[Goanet] Testimony

2021-10-19 Thread Camillo Fernandes
Thank you Roland for pointing out that the post does not relate to my late
mother who I lost her years ago.

Eddie, if you read Camillo?s post carefully, you will realize he is not talking
about his own mother but that of a priest he refers to as Fr Maneesh.

I may add that in life we have to see the negatives as well as the positives.
We should bear in mind that there are bad apples in every profession be it
doctor, police, priest, lawyer, teacher etc. Recently a policeman raped and
murdered an innocent girl Sarah in the UK who was walking all alone Does that
mean all policemen can't be trusted and are murderers?

All I did was just shared the post and I am in no way connected or promoting
it. Readers can make their own conclusions.

Thanks again.

[Goanet] Testimony from Fr. Maneesh of Thamarassery Diocese

2021-10-18 Thread Camillo Fernandes
The Power of The Eucharist - A True Life Testimony from Fr. Maneesh of
Thamarassery Diocese, India…

Fr Maneesh was ordained as a Priest in the Year 2002. His Mother was very
sickly for a long time and often used to get severe stomach pain. Just a few
days before the ordination she became very serious and had to be taken to the
city hospital for treatment. On further investigations, it was found that she
had a huge tumor in her stomach. The doctor advised immediate surgery as only
after surgery they could send it for biopsy to ascertain whether it was
malignant.

However his Mother objected to the surgery saying, “Doctor, the greatest dream
I had, is of my son getting ordained. I have waited all these years and now
finally the day has arrived. I want to attend my son’s ordination. Just two
more weeks for the ordination – after that you can take me for the surgery.”

So on the day of the ordination, the Mother was brought from the city hospital
in an ambulance so that she could attend her son’s ordination. She sat on a
wheelchair and attended the ordination and her son’s first Holy Mass. Her son,
Father Maneesh offered his first Holy Mass for the health of his mother.
Praying for her complete healing after the surgery.

Immediately after the Ordination and First Holy Mass was over she was taken
back to the hospital. Father Maneesh spent his first night as a Priest in the
hospital next to his Mother.

The surgery was scheduled the following day. Just before the surgery she was
taken for the ultrasound and other tests. When the surgeon looked at the
ultrasound report she questioned the nurse, “are you sure you have brought the
right patient for surgery?” “According to this report, there is no tumor in
her.”

Till today Fr Maneesh has both the reports with him – in one report it shows
there is a tumor and the other report it shows no tumor. What happened in
between both those reports is that she attended her son’s Ordination and first
Mass and received the Eucharist.

At that first Eucharist, Fr Maneesh with all the faith in his heart, offered it
for his Mother’s healing. His Mother to prayed with deep trust in the
Eucharistic Lord. And it was the Eucharist that healed his Mother.

Years later, his Mother is perfectly well. She never had to undergo a surgery
for any tumor and is a living testimony of the power of the Eucharist.

When Pope John Paul II was celebrating the 50th Anniversary – the Golden
Jubilee of his Priesthood, he said, “in the span of 50 years of my Priesthood,
what is still the most sacred and precious moment of my life is the celebration
of the Eucharist. Holy Mass is the absolute center of my life.” When John Paul
II was celebrating 50th Anniversary of his Priesthood, he was already a Pope.
He travelled across the world, visited many world leaders. A man deeply loved
by the world. And yet, the most important moment of his life – was the
celebration of the Eucharist!

Bishop Dominic Tang was a Chinese Arch Bishop who was put in prison for 21
years because of his faith. He was in a windowless, dump cell for 21 long
years. After 5 years of solitary confinement, the jailer opened the door to his
cell. For the first time in 5 years Bishop Dominic Tang saw light. First time
in 5 years he saw another human being. The jailer came with some good news. The
good news was that he was being given freedom for a few hours. He was given the
freedom to choose what he would do with those hours.

Think for a moment. If you were put in prison for 5 long years and suddenly you
were given freedom for a few hours and given a choice what would you do? These
days, so many are forced into quarantine. Just 14 days of confinement and by
3rd or 4th day you already hear people say, they are feeling like it is living
hell. Here after 5 years of imprisonment Bishop Tang was asked to choose what
he would do. If you were in his place what would you ask? A shower? Change of
clothes? Would you ask to take a long walk? Or call a close family member? But
Bishop Tang asked only for one thing, “He said, “I would like to celebrate the
Holy Eucharist.”

When we face sickness or our loved ones are unwell, we run from pillar to post
searching for cure, searching for healing. Let us remember the power of the
Eucharist and the love of God poured out for us in the body and blood of Jesus
that brings us healing and deliverance. If we understand and embrace the power
of the Eucharist, we will experience the healing touch of the Lord in every
Holy Mass.

