--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Tri Continental Film Festival 2008 July 25 - 30, 2008 Goa, India http://www.moviesgoa.org/page/tri_continental/ http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricon/schedule_2008.pdf --- -- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM JULY 28: The pilgao Gram Sabha today witnessed an uproar over the panchayat's inability to stop the illegal mining activities in the panchayat and some abusive words by the people added fuel to the fire. Today the gram sabha was believed to see some heated discussion over the issue of mining as the panch members had earlier expressed that the authorities were not supporting them in the anti-mining agitations. When the issue of mining was raised the people demanded to know as to how many people have been employed by the company since 2004. They also highlighted the problems of pollution and damage done to fields due to mining. Several villagers demanded to revoke the license given to the company. People told about some of the illegal work carried out by the company including construction of a new jetty, loading point and a weighing bridge in the panchayat. Panch, Ajay Parab in his reply told that the company has failed in giving employment the villagers from Pilgao since last many years. On the issue of illegal mining in the area Parab told that the authorities are not supporting them and they are made to run from polar to the post. We approached every authority and complained against the illegal mining activities in our panchayat but no one is ready to take our complaint. Parab told the gram sabha. At this point some villagers accused few panchas for not supporting the issue. Enraged by the comments panch, Mahadev Vengurlekar tried to defend his position and told some of the villagers to sit down. A villager in a fit of anger orally abused the panch and the people in general sought to know as to what right Vengurlekar has in asking the villagers to keep quite. The meeting is chaired by the sarpanch and the panch has no right to stop someone from speaking Deelip Gawas and others said. The crowd was pacified when the sarpanch, Sangeeta Dhatkar told the gathering not to use slag language in the hall. Later, it was unanimously resolved to stop a work where illegal work is being carried out by the mining company. The topic of formalities for issue of Income certificate from the secretary also came up for the meeting. The villagers charged the panchayat and the secretary for making it compulsory for everyone to get signature from the respective panch member for getting the Income certificate when there is no such rule. As per the rule issuing of the Income certificate is the sole right of the secretary and the sarpanch has to sign on it the villagers told adding now the people have to search the panch and if the panch is not in good terms with the person he denies to sign. In this respect with the demand from the villagers it was resolved to cancel the extra formality and go as per the law. Issue of a pending road from Sarmanas to Tarwada also came up for discussion and the villagers charged that the proposal is pending since 1999. We had reserved about 3 lakh for the work but later no one looked into the matter. an ex-panch disclosed. The people also demanded to review the Below Poverty Line list and told that several names wrongly included in the list. At the end of the meeting the people got furious when a panch disclosed that the meeting has come to an end. The people demanded that they would not leave the hall till a resolution that was wrongly written during 2006-07 be re- written. Accordingly, the secretary wrote the resolution about the expenditure which was then opposed by the villagers. Indrayani Usapkar, Mahadev Vengurlekar, Ajay Parab, Satish Gimonkar , Sangeeta Dhatkar, and Dulo Bhamaikar were present for the meeting while Sandesh Govekar failed to attend the meeting.

[Goanet] Pilgaonkars return to their roots during Ganesh
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM SEPT 8: If nuclear families have had a separate existence from their clan, Ganesh Chaturthi is an occasion for them to return to their roots for a few days. The age old tradition of celebrating five days ganesh festival by Prabhugaonkar family from Gaonkarwada Pilgao has become an unique example as every year about 325 family members come together to celebrate the festival. On this day all the members of the family come together from several parts of the state and enjoy the festival. It is the time for all the members to come together, share their feelings and enjoy the festival in real sense Jaidev Prabhugaonkar a senior family member told Herald adding the tradition is going on since many years and this is the third generation which is now celebrating the festival with same vigor. During the five days the family members come together and all the food is prepared in the house by the women. About 60 to 70 women are involved in the daily chores right from the morning tea to the dinner. Jaidev explained The expense is bared by every member and we have maintained a special fund for the same; every year we contribute to it and now it has gone upto eight lakh. The five days are filled with lot of enjoyment where the women involve in singing, dancing and other rituals. A unique programme of the festival is the fugdi by men which is done during the second day. Fugdi which is the traditional Goan dance is mostly performed by women, but as per our tradition men perform this dance in our house during chaturthi Jaidev said. In the hoses there is also a small temple of goddess Rampurush. The second day is also important as on this day 'awsar' (man is possessed by goddess) comes on one of the family member and the goddess bless the entire family. Jaidev claims. The festival also involves several competitive and musical programmes. The Prabhugaonkars are celebrating the festival since several years and now as some of them are well settled they have also made golden ornaments for theidol. Re: [Goanet] Orissa Christians Suspect Hindu Hand Behind Saraswati Murder
