Queen Maria Gloria. The latter won and initiated a
process of church persecution. All religious orders were suppressed and
relations with the Holy See broken off. The Portuguese government neglected the
management of church affairs. The Holy See stepped in and created vicarates in
Madras, Bengal, and Ceylon, which Portugal opposed.

[Goanet] Organic Agriculture University for Goa: As Good As It Gets?

2021-10-24 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Not often can we say three cheers for anything in Goa recently, maybe,
two at the most!

But here is a case when the government is on track and not derailed as usual.

Plans and suggestions from the public need to be made so the
stakeholders, in this case, the people who live in Goa can reap the
maximum from this project.

May I add may two bits by suggesting the entire tourism coastal belt
be chemically free as not only an advertisement for global consumption
but for another reason.

We need more trees planted as coconut trees have been preventing beach
erosion for centuries now. New trees need to replace old and also
better looked after by the government by providing financial and other
support to the plantation owners.

All compound walls need to be demolished in CRZ 1 so the sand can move
freely to allow the winds to rebuild the sand dunes which the 5-star
hotels have dedicatedly destroyed over the past several decades.

Coconut plantains have been the mainstay of beach economic activity
along with fishing and they have to continue for several reasons
including Goan identity.

Please add further ideas and suggestions to make use of the proposed
organic agriculture university to be used to its fullest potential.
Thank you.

[Goanet] Dr. Manjunath Desai, Cardiologist at GMC, passes away

2021-10-24 Thread Rajan Parrikar
I didn't know him personally but I understand he was a leading light in
the Cardiology Dept at GMC. Such a bright light extinguished at so young an
age. Very sad day, and a big setback for Cardiology in Goa.

Dr. Guruprasad Naik has been tirelessly striving to build a top-notch
cardio capability in Goa (despite our politicians - no mean feat) for
several years now and Dr. Desai's passing will no doubt impact the project
adversely.

[Goanet] GREAT GOAN SPIRITS

2021-10-24 Thread ELVIDIO MIRANDA
GREAT GOAN SPIRITS
Elvidio Miranda
Cashew or coconut, Feni symbolises the great Goan spirits, which now has the
Geographical Indication (GI) tag which makes them more uniquely and
distinctively Goan. Like the feeling that you get when you look up to the
towering coconut palms swaying in the wind, lining the Goan coastline, Feni too
not only embodies but also gives you that heady feeling. You can have them
plain, with soda, lemon cold drink or with lime juice or mix them up in
cocktails and mocktails with fruits juices and other different blends to suit
your taste and take you to seventh heavens. All visitors to Goa, while
indulging in Goan folklore, culture and music, should experience these two Goan
spirits. They are appetizers too. Your holiday is not complete without
savouring these heady spirits. Do not over indulge, but taste these spirits of
Goa to fulfil your Goan holiday. Just in case you thought that they did not
have medicinal properties, if you catch a cold, pour Feni into a saucer, add
two teaspoonful of sugar and then burn the alcohol till you get a thick syrup
which is a sure cure for cold. Taste these great Goan spirits and make your
Goan holiday memorable.

Saxtti (Salcete) Konkani tutorials
By Dr Aida Dourado

Saxtti is perhaps the most musical of the Konkani
dialects, an apt vehicle for Goan Song... Saxtti
is distinguished from other forms of Konkani, by
its consistent use of elision [the omission of a
sound or syllable when speaking], almost every word
except the last being elided according to precise
rules. -- José Pereira, Micael Martins (†) &
António da Costa in Song of Goa: Crown of Mandos,
  Goa,1556-Broadway, 2010.

After being ignored and sidelined for ages, and
hardly ever studied, the Saxtti (or Salcete)
Konkani has its own set of online tutorials. These
come to you in simple-to-follow, byte-sized
tutorials, in a conversational format. The idea is
to help build your vocabulary and understanding of
the dialect. Suited for those who want to deepen
their knowledge of Saxtti, and those knowing some
other dialect of Konkani and wanting to encounter
this. Might be a bit confusing for those totally
  new to the language.

[Goanet] GOANS TO BE BURDENED WITH ANOTHER VVIP VISIT

2021-10-24 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu is coming later this week on a four
day visit to once again inconvenience the people of Goa.

Earlier this year he was here on an eight day long visit and it was
unnecessary traffic mayhem all over while his convoy of vehicles merrily
weaved its way through.

The authorities are required to ensure that the free flow of vehicular
traffic is not obstructed or blocked. We have time and again witnessed
during these VVIP visits sheer incompetence by the traffic regulating
authorities on account of which the commuting public is put to great
inconvenience. Such disruption of normal life is absolutely impermissible
and deplorable.

During his last visit Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu got the authorities in
Goa to clear all the pending bills of his contractor son-in-law Venkata Rao.
The real motive of this visit too may be no different.

Let us hope that the Vice-President during this visit at least will take
time to impress on his son-in-law about the need to ensure high quality
works in the construction of roads and other government projects which over
the last many years have been all selectively given to him.

May be the Vice-President should inspect and see for himself the shoddy
works across Goa by Venkata Rao’s MVR Infra Projects Pvt Ltd which is there
for all to see. Had this contractor not been politically so well connected
he would have been long blacklisted for all those inferior and substandard
works.