Jesus said, “I Am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” – John 6:35

Let us thank and praise God for the gift of His healing presence in the
Eucharist. Most of us cannot receive the Eucharist Sacramentally at present,
but if we attend the online Holy Mass and unite ourselves to Jesus inviting Him
to come to us Spiritually, we will surely experience His Divine

[Goanet] 2 richest goans

2021-01-31 Thread Camillo Fernandes

2 Richest Catholic Goans
This last week saw the death of Gracias Saldanha, undisputedly the richest
Goan in the world. At the time of his death he was ranked 69th on the
list of richest Indians, with a net worth of 805 million dollars,
according to Forbes. No other Goan figures in the list. He kept a low
profile and not surprisingly there was very little mention of him in the
Goan media at the time of his death.

He was Chairman Emeritus of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, a company
headquartered in Bombay, he founded with his pension fund in the year
1977. The company now has drug manufacturing units in
Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and elsewhere. Glenmark has a presence
in ninety five countries in the world. Saldanha earlier worked
with leading pharmaceutical companies like Abbott Laboratories and E
Merck and was an MSc from Bombay University with a diploma in management
studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.

His Business Profile reads: “Gracias Saldanha is another reclusive
billionaire. This 70-year-old is the owner of Glenmark, one of India’s
top harmacy firms where he has clocked over four decades.
The real difference between him and other pharmacy billionaires is
his quest for drug discovery. He is betting big money not just on generic
drugs, but also ensuring that he can find some new stand-alone products. This
is a
risky and expensive bet and could determine the kind of legacy he leaves
the industry. His other push is acquisitions, with the latest being a
Czech drug firm last year. Very little is known about his personal
interests, but it is believed that he has a fondness for art
and is also a collector of antiques.”

Besides pharmaceuticals Saldanha’s other interest was horse raising, and “Game
to Remember” a horse owned by him won the upper division of the
Confucious Plate for horses five-year old and over in Bangalore the day
he died. Gracias Saldanha made the health of the nation his
priority, and wealth followed. Saldanha hails from Saligao (where
else? The village seems to have an uncanny ability to produce great
men), and he still owns his ancestral house. Glenmark is now headed by
his son Glen Saldanha.

As Saldanha bloomed in Mumbai, the second richest Goan in the
world is flying high in Malayasia. Anthony Francis Fernandes is the fifteenth
richest man in Malayasia with a net worth of 650 million dollars,
according to Forbes. Tony, as he is generally known, is the
son of Dr.Steven Fernandes from Carxeta, Velim, Salcete, who
married a Malacca Kristeng (descendants of Christians from the former
Portuguese colony of Malacca, where the body of St.Francis Xavier was initially
buried after he had died in Sancian, China). Tony studied at Eton and
later graduated from Epsom College. After working for Virgin Atlantic and
Warner Music Group he decided to start a budget/no-frills airline. He
was advised by the Malayasian Government to take over Air Asia, a
heavily indebted and failing airline. Pulling all his resources after
mortgaging his house he took over the airline and as others laughed at him,
turned
it around and today it is the most successful airline in South East
Asia. He is also into hoteliering and has started a hotel chain, Tune
Hotels which like his airlines is a no frills concept, with hotels in
Malayasia and Indonesia.

True to his Goan roots he is into Sports and is President of the
ASEAN Basketball league. He is also into Formula car racing and is
the owner
of Lotus Racing F1 Team. And he has done something that every Goan
should be proud of - he is now the Chairman of Queens Park Rangers
(QPR) holdings having purchased sixty six percent of their shares. He
thus becomes the first Goan to own a football team in the
English Premier League, which is an incentive for Goans to shift
their allegiance from Manchester United to QPR.

Fernandes has been honoured by the King of Malaysia with title Tan
Sri, Dato' Sri and also by the Government of France with the Legion
d'Honneur Order.
In 2011 Tony Fernandes was awarded a CBE or Commander of
the Order of the British Empire "for services to promote commercial and
educational links" between Malaysia and the UK. He has won innumberable awards
including the 2010 Forbes Asia Businessman of the Year.

From the success of these two Goans, it is evident that a Goan has to go out
to get on in life. And, it is equally clear, that one can achieve huge
wealth through honest hard work, something which cannot be said about
the super rich in Goa who have amassed huge wealth in one of
two ways, namely, rampant destruction of the environment through
dubious mining or real estate activity. And these are classified as the
patriotic Goans.

Hi Adolf,

Very happy that you shared your experience on goanet and that your late brother
got more than 4 months extra to live with love, care and treatment.

Honestly I had never heard of Harakhchand Sawla and just got the news anout him
and what he is doing when a friend posted to me about him on whats app. I
thought the least I could do is share this post with my friends and on
goanet. Yes he is doing all this good work for others and will be always
blessed by God. He is an inspiration to all. Whether he and his work is
recognised or not is immaterial as he is doing all this only due his love and
concern for others. To me he is a living saint selflessly helping others like
Mother Theresa.