-- Samir Umarye Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2008 05:51:48 +0530 From: Ancy D'Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] Orissa Christians Suspect Hindu Hand Behind Saraswati Murder To: Goanet [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ancy D'Souza seem to have just copied and pasted the news that he got from somewhereor more to it he seem to have acted like a PRO in this case without knowing detail facts. Here i am giving only SOME details from what i know about the issue.. It was Aug 23 when all were celebrating Gokulasthami that the gruesome murder of Swami Laxmananand Saraswati took place. About 28 persons entered the ashram and fired on swami in which he along with other 4 of his followers were killed. KANDHAMAL a hill region from Orissa. ..In 1994 the part of Kandhamal was separated from the Phulbani district. This new district was named Kandhamal as included the Hindu Schedule tribe population of Kandh (Kondh). They were the followere of Hindu religion and worshiped the nature and Hindu deity. Their poverty, illiteracy was the main cause which led some of the Christan missionaries to interfere into their personal life. Christians know only one 'god the lord' and they never worship nature or idol which at times they call a stone. Swami Laxmananand Saraswati was the man who stood against this conversion. Attempts were made by the missionaries to kill him several times in 1967,1961, 1976, 1978,1982,1986 and 2000. Everytime they missed their target. But, on Aug 23 the task of missionaries was fulfilled. Swami Laxmananand Saraswati had got a threatening letter on Aug 22 but the state authorities ignored it. On 9th Aug in the Raikiya Samaj Kendra run by christan terrorist there was a meeting held and the topic was to kill swami. It was attended by ex-MP, Nakul Nayak; ex leader of Tamudibandh village, Krishna padashet and some others (All converted christans). After the massacer of Swami Laxmananand Saraswati there was hardly any publicity that was given to the issue as it did not delt with the MINORITY. Later when the issue was taken up the police arrested a worker of the World Vision a Christan association from Kandhamala. Another two person from Gujiwadi Kikram Diggal and Wiliams Diggal were also arrested from the house of one Laal Diggal. ALL THE THREE ACCEPTED THAT THEY ASSISTED THE MURDER OF Swami Laxmananand Saraswati. When the situation went out of control the killers tried to pacify the situation by claiming that it was the work of Maoiest. That's the best thing any one could do at such a point of time when they have no other alternative but to save themselves from the SIN. But to their bad luck the Maoist had first only saved their skin by pasting posters in the district saying that they are not involved in the murder. Now this is another stunt of the Christan missionaries which Ancy D'Souza has tried to publish. Carry on till the DOOM'S DAY
[Goanet] BJP workers given crash course on media techniques
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM, SEPT 21 - If you can't beat them, make efforts to understand them. It was a political gathering with a difference, as 60 BJP workers were given a crash course on media techniques at a two-day media management training camp in Mulgao-Bicholim, which began on Saturday. The two-days residential camp was organised by the State BJP in association with the Rambahvu Mhalgi Prabhodhini (RMP) of Mumbai. This is the first time that we are organising a two-day training camp for BJP workers from every taluka, explained Shubhash Salkar, BJP General Secretary and Goa Media Cell Incharge. This is an attempt to make our BJP workers aware of the importance of the media in the political arena. There are several developmental works and meetings held at every level from the panchayat level onwards, but not all issues are reported in the newspapers, Mr Salkar added. He informed that representatives from all constituencies are attending the camp and experts would guide them on several media issues. Today, we need to explain to the people the efforts of the BJP and without the media, this is not possible. We cannot expect the media to come to us all the time and so, we need to approach the media. This is exactly the idea of the camp, Mr Salkar said. During the two-day camp, BJP workers were made aware on issues such as building relations with the media, writing press notes, organising press conferences and focusing on importance topics while writing news and stories for the media. We would like a BJP representative to handle the media and in this regard, there will be a special Press Unit of the party in every constituency, Salkar said. Resource persons at the camp include Maharashtra BJP Media Cell Incharge Keshav Upadhya (writing press notes), AIR News Reporter Balaji Prabhugaonkar (radio journalism), DD News Reporter Sunil Naik (television journalism) and RMP Chief Co-coordinator Ravindra Sathe (propaganda and publicity). National BJP Spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy will address the concluding function on Sunday.

[Goanet] Commuters want ferry wharf shifted
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM, APRIL 30 - Expressing displeasure over the Government's apathy in solving the ferry problem, commuters of Sarmanas-Tonk ferry have demanded the shifting of the ferry wharf for smooth and interrupted ferry service. Yogendra Narvekar informed Herald, that a memorandum signed by 150 commuters has been submitted to the Minister for River Navigation Sudin Dhavlikar. In a memorandum, commuters from Marcel, Sarmanas, Bicholim and other areas have demanded immediate solving of the long pending problem at the jetty. The Sarmanas-Tonk ferry is the only shortest route between Bicholim and Ponda for most people from the mining companies, government offices, industrial estates and students of schools and colleges from Bicholim and Marcel and as such is a busiest route, informed Mr Narvekar. The route along the Tonk side is narrow and rocky, making it inconvenient for ferries to cross during the low tide. The locals highlighted the problem several times and the desilting work was carried out, but it did not solve the problem. Due to the problem, the commuters face difficulty, as the ferry remains anchored for more than two hours during the low tide. At times, due to some technical faults only one ferry operates which worsens the situation and also puts extra burden on the vessel, said Mr Narvekar. The memorandum has asked the Government to remove the rocks submerged near the Tonk for the smooth functioning of the ferry during the low tide on priority basis. Other demands like deployment of extra ferry for meeting the emergencies and to shift the wharf to new location at Tonk where the problem of low tide would not exist are also made. A copy of the memorandum has been also sent to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.