Last Friday here in Tanzania after hearing what a group of Imams and Bishops

Health for the Poor, Women Children was not about how much money the doctor

[Goanet] Helping cancer patients

2019-10-04 Thread Camillo Fernandes

A must read and share article

A young man in his thirties used to stand on the footpath opposite the famous
Tata Cancer Hospital at Mumbai and stare at the crowd in front- fear plainly
written upon the faces of the patients standing at death's door; their
relatives with equally grim faces running around.. These sights disturbed him
greatly..
Most of the patients were poor people from distant towns. They had no idea whom
to meet, or what to do. They had no money for medicines, not even food. The
young man, heavily depressed, would return home. 'Something should be done for
these people', he would. think. He was haunted by the thought day and night.

At last he found a way-
He rented out his own hotel that was doing good business and raised some money.
From these funds he started a charitable activity right opposite Tata Cancer
Hospital, on the pavement next to Kondaji Building. He himself had no idea that
the activity would continue to flourish even after the passage of 27 years. The
activity consisted of providing free meals for cancer patients and their
relatives. Many people in the vicinity approved of this activity. Beginning
with fifty, the number of beneficiaries soon rose to hundred, two hundred,
three hundred. As the numbers of patients increased, so did the number of
helping hands.

As years rolled by, the activity continued; undeterred by the change of
seasons, come winter, summer or even the dreaded monsoon of Mumbai. The number
of beneficiaries soon reached 700.

Mr Harakhchand Sawla, for that was the name of the pioneer, did not stop here.
He started supplying free medicines for the needy. In fact, he started a
medicine bank, enlisting voluntary services of three doctors and three
pharmacists. A toy banks was opened for kids suffering from cancer. The 'Jeevan
Jyot' trust founded by Mr Sawla now runs more than 60 humanitarian projects.
Sawla, now 57 years old, works with the same vigour. A thousand salutes to his
boundless energy and his monumental contribution!

Moral :- There are people in this country who look upon Sachin Tendulkar as
'God'- for playing 200 test matches in 20 years, few hundred one day matches,
and scoring100 centuries and 30,000 runs. But hardly anyone knows Harakhchand
Sawla, leave alone call him 'God' for feeding free lunches to 10 to 12 lac
cancer patients and their relatives. We owe this discrepancy to our mass media!

Crores of devotees hunting for 'God' in Vithoba temple at Pandharpur, Sai
temple at Shirdi, Balaji temple at Tirupati will never find 'God'. God resides
in our vicinity. But we, like mad men run after 'god-men', styled variously as
Bapu, Maharaj or Baba. All Babas, Maharajs and Bapus become
multi-millionnaires, but our difficulties, agonies and disasters persist
unabated till death. For last 27 years, millions of cancer patients and their
relatives have found 'God', in the form of Harakhchand Sawla.

As you forward interesting jokes and poems instantly, do forward this message.
Mr Sawla deserves his fair share of fame.

[Goanet] To give up or not Portuguese passport

2015-11-11 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Reference below mail, I fully endorse the views of JC. If one holding
a Portuguese passport wants to stay in India he can do so by obtaining
(OCI)Overseas Citizen of India card.

The person avails of the facilities that an Indian has except maybe
no voting rights and no right to buy agricultural land.

I believe the benefits of having a Portuguese passport for a better life
especially as it is the gateway to Europe far outweights being in India.

I believe we Goans thanks to Portuguese are luckly to have this right
to Portuguese citizenship. Non Goans envy us and are willing to pay
huge sums to obtain it. In fact if this facility was given to Indians,
even the so called die hard Indians, would avail of it and leave
India as someone said maybe India would be empty.

Today everyone is looking to better one's life as well as their future
generations which opportunity is given only due to the
Portuguese passport should not be thrown away.

Re: [Goanet] To give up or not Portuguese passport

2015-11-11 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Jose, I agree that if one strives to get qualified in IT, accounting and
medicine then this is surely an advantage or boost for professional jobs and
high salaries. However not having these qualifications should not deter the
person. What is most essential is the person should be willing to work hard
and be ready to take up ANY job especially for a start and not wait to choose
a job that he/she may be qualified in and wants. One can gradually rise up as
years go by. One has to work hard and wait to get his/her choice job which
often may not be easy. So mentally one has to be willing and prepared to take
up any job, more so as the salaries are decent.