[Goanet] MEGA DRAMA TO ENTHRALL GOANS
-- Samir Umarye BY SAMIR UMARYE The count down has began for the mega Marathi drama- first of it's kind in Goa- which would be packed with 225 artistes performing about 370 roles on a 6 storied revolving, moving, lifting and dangling stage. The masterpiece, herculean dream of some of the artists from Shri Vijayadurga Sanskrutik Mandal Keri Ponda has at last come true with their toilsome efforts. The mandal set up in 1991 came in lime-light when it organised 'Janata Raja' a mega drama based on the life of Shivaji Maharaj the Maratha warrior staged by famous Historian, Babasahebh Purandare. There we were just the organisers and since then we had a dream to create a masterpiece of our own and 'Sambhavami Yuge Yuge' is just a creation of our innate desires the writer of the drama Dr Narayan Desai explains. Directed by Dilip Desai 'Sambhavami Yuge Yuge', to be staged from November 8 at Goa Engineering College ground Ponda, depicts the life and message of Lord Shri Krishna. It includes the events of his birth, battle with serpent-demon Kalia, Govardhan Parvat miracle, encounter with Putna, Kansa, scenes from Mahabharata and several other episodes based on his life. The drama is full of dance and music with about 80 dancers which would enthrall the audience. The use of state-of-the-art technical inputs like sound, light, laser would further heighten the impact of the drama. To add to this there would be horses, elephants, chariots, cattles and other such things which are inseprable part of the play. Dr Desai points out, This is a record making project in the history of Marathi theater in terms of budget, physical dimensions of the stage setting as well as number of participants. Another important feature is that the whole exercise is by the Goans and is being premiered in Goa before it goes before national audience and beyond. We are planning to take the drama to other states including North India after dubbing it into other languages he disclosed. Ramayana and Mahabharat a are jewels of our scriptures with universal message. Lord Shri Krishna is not merely characters but heroes which embodies idealism and realism at philosophical plane. Dr Desai says. Eventhough the play has the same dimensions as that of 'Janata Raja' it has uniqueness of its own The Maratha King lived in modern times and had his impact on limited geographical territory. The hero of SAMBHAVAMI YUGE YUGE - Lord Krishna, as a part of our age-old civilisation, has mass appeal and influence not only in the country but the entire world: it is an universal figure Dr Desai explains. But the staging of this mega drama was not a child's play. The entire team had to burn the midnight oil, they had to undergo failures and at times the situation was not at all in their favour. The planes of organising the drama came to their mind way back in 2005 but the research took almost three years. In the mean time the production budget and the recurring cost was also redoubled. We contacted several prominent persons for guidance including Prabhakar Panshikar (Actor), Mohan Wagh (choreographer), Babasahaibh Purandare ( Historian/maker of Janata Raja), Jayantrao Salgaonkar ( Kirtankar) and several other prominent personalities, it was only when they were assured about our abilities that they helped us. Dr Desai claims. One of the hurdle was that of choosing a name and for that the committee chose a novel method. As a means of promoting participatory spirit, organisers appealed to people to suggest a title for the mega-drama. There was good response. The title was suggested by Shri. Prasad Tukaram Sawant, who was rewarded with a certificate and cash award in a public function. This mega structure would cover an area of about 17000 sq. mts.The stage will have five different levels starting from the ground, and drama will unfold on all these levels. On the top of these level there would be a huge statue of lord Krishna. The distance between the stage and the audience is around 60 mts. and the seating area will accommodate 6500 people. There will be space for smooth movement of people inside the stands and for parking of vehicles including buses, cars and two-wheelers outside Architect Rajeev Desai told. Goans are known for their artistic talent, and at times they have to leave the state to make a career.Young Goans would certainly gain confidence from this exercise and might venture for a better projects in the state Director, Dilip Desai hopes. The role of honour in staging this mega drama goes to all the committee members but the real persons behind the scene include the Stage Designer, Architect Rajeev Desai, Site Preparation incharge, Abhijit Sadhale, Setting Design and Production incharge, Dayanand Bhagat; Costume Design incharge, Digambar Singbal; Choreographer, Mayur Vaidya; Music Director, Ashok Patki; Light Design, Satish Gauns; Vijayadurga Saunskrutik Mandal President, Arun Desai. Goans are a drama lovers, they love and appreciate
[Goanet] Triangular fight on the cards for Pale by-election
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Renew your wedding vows in Goa, or gift a Ceremony Package to a close couple Multiple options to make your day extra special! http://www.renewalsetc.com -- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM- With just a week ahead?for the Pale by-election to be held on November 26, the election fervor is ascending as the campaign by?the main candidates is on in full swing gaining momentum by the day. Five candidates are contesting this by-election. The three main candidates are the Indian National Congress INC candidate, Mr Pratap?Gawas, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Dr Pramod?Sawant, and former BJP MLA and independent candidate, Dr Suresh Amonkar. Mr Jose Lobo of the Save Goa Front and Independent, Mr Rajendra?Rane are yet to begin their campaign in the right earnest. Going by the present political scenario in Pale constituency, political analysts are of the opinion that there seems?to be a triangular battle amongst Mr Pratap Gawas (INC), Dr Pramod Sawant (BJP) and Dr Suresh Amonkar (Independent). These three candidates have opened their election offices at Sanquelim. Besides, contact places in different villages have been identified?by them for the sake of workers? convenience. The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, Goa Pradesh Congress committee?(GPCC) President, Mr Subhash Shirodkar, Speaker of State Assembly, Mr Pratapsingh Rane, Health Minister, Mr Vishwajeet Rane, the Pale Congress Block Committee President and its members, sarpanchas and panchas of village panchayats are campaigning for their Congress party candidate, Mr Pratap Gawas. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) President, Mr Pandurang Raut and other members of the executive committee who were keen to fight the by-election stayed away from the contest. It must be noted here that with the MGP out of the contest the party votes are up for grabs by any of the other parties. The INC candidate, Mr Gawas has a favorable situation as there is possible chances of a split of BJP votes due to?BJP rebel and former BJP MLA, Dr Suresh Amonkar contesting as an Independent candidate. The BJP candidate, Dr Pramod?Sawant will have a tough fight as he has to battle rival candidate, Mr Gawas as well as Dr Amonkar who will try capture the BJP vote bank. Dr Amonkar has expressed full confidence about his victory. According to him, the battle is between him and Congress candidate, Mr Gawas who is also claiming the same equation. However, Dr Pramod Sawant has said that being a BJP candidate, he is getting a good response and support from the electorates of different villages in Pale constituency. The common man in Pale constituency is worried about the problems being faced by the people of this constituency in the past and at present. Neither of the party MLAs?that is MGP, Congress nor BJP have sorted out problems or requirements of the people. According to villagers, drinking water, electricity, health services, public transport service and above all, the roads are the main problems, which still exist. In the end, who will emerge victorious amongst the three viz Mr Pratap Gawas,?(Congress), Dr Pramod Sawant (BJP) and Dr Suresh Amonkar (Independent) is to be seen.
[Goanet] SGF now files complaint against Dr Amonkar
-- Samir Umarye PANJIM, NOV 20: While BJP leaders, stung by the rebellion, have criticised their former party president Dr Suresh Amonkar for contesting as an Independent for the Pale seat, today Save Goa Front (SGF) joined in filing a complaint with the Election Commission alleging that the former health minister in Parrikar cabinet, has given wrong information in the affidavit filed before EC earlier this month. Interestingly, SGF candidate Jose Lobo has taken up cudgels against Dr Amonkar. On the ground level, it's the saffron party which is feeling the heat of Dr Amonkar plunging in the fray. Lobo has alleged that Dr Amonkar has concealed his real income and assets, going by the affidavits filed in 2007 and now. He has pointed out that his residential house at Sanquelim which in May 2007 was valued at Rs 5.90 lakh is now valued at Rs 25.9 lakh. If he has made additions of Rs 20 lakh, it doesn't show in his income, Lobo argues. He was the Health Minister from November 1999 to early 2005. Lobo, filing his complaint under section 125 A of Representation of People's Act as well as under section 177 and 199 of IPC, has demanded necessary action from ECI. Meanwhile, BJP is leaving no stone unturned in trying to garner votes for its candidate Dr Pramod Sawant. BJP leaders are camping there with house-to-house campaign on, in a bid to wrest the seat from the Congress party. -- Samir Umarye

Parrikar Venue: Menezes Braganza Art Gallery, Panjim, May 21-24, 2008 http://www.parrikar.org/misc/doc-notice.pdf --- -- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM MAY 23: Even after two months of the suspected incident of food poisoning at Velgaum which killed two persons the Bicholim police are yet to get a solid evidence to reckon the exact reason behind the incident. It may be recalled that on March 20, eight members from a family in Velgaum, Bicholim including Laxmikant Anant Gobre (75), Shashikala A Gobre (60), Shalini L Gobre (45), Prachi Pradeep Gobre (35), Pradeep L Gobre (45), Anant L Gobre (32), Ganpati L Gobre (45) and Megha Pradeep Gobre (2), were shifted to GMC Bambolim after they experienced uneasiness. Laxmikant, who was a diabetic, died in the hospital at 10.30 pm, while his sister Shashikala, who was an asthma patient, died at 3.30 am on the same day. Pradeep, Ganpati and Megha were discharged in the next morning, while Shalini, Anand and Prachi recovered later in the month. According to villagers, the chain of events began on 16 when the family consumed some vegetables, including cabbage. Ganpati, who normally stays at Ponda, was also at Velgaum that day. The next day some members of the family started experiencing uneasiness and mild fever. The family ignored the symptoms and tried some household medicines instead of going to the doctor. On Thursday night, when their condition worsened, the family doctor was called in and he shifted them to GMC. The symptoms of all the family members were the same and it might be a case of food poisoning. Only the medical report will indicate the exact cause, the family doctor had commented. The blood samples of the family members were immediately sent to Forensic Medical Science Hyderabad to know the exact reason behind the incident. But, even after two months of the incident the Bicholim police are yet to get their hand over the report. We are yet to receive the report and we don't really know the reason behind the incident Bicholim PSI, Tukaram Walke who is investigating the case told Herald adding we don't really know the exact date when we would receive the report but now the condition of the other family members is normal.