Unlike in India any and every job is respected in Europe and so too the
salaries are decent as the
minimum salary is set up and assured. Most Goans who have emigrated are doing
decently well and have bettered theirs as well as their families' economic and
qualify of life. Here no job is looked down upon. Ofcourse if one is a
professional then he would get professional's salary which are high while for
normal jobs the salary may be comparatively less but surely so much better than
in India. Then again the qualify of life cant be compared. Add to this are the
other benefits - i.e. no corruption, pollution, bribes. There is discipline
good medical facilities, etc. There may be disadvantages but the advantages
far outweigh them. As stated earlier we Goans are blessed and privileged to
get the Portuguese citizenship while others are jealous of us and are willing
to use money and all avenues to get European citizenship and even then it is
difficult to get.

I am no expert but just sharing my personal views.

[Goanet] Foods for lowering chlorestrol and BP

2015-08-06 Thread Camillo Fernandes

For lowering Chlorestrol : Eat
Foods Containing Monounsaturated Fats

Although some fat is needed in your diet, all
fats are not considered equal. For instance, monounsaturated fat is
considered one of the healthier fats to eat. According to the American Heart
Association, replacing unhealthy fats with foods containing monounsaturated
fats can help reduce cholesterol levels. Incorporate monounsaturated fats in
your diet by snacking on a handful of nuts or adding avocados to a salad.

Add Foods Containing Phytosterols

There is some evidence that eating foods
with phytosterols may
block the absorption of cholesterol in the blood. Phytosterols are found in
foods such as wheat germ, almonds and Brussels sprouts. In addition,
phytosterols are also available in certain fortified foods and supplements.

Increase
Fiber In Your Diet

Adding fiber to your diet has several
benefits including reducing how much LDL cholesterol is absorbed by the
bloodstream. According to the Mayo Clinic, adding 5 to 10 grams of soluble
fiber to your diet each day can help lower LDL cholesterol. Soluble fiber rich
foods include peas, carrots, citrus fruits and barley.

·
Limit Saturated Fats And Trans Fats

Saturated fat and trans fat are considered the worst
fats to eat because they raise LDL levels. The American Heart Association
recommends limiting calories from fat to about 25 percent, but only 7 percent
can be from saturated fat and 1 percent from trans fat. Saturated fats are
found in certain meats, dairy products, lard and fried foods. Healthier options
include lean beef, poultry without the skin, and low-fat dairy products. Trans
fats are found in chips, fried foods and vegetable shortening.

High cholesterol is one of the main risk
factors for heart disease. The good news is cholesterol is also a controllable
risk factor. Reducing cholesterol levels is essential to lower your risk of
coronary
artery disease, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Finding ways to
lower cholesterol without medication is a great way to take control of your
health.

10 Best Foods For Lowering Blood Pressure

By:
Delialah Falcon

When diagnosed with high
blood pressure, most individuals are given strict orders to improve
their diet and start exercising. When blood pressure is very high, the
doctor may wish to start the patient on blood pressure-lowering
medications. While eating healthy can help lower blood pressure over
time, there are specific foods you can eat that will target high blood
pressure and may quickly reverse the condition. Eating these foods will
have the added benefit of aiding in weight loss, which in turn, will
help lower blood pressure as well.

1. Whole Grains
Whole grains
are grains that are still completely intact and have not undergone a
refining process to remove the bran and germ components. Whole grains
retain the entire grain kernel, making them higher in fiber and other
nutrients than refined grains. One of the many health benefits
associated with whole grains is a decrease in blood pressure. The high
level of potassium and magnesium in whole grains is linked to lower
blood pressure. Whole grains are believed to help with weight control
because they keep you feeling full for a longer period of time. Examples
of whole grain foods that are recommended for lowering blood pressure
are oatmeal or oat bran muffins for breakfast, and healthy sandwiches
made on whole grain bread for lunch.

2. Low-Fat Dairy
Dairy products are high in both calcium and vitamin D.
These two nutrients boost each other’s health benefit and are more
powerful at lowering blood pressure when consumed together. Calcium is
not just recommended for children. Adults still need to maintain
adequate calcium levels, and a calcium deficiency can increase the risk
of developing high blood pressure. Eating dairy products that are low in
fat, such as skim milk or fat-free yogurt, can help lower blood
pressure significantly. To incorporate low-fat dairy into your meals,
add skim milk to whole grain cereals for breakfast. For a healthy snack,
add some fresh fruit and granola to a cup of fat-free yogurt.