[Goanet] Advalpal Anti-mining protest continues, political leaders meet agitators
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- The Rape of Goa - A photo documentary by Rajan P. Parrikar Venue: Menezes Braganza Art Gallery, Panjim, May 21-24, 2008 http://www.parrikar.org/misc/doc-notice.pdf --- -- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM, MAY 23 – Counter-complaints of assault were filed by residents of Advalpal and a mining company on Wednesday, as protests against mining activities continued on Thursday. Mining operations at one site began in the morning and continued till 10.30 am, when villagers in large numbers rushed to the site and forcibly halted the work. Trucks were also prevented from carrying the ore. A police force was deployed at the site to avert clashes between the agitating residents and mining companies. At about 1.30 pm, some truck drivers, including Shamba Sawant and Rajendra Sawant, reportedly entered into a heated argument with the protestors. Demanding an explanation from residents for unnecessarily stopping the trucks, the drivers insisted that differences should be resolved by residents and mining companies themselves. In the ensuing altercation, the two drivers were accused of assaulting Sandesh Gaonkar, Surekha Gaonkar and Shital Thanekar. A formal complaint was later registered against the drivers under Section 323 IPC. Mining officials also lodged a complaint against six villagers, accusing them of assaulting a security guard and trespassing into the mining site. The six villagers are likely to be arrested on Thursday, said Valpoi PI S M Vaingankar, who has been given additional charge of the Bicholim police station. Meanwhile, a group of residents squatted before the deputy collector's office in the morning, shouting slogans against the mining company and deputy collector. A police team rushed to the site and cordoned off the area to prevent the protestors from entering into the deputy collector's office. In the evening, the deputy collector along with a police force went to the mining site, but they were unable to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar has blamed the government for the ongoing mining agitation at Advalpal-Bicholim. Mining problems are not just related to Bicholim, but have also created tension in other parts of the State. The government is to be blamed for the problem as they have given lease to several mining companies, he said, after meeting the agitating residents on Thursday. About 200 agitators gathered near the deputy collector's office shouting anti-mining slogans on Thursday morning. MGP President Pandurang Raut after meeting the agitators urged Deputy Collector Arvind Bugde to resolve the issue. Mr Bugde said that he has informed the matter to the collector and a meeting would be convened in a few days. Mr Raut asked Mr Bugde to stop the mining activities till a solution is reached. Later, Mr Raut met the police and took stock of the situation. Meanwhile, agitators submitted a memorandum to the deputy collector asking for police protection and to stop the mining activities, without any delay. Agitators dispersed only in the evening at about 6 pm. A police force was deployed at the site to avoid any untoward incident.
[Goanet] Heritage group asks SMC to protect Sanquelim Fort
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM JUNE 4: The Heritage Action group has strongly asked the Sanquelim Muncipal Council (SMC) to preserve and protect the Sanquelim fort and it's rich cultural heritage. The incharge of the heritage cell, Prajal Sakhardande through a letter written to the SMC has asked the chairman,Vijaykumar Verekar to preserve the historical monuments. He has also given a detailed plan to restore the fort which might get damaged due to the proposed market complex in the area. The letter has also given the historical importance of the fort after preliminary observation by the team including the conservation architect, Ketan Nachinolkar. As per the report by Nachinolkar the fort was build by Bhosle of Sawantwadi. The structure which is located in the midst of the busy Sanquelim market was later conquered by the Portuguese Marquis de Alorna in 1746 . It was regarded as an important defense post guarding the passage from the ghats to the coastal territories with cannons positioned in the fort. Untill 1817 the fort possessed a set of eight cannons. The fort apparently was abandoned towards the end of the 19th century and fell to a ruinous state. The structure shows a very strong character of fort architecture built of large blocks of the locally available laterite stones. The fort presently houses the offices of the PWD. The interior of the PWD office has a typical military architectural style. It also has a well and several barracks. Due to lack of proper maintence and restoration the fort has now fallen to ruins. Several structural cracks in the walls could be seen in the office of the PWD, encroachment by the shops has also blocked the gateway to the fort. To add to this the SMC has now proposed a new building of the Muncipal council within the fort premises. We have asked the SMC to preserve the fort wall and the structure of the PWD office so that no damage is done to these sites Sakhardande told Herald adding the SMQ need to integrate the historical features into the proposed scheme to avoid isolation and neglect. This is a rich historical evidence about Sanquelim and the proposed building should not over shadow the fort Sakhardande stressed the chairman has responded positively and has promised to preserve the heritage.