3. Spinach
Chock full of magnesium
and folate, spinach is a powerful tool in the fight against high blood
pressure. Not only can magnesium help lower blood pressure, but
consuming it on a regular basis can help maintain healthy blood pressure
and keep the number in check. Spinach is also a great choice for
maintaining a healthy weight because it is so low in calories. Whether
fresh, pre-packaged or frozen, spinach can be added to your diet in a
variety of ways. For breakfast, add some fresh spinach leaves to an egg
white and turkey wrap. Add fresh or packaged spinach leaves to just
about any

To vote is one's right and who to vote is our own discretion. I believe all of

vote there, then there is a penalty of £200 or so. Voting is confidential and
to tell others who one has voted is one 's choice but to tell others and
suggest who to vote is not really right as most of us are literates and
educated. Suggesting who to vote is like that clown Russell Brand advising
people not to vote, then advising to vote Green Party and then changing and
telling people to vote for Labour. Maybe he thinks we are just ignorant and
illiterates and have no mind or knowledge of our own.

[Goanet] Hinduvta's killing hinduism - by Meghna Pant - mirror (mumbai) 20/3/15

2015-03-25 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Mar 20 2015 : Mirror (Mumbai)

BY INVITATION - Hinduvta's killing Hinduism

MEGHNA PANT

Why Hindu extremists must stop the mindless violence against Christians in
India now

In
2010 I visited The Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata to pay homage at
Mother Teresa's tomb. Along the road towards the building were swarms of
 the sick, disabled, disfigured,
the mentally ill, the aged, and the homeless.A leper put his hand out. I
took a coin from my purse. I meant to place it on his outstretched
palm. But on leaning over, I cringed. I try to be kind, each day a
little more, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't touch
him. So I tossed the coin in his direction, avoided his reddened eyes
and quickly walked away in shame.

I entered the Mother Teresa's sober tomb and my shame worsened. While I
shuddered at the thought of touching a leper, she had embraced those
with the disease. She had given shelter to hundreds of destitute while
living in austerity that was in deep disproportion
to her fame. Only a person in possession of a great sense of service to
others could have spent her entire life like this.

Five years later, RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat claimed that the primary
objective of Mother Theresa's missionary work was conversion.

Three weeks later a 71-year-old nun of a convent school was gang-raped
near Kolkata by six men. It was one of India's most shameful moments.

I have spent a big portion of my life around Christians. My
school, Villa Theresa, was Roman Catholic and St Xavier's, where I went
for college, was run by Indian Jesuits. We sang `Jana Gana Mana' in the
morning, followed by The Lord's Prayer. We went to the
school church and sat on the pews listening in rapture to stories about
Saint Francis of Assisi and Shivaji. We prayed to Lord Jesus and we
prayed to Lord Shiva. Diversity was a way of life, not an effort at
brainwashing or conversion.

The Christians in India are a small minority. At 2.5 per cent of the
total population, they are significantly smaller than other minorities,
like say the Muslims who are 14 per cent of our populace. And even in
those small numbers, they have given India its
 most prized asset: Education.

And what is India giving back to them?

In recent months many acts of violence have taken place against the
Christian community, including burning of churches, re-conversion of
Christians to Hinduism by force, distribution of threatening literature,
and defacement of Bibles. This week, around the
same time as the nun was raped, a cross at a church in Haryana was
forcibly replaced with a Hanuman idol.

The ongoing violence is a matter of great national shame, especially in
our country that has a history of tolerance.Worse still, most of it is
politically motivated. According to media reports, much of it stems from
fringe elements of Hindu organisations such
as the Bajrang Dal, Vishva Hindu Parishad, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh. They're doing this to avenge Christian missionaries and their
alleged `aggressive conversion drives' which they think have forced good
 Hindus to covert.

Forced
conversions? Look at our population figure. Does it look like we're
running out of Hindus? Read our law. Article 25 of the Indian
Constitution guarantees freedom of religion.
Conversion is an individual choice. If a person wants to convert their
religion, their shoes, their refrigerator, it is their choice. It is not
the business of the state to check whether someone is spreading their
mat or crossing their heart or ringing a bell.

Yet, since December 2014 the VHP and RSS have been conducting
re-conversion ceremonies of Christians to Hindus for their ghar wapsi
(homecomings) campaign, and attacks on Christian institutions are
becoming more frequent.

Instead of leading by violence, the first call of the weak-minded, why
don't fanatics lead by example? Make Hinduism a religion that attracts
those in need of faith.Instead of disparaging dead saints and
denigrating charitable work for the poor, look after
your people by providing basic education, decent living conditions and
selfless service to those in need.

These extremists are emboldened because they expect Christians not to
react. After all, Christians in India are generally viewed as a
peace-loving community. Christians don't regularly attack our temples,
bomb our malls or rape our women.

But against the power of evil, even the good fold into a Faustian pact.
If such attacks continue then at some point the Christian community
will react. At some point they will snap. Julio Ribeiro tells us that
they're already feeling under siege. So what will
they do? It will be sad if Christians also become the bad guys. It will
be shocking if Christians also start seeing violence as necessary in
the name of a higher good. It will be even worse if they take back what
they've given so generously to

Until this week, Alan Barnes and Katie Cutler had never met, never heard of
each other and, on the face of it, had absolutely nothing in common.
Alan is a tiny, toy-like man, weighing 6st and standing at just 4ft 6in tall.
He has terrible eyesight, loves maths, walking, going to church, dancing,
young people, Radio 4 and making friends and listening to their problems.