[Goanet] Narve Bicholim residents unite to preserve Jain Temple
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM JUNE 12: With the government's apathy towards a ruined Jain temple the Villagers from Narve Bicholim, since a decade, are trying hard to save the last remains of the temple to maintain their rich heritage. The villagers from Narve Bicholim with a concern over the ruins of a Jain Temple have strongly expressed their displeasure over the Archiological department's apathy in maintaining this rich cultural heritage. Narve which is famous for the Saptakoteshwar temple also has rich a heritage which is totally neglected by the government. According to the villagers there is a Jain Temple in ruins which could be of historical significance. The temple is now totally in ruins and some of the stones are laying scattered in the area the ex-sarpanch of Narve village,Vithal Chodankar told Herald some years back at least the entrance of the temple was standing still, but now it has either submerged or broken down into pieces. The Jain Temple which once might have covered about 700 sq mts area is now difficult to identify. Huge slabs of historical importance are made to face the fury of nature and are the only testimony of a Jain temple in the area. The slabs have a peculiar design with swastik, goddess and an elephant on them. The ruins of the temple are laying in an inaccessible state on a hillock which is named as 'Jain coat' by the villagers. Several of the stones are either submerged under the soil, broken into pieces or covered with shrubs. The villagers at times clean the area and remove the shrubs in a bid to protect this heritage of their village. Long time back when Rane was the chief minister he had instructed to do an excavation at the site but no one turned up to take the responsibility Vithal Chodankar disclosed adding some 10 years back the department officers had taken some idols from the site but never bothered to preserve this heritage. During the course of time the villagers also recovered several idols and to save them from being smuggled they introduce a new technique. The idols were dumped into the near by river so that they remain in the village as it is our heritage and we felt it a need to protect it from being misused Chodankar claimed. The department had taken about three idols and i have noticed one of them in the museum at Old Goa and as per their claim it is dated 500 BC Khema Chodankar another villager told, questioning if the temple is so old then why is the government not trying to save it? Even as some of the idols were dumped into the river the villagers have kept one at a place near by and have given it a religious significance so that it remains safe in the area. As the government has turned nelson's eye over the issue the villagers have at least hoped that some of the disciples of the Jain sect would look into the matter to restore the temple.
[Goanet] Mining poses danger to ancient artifacts of Mulgao Bicholim
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM JUNE 12: The mining activities near Mulgao Bicholim has affected the rich heritage of the village where several antique elements including some religious artifacts seem to be in danger. Since long the villagers have found several idols, Shivlingas and Hero stones in the area a villager and a teacher by profession, Vidhyadhar Raut told Herald. Most of these artifacts were recovered from the near by lake which has been dried out due to mining activities carried out on the hillock. During our childhood we used to enjoy swim in this village lake but now it has totally dried out and it took just about 10 years for the entire change Raut laments adding several idols and ancient Shivlingas found in the village were dumped in the lake for safety and were later recovered when the villagers did an excavation. Some years back several people had smuggled many wooden idols from the village and we got the news only when the the damage was done Raut explained besides this the mining might have already destroyed the heritage as is evident from the dry village lake. Some of the Shivlingas have now been placed near the lake under a small thatched roof. By the side of this temporary structure is another Shivlinga which is carved out from the hillock and seem to be that of a laterite stone. The Shivlinga is very rare and from its make out it is likely to be one of the oldest in Goa the incharge of the Heritage Action cell, Prajal Sakhardande told Herald when he visited the site. Besides Shivlinga some Hero stones are also found in the village. One of the Hero stone which is half broken has been placed very close to the village and depicts four figures. While three of them are playing some musical instruments the other is shown laying down wearing a crown. The Hero stones are from the Kadamba period and are found at several places in Goa, they were carved in commemoration of the dead soldiers Sakhardande explained this proves that in olden days there might have been a war in the area and the stone is an evidence of the same. Even as the mining and other environmental factors are degrading the Mulgao's cultural wealth the villgers take pride in preserving and maintaining their village heritage. These stones and Shivlingas would be kept in the village and we are making efforts so that they can be maintained Raut claimed we have also proposed a special board so that the stones could be identified.