Charity Fundraiser Katie Cutler raised more than £300,000 for Alan Barnes who

Vulnerable pensioner Alan Barnes was victim of cowardly attack

His late mother Winnie, who contracted German measles when she was pregnant,
was told he wouldn't live past the age of nine. Alan is now 67 and going
 strong.
Katie, meanwhile, is a 21-year-old mum. She has 15 GCSEs, a set of very
lustrous hair extensions, runs her own beauty salon and dreams of being a
 manicurist to the stars.
Over the past week she has been called 'the Angel of the North', 'Alan's
fairy godmother' and an online campaign is calling for her to be awarded an
 OBE.
Because Katie also has an extraordinarily big heart — even if that's not
quite how she's put it herself.

from her home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, she took action immediately —

As anyone who has opened a newspaper, watched television or listened to the
radio in the past week will know, that's when things went a little crazy.
Because Katie's ambitious £500 target was achieved in less than an hour.
By last Saturday, she'd raised more than £50,000. By Sunday more than 21,000
people from all around the world had donated £281,122. It wasn't just money.
One kind person promised a kitchen for Alan's new home. Others offered a
 bathroom and a conservatory.
Removal companies, cleaning companies and security firms all offered services
free of charge. Alan's also been inundated with offers of free groceries,
 free meals and free drinks.
By Wednesday morning, with the fund tipping £330,145 and offers of gifts and
services coming out of their ears, Katie, Alan and his astonished family
thanked everyone very much indeed, then asked them to stop giving and closed
 the fund.
'It's all been a bit crazy,' adds Katie, clearly rather shaken by the whole
 turn of events.
'I thought this sort of thing only happened to other people — to famous
people, or when there'd been a disaster,' adds Alan, 'It's very kind, but
it's more than enough. So I'd like to pass some of it on to other people who
 might need it more.'
Today, Alan (in a hand-knitted tank top and right arm still in a sling) and
Katie are sitting on her brown corduroy sofa in the cottage in Gateshead she
shares with her boyfriend John, 28, and their daughter Gracie, nearly three.
They have been holding hands since Alan arrived.
'People say she's my fairy godmother. I don't know what she is, but she's
absolutely magic,' he says, beaming. 'It's as if all the good has somehow

Are Sweet Potatoes Good for Diabetics?

by Aglaee Jacob

Sweet potatoes are a better option than white potatoes for diabetics.

Being diagnosed with diabetes often means eliminating or
limiting many of your favorite foods. Foods with a high carbohydrate
content, such as many desserts, large amounts of pasta, breads, sugary
breakfast cereals and soft drinks, can make your blood sugar levels
skyrocket within a few minutes after eating. Over time, this can damage
your small blood vessels and lead to heart diseases, blindness, kidney
diseases, stroke and even amputations. Diabetics can include a variety
of carbohydrates that are digested more slowly, such as the ones found
in non-starchy vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and sweet potatoes to stay
 healthier with their condition.

White potatoes, whether you have them mashed, baked, as
french fries or potato chips, have a high glycemic index, which means
that their carbohydrates are quickly turned into sugar, which elevates
your blood sugar levels after your meal. The glycemic index of sweet
potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according
to a 2002 article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood
sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes.

Carbohydrate Content
A medium sweet potato contains 26 grams of carbohydrates, of
which 3.8 grams are dietary fiber, while a cup of mashed sweet potatoes
has 58 grams of carbohydrates and 8.2 grams of fiber. Fiber, which is
part of the total carbohydrate content, does not elevate blood sugar
levels and can be subtracted from the total grams of carbohydrates to
have a better idea of the blood sugar-rising potential of a food. In the
case of a baked sweet potatoes, subtract the 3.8 grams of fiber from
the 26 grams of carbohydrates to determine that they contain only 22.2
grams of available carbs per serving. With mashed, sweet potatoes,
subtracting the 8.2 grams of fiber from the 58 grams of carbs gives you a
total of 49.8 grams of available carbs per cup. If you are carb
counting to control your diabetes, use available carbs to be more
accurate.

l.

Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics.
Bake them in the oven until they are soft and serve them with a little
bit of sour cream, plain yogurt or butter for extra flavor. Sweet potato
fries are also a healthy alternative to take-out or frozen french
fries. Cut your sweet potatoes into fries, drizzle them with olive oil,
sprinkle them with salt and bake them in the oven until cooked. Mashed
sweet potatoes with cream and butter also make a tasty side dish that,
despite its sweet taste, won't be a problem for your blood sugar levels
if consumed in controlled amount. You can even reduce the carb content
of your mashed sweet potatoes by mixing them with equal amounts of
mashed cauliflower. Make sure you accompany your sweet potatoes with a
bit of fat from butter, olive oil or avocado and protein from meat,
poultry or fish to get a balanced meal.