[Goanet] Advalpal- Bicholim gram sabha supports mining, restricts MEDIA entry
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM JULY 1: The Advalpal gram panchayat meeting today supported the mining activities in the village even as a violent mob restricted entry of the media persons in the gram sabha. Today's meeting was important as it was called specifically to discuss on the issue of mining and it's activities. It may be recalled that last month around 600 villagers of Advalpal including the local MLA, Rajesh Patnekar had marched on Advalpal mines paralyzing the mining operations for more than three days. The villagers especially women had later accused the deputy collector, Arvind Bugde for failing to take action against the mining companies and had resorted agitation near the deputy collector's office. Today as the mining issue was to come up for the Village panchayat meeting more than 150 villagers had gathered at the panchayat hall. The meeting started at about 11.00 am. The panchayat secretary read out the minutes of the previous meeting. A section of the villagers were enraged with the presence of the media persons including Samir Kolwalkar (HCN) and Samir Umarye (Herald). On seeing the media persons the mob became violent and sought the answer from the Sarpanch, Narayan Salgaonkar as to who has invited the media. There was a great commotion as the incident occurred just after the secretary read out the panchayat minutes. A section of villagers took the responsibility while the majority of them were against the media presence in the panchayat Hall. The villagers strongly demanded to discontinue the meeting if the media were allowed to remain present in the hall. The mob who was half in a drunk state also threatened to smash the camera of the news reporters. As some demanded media presence for the meeting the sarpanch told that there should be one third majority. The reporters sighting uproar over the issue preferred to backout. The meeting started after the retreat of the reporters and it was decided to support the mining activities in the area. The villagers also came down heavily on the Advalpal bachao samiti president, Shamsundar Gaonkar. They accused him of taking money from the mine owners and opposing the mining activities. About 140 villagers demanded that the mining companies should be allowed to continue their work in the area. All the panchas including deputy sarpanch, Ashwika Gawas, Sheetal Gadekar, Deelip Gadekar, Harishchandra Sawal were present for the meeting. Later in the evening the Bicholim Patrakar Sangh strongly criticised the move of the villagers calling it as a attack on the fourth estate. We strongly condemn the behavior of the Advalpal villagers and seek apology from them as they cannot suppress the truth the president of the Bicholim patrakar sangh, Ramnath Desai said adding the incident would also be reported to the Goa Journalist Association.

Interference by spouses of the female panchas in the affairs of the panchayat annoyed the residents, who gave vent to their anger by refusing to pass any resolution at the recent gram sabha meeting. The gram sabha convened at the panchayat hall was attended by Sarpanch Reshma Sawant and panchas including Sanjay Arondekar, Kajal Karbotkar, Nilkanth Nagvekar, Diksha Patre, Vinita Gaonkar, Suhasini Kinalkar, Krishna Chodankar Santosh Bhosle, Anita Naik and Tulshidas Chodankar. There are six women panchas in the 11-member panchayat. A resident, Vasudev Tari, and the president of the Poira Nagrik Kruti Samiti, Tukaram Ghatwal, raised the issue of the dominating husbands of female panchas in the panchayat. They claimed that the women panchas were dormant and that, all the decisions were being taken by their husbands, so much so that the husbands were also answering queries posed to their wives at the gram sabha. If the women panchas are not able to take decisions and carry out the affairs of the panchayat and their respective wards, they should resign, said Vasudev Tari, prompting an angry exchange of words at the meeting. Residents of Chimulwada-Mayem complained of erratic power failure and the sarpanch explained that the panchayat was unable to take up developmental activities due to insufficient panchayat funds. Panchayat Secretary Mr Parab informed the residents that a pending amount of Rs 5 lakh was still to be deposited by the outgoing panchayat panel. Kamlakant Shirodkar highlighted the bad condition of the roads at Ardhawad-Mayem and demanded that it should be repaired at the earliest. The issue of the mining activities also came for discussion and it was recommended that the mine owners be invited for the gram sabha and asked to comment on various issues including pollution, employment and safety.

[Goanet] Bicholim school has classes in verandah!
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM FEB 28: Imagine having your classroom in a verandah or having to travel a distance of 6 kms just to attend Science practicals and computer education. This is the fate of students from Government Primary and High School in Maulinguem-Kudchirem in Bicholim, who have to go all the way to the Government High School in Kansarpal, simply because facilities are absent in the Kudchirem school. The paltry facilities at the Kudchirem school are such that students of three classes are compelled to sit in the verandah of the school due to lack of space. The school has also been hampered with insufficient teachers. It may be noted that Government Primary School and High School at Deulwada-Kudchirem runs classes from Std I to Std X. About 15 students are studying in SSC. Though the SSC students are to answer their board exams in April, the school does not have teachers to teach them English, Mathematics and Social Science. As such, primary teachers are compelled to teach the SSC students. Moreover, the school lacks laboratory and computer facilities due to which students are compelled to attend Science practicals and computer education at the Government school in Kansarpal, about 6 kms from Maulinguem. Many students are now reluctant to attend classes due to non-availability of required teaching faculty and infrastructure. It is understood that the government had sanctioned approvals for the new school building premises through GSIRDC, however there has been no action by the government with the regard till date. Meanwhile, Maunlinguem-Kudchirem Sarpanch Digambar Gaonkar accompanied by all Panchas Shital Sawal, Rajan Usapkar, Madhu Naik, Shiva Gaonkar, Mahesh Gaonkar and Rashmi Gaonkar have unanimously demanded an immediate solution in the matter. Speaking to reporters, Mayem MLA Anant Shet stated that he has already forwarded the matter with the higher authorities. “I will contact the education minister in this matter for permanent solution,” he added.

It was only when i reached very close to the wild cat that i realised the seriousness of the situation he explained adding leopard along with it's two cubs was just half meter away from me and i was unable to decide what to do. There was no option, whole of my body shivered with fear and at the next moment i just tried to raise the speed of my bike he recalls because of the sound of the accelerator the cubs got afraid and ran into the bushes but the leopard was still on the road, staring at the light of the motorcycle. Umarye without wasting a minute speeded his motorcycle The leopard ran behind me for almost about 150 meters, he pounced on the bike but luckily i escaped and his paw fell on the dicky of the motorcycle partly damaging it. Controlling the balance Umarye ran for his life. Amrut Singh on Saturday kept vigil at night but was not able to catch the wild cat. We are trying our best and are sure to nab it before it harms someone else As per the villagers the Leopard has already killed several of dogs and goats from the village and a calf belonging to one Gajanan Chari has also became victim of the wild cat. Meanwhile there is fear in the minds of the villagers and people have stopped going on the road at night. --- Spread the Christmas Cheer, even when you're not here! Felt that Lobo wana read more on Leopards. or to say He might have just read between the words Really a Leopard cannot run for 150 meters? Then probably LOBO'S LEOPARD/ BEAR would be a LAME. The leopard is capable of running just under 40 miles per hour for brief periods. It can leap more than 20 feet horizontally, and 10 feet vertically. It is also a very adept swimmer. And a link for my dear friend http://www.bigcatrescue.org/leopard.htm anyway thanks for the reply. --- Spread the Christmas Cheer, even when you're not here! TODAY A LEOPARD CAUGHT HERE IN BICHOLIM ESCAPED AND RAN. THE LEOPARD RAN THROUGH THE CROWD (injuring few) INTO THE JUNGLE WITH A REAL GOOD SPEED OR TO SAY JUMPS. He broke the iron rods with a single jump infront of me and about more than 100 people present at the site. TO ADD TO THIS IT WAS MORE THAN 8 SECONDS BUT THE SPEED WAS REALLY FAST just that i was not able to measure it's speed EVEN THIS TIME as i had no SPEEDOMETER. [Goanet] LEOPARD ESCAPES: RESCUE TEAM INJURED
* * * * *http://www.goanet.org* * * * * Stage Play: ON THE HOLY TRAIL Staged By: The Mustard Seed Art Company Where: Kala Academy - Mini Open-air Auditorium When: Dec 20 21, 2007 @ 7pm Read a Review at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066558.html -- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM DEC 21: A three year old leopard caught in the trap laid by Animal Rescue Squad escaped after breaking the iron rod of the cage and injuring three ARS members at Naiginim Bicholim. It may be recalled that since last few days leopard had created havoc in the area by attacking the villagers and killing dogs and cattles. The ARS had laid a trap to catch the leopard at Dhangarwada Naiginim and had kept vigil at night. Today at about 4 am a leopard was traped in the cage and the villagers later informed the ARS about the incident. The ARS chief, Amrut Singh along with his team including Kedar Kanekar and Dinesh Mandrekar swung into action and went to the site. The news of the leopard spread like wild fire and soon there was huge crowd seen in the area. Amrut Singh went with the motive to directly transport the leopard to Bondla. We were just putting a sack over the cage when the leopard became so violent that it swung and jumped in our direction bending the 8 mm iron rod Amrut singh disclosed adding before we could sense what was happening the leopard ran from the crowd into the jungle Probably the cage was of a bit bigger in size and the iron rods were also rusted this made his escape easier and also he was able to jump with a force in the cage Amrut Singh accepts because of the crowd too the leopard got nervous and furious. In a desperate bid to escape the leopard also injured those who came in between them including Amrut Singh. One of his leg fell on my shoulder and thus his nail went deep inside causing a wound. he told. Besides the ARS incharge the members including Kedar Kanekar and Dinesh Mandrekar were also got injured as the leopard's leg fell on their neck and shoulder. All were later treated in the hospital. It is surprising that he managed to flee from a very narrow opening and with a lightening speed Amrut Singh told who was still on the site along with the forest officials laying another trap for the wild cat. --- Spread the Christmas Cheer, even when you're not here!