[Goanet] Fancy a slice of lemon in your water? - dailymail.co.uk

Fancy a slice of lemon in your water? You won't
after reading this: From germ encrusted menus to what's under the
waiter's nails, a top biologist on the hidden horrors in your restaurant
A pricey menu is no defence against poor restaurant hygieneYou need to inspect
the premises, your waiter and your tableLearn the signs to spot to avoid
getting food poisoning
The
prices on the menu are reassuringly expensive, the decor immaculate and
the food delicious. But you can still go home with a nasty stomach bug. There
are a million cases of food poisoning each year in the UK - and 60 per cent
happen away from the home.A
pricey menu is no defence against poor restaurant hygiene - as
highlighted recently when London's Chiltern Firehouse, frequented by the
likes of David Cameron, Kate Moss and David Beckham, received a hygiene
rating of two out of five. Here, Dr Carl Edwards, a microbiologist at
Nottingham University, reveals how to keep safe when eating out...

A pricey menu doesn't guarantee
cleanliness: London's Chiltern Firehouse, frequented by the stars,
received a hygiene rating of two out of fiveSay no to ice and a slice

No thanks: Around 70 per cent of lemons in restaurant drinks show signs of
microbe growthYou
may think there's nothing more refreshing than a jug of water with ice
and lemon. But beware - the contents are probably bacteria-ridden.Around
70 per cent of lemons in restaurant drinks show signs of microbe
growth, according to a study in the Journal of Environmental Health
earlier this year. The bugs include faecal bacteria and E.coli (which
can cause serious food poisoning) and the yeast candida, which causes
thrush.This
is because chefs don't tend to use gloves for most kitchen activities,
including cutting lemons. And lemons aren't peeled or cooked, which
kills off many bugs.On
top of that, the jugs may not be washed all day, despite being used by a
lot of people - and stagnant water is a great incubator for bacteria
and parasites.The
ice can be a hazard, too. Tests last year found that ice cubes from
branches of McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Starbucks, Cafe Rouge and
Nando's all had more bacteria in them than samples of water taken from
the lavatory bowls.This
may be because there are rotas for the regular cleaning of toilets,
while ice machines can be left for ages in between cleans, as most
people assume they are too cold for germs to survive. In fact, ice
preserves most organisms - including E.coli.Choose bottled water or a clean jug
with fresh tap water - with no lemon or ice.

Babies tasting lemons for the first time

Don't trust a mucky menuPeer
carefully at the menu - not to see if you fancy the chicken dish but to
find out if the menu itself is dirty. Quite often, it'll have a plush
cover with a velvety finish - which is extremely difficult to clean.Cheaper
vinyl covers and laminated menus are much easier to wipe down - and
will show up the stains and grease spots if they haven't been cleaned.
If they're sticky or tatty, be wary.

With paper
and card, it's even more straightforward. Take one look - if it's
soiled, consider leaving. After all, if the restaurant is dishing out
dirty menus, what on earth is going on in the areas you can't see?Analyse your
waiterIs your waiter or waitress's uniform clean? How about their hands? If
they have a tea towel over one shoulder, is it spotless? When
it comes to jewellery, there are various guidelines for serving staff -
a wedding band and very simple ear piercing are all that should be
allowed. You wouldn't want to see uncovered jewellery or lip and nose
piercings, because these could fall into the food.

+4
Nevermind service with a smile: Check your server's uniform is clean and
that their nails are short and not fakeIf you see a little blue plaster over a
ring or ear stud, that's an indication the establishment takes hygiene
seriously.Serving
staff with long hair should have it tied back so none of it can fall
into your dish. Long nails are a no-no, too, as they're impossible to
keep clean.A
study found that nails longer than 3mm carry more germs under them than
shorter nails. These commonly include klebsiella - which can cause
pneumonia and urinary-tract infections - and candida parapsilosis, which
 can cause blood-stream infections.If
the nails are fake, they can easily fall into food. And if you see
staff go into the toilets while wearing their apron, head for the door.Think of
all the bacteria from the loos that they'll be taking back with them into the
kitchen.Scout the premisesIf
you can peer into the kitchen, all the better. You should see
hand-washing facilities

Coconut
water has become Britain’s fastest-growing soft drink. It’s made by
extracting the milky fluid inside unripe green coconuts (this turns to
milk when the coconut is ripe) and can be drunk as is or flavoured with
sugar and fruit juice.The
drink, which tastes like slightly sweet, slightly salty water, is low
in calories and said to be high in minerals such as potassium and
magnesium, which are vital for muscle movement, nerve transmission and
brain operation. These minerals are depleted after exercise, so coconut water is
often sold as a post-workout drink.

Coconut water has become Britain's fastest-growing soft drink with 12.5
million bottles sold in the last yearSales
are up 114 per cent since last year, according to internet shopping
experts mySupermarket, and there are 36 brands available in Britain. The
market leader, Vita Coco, has grown 120 per cent over the past 12
months, with growth doubling every year since it launched four years
ago.Last year, 12.5 million Vita Coco drinks were sold in Britain. The
company was launched by two childhood friends from New York. They had
met two Brazilian women in a bar, who told them they really missed
drinking coconut water, which is hugely popular in Rio de Janeiro.Soon
afterwards, the pair launched Vita Coco, which is now available in 75,000
stores in 13 countries around the world.

While its
popularity continues to grow, critics say that the benefits are hugely
hyped, as the drink is 95 per cent water. They also say it is only
slightly more effective than water as a drink after exercise, with many
sports drinks higher in minerals. However, with only a small amount of
sugar, it is lower in calories than most sports drinks.
So which should you try? There are a range of different coconut water's now
available on the market Coke
and Pepsi each own coconut water brands — Zico and O.N.E, respectively —
after jumping on the bandwagon on the back of Vita Coco’s huge success. In the
past year, sales of coconut water rocketed by 71 per cent at Ocado and 55 per
cent at Tesco.Matt
Clark, Tesco’s world foods buying manager, says: ‘We started selling
coconut water in 2008 when it was still very much a niche drink.‘But
in the past year sales have soared. Demand tends to rise whenever a
celebrity such as Rihanna is photographed holding a coconut drink.’
MS has launched its own range this year, at £2.99 a litre, and
their most popular variety, the unflavoured MS coconut water, has
been selling 17,000 litres a week during the summer. They use coconut water from
Indonesia and spent a year perfecting their recipes.Alex
Beckett, of retail analysts Mintel, says: ‘Coconut water has been a
runaway success story in the UK since 2010. Heightened awareness of the
nutritional benefits of coconut water has driven interest in this
drink.’

Pope Francis issues top 10 tips for happiness – including don’t try to convert
other peopleAdam Withnall,The Independent

Jul 31, 2014, 06.39 PM
IST
AASpeaking
in a very frank interview published in the Argentine weekly Viva, the
Pope drew on his personal experiences to come up with his own lifestyle
guide with a humble, anti-consumerist twist.Turn off the TV, calm down and
stop trying to convert people to your religion.

These are among the top 10 pieces of advice issued by Pope Francis this
week as part of his recipe for a happy, more fulfilled life.

Speaking in a very frank interview published in the Argentine weekly
Viva, the Pope drew on his personal experiences to come up with his
own lifestyle guide with a humble, anti-consumerist twist.

 The
highlights include a call to families to turn off the TV when they sit
down to eat because, even though television is useful for keeping up
with the news, having it on during mealtime doesn't let you communicate
with each other, according to a Catholic News Service translation of
the interview.

And Francis said people will also be much
happier when they stop trying too hard to bring others round to their
way of thinking - including on religion. He said the church grows by
attraction, not proselytising, and added that the best way to get
through to anyone was with dialogue, starting with his or her own
identity.

May each family rediscover family prayer, which helps to bring about mutual
understanding and forgiveness.
 — Pope Francis (@Pontifex) July 31, 2014

The number one piece of advice actually came in the form of a slightly
cliched Italian expression, roughly translated as: Move forward and let
others do the same. The equivalent in English would be live and let
live.

For the rest of the top 10 — and how the principles have
been applied by some famously happy people — click through the gallery
(or read on below).

Pope Francis arrives on the popemobile at the Square in front of the Royal
Palace of Caserta on July 26, 2014 in Caserta, Italy

 Pope Francis's secrets to happiness

 1. Live and let live. Everyone should be guided by this principle, he
said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, Move
forward and let others do the same.

 2. Be giving of yourself
to others. People need to be open and generous toward others, he said,
because if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming
egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.

 3. Proceed
calmly in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature,
used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the
protagonist — gaucho Don Segundo Sombra — looks back on how he lived
his life.

 4. A healthy sense of leisure. The Pope said
consumerism has brought us anxiety, and told parents to set aside time
to play with their children and turn of the TV when they sit down to
eat.

 5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sundays off because Sunday
is for family, he said.

 6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. We
need to be creative with young people. If they have no opportunities
they will get into drugs and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said.

 7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation is one
of the biggest challenges we have, he said. I think a question that
we're not asking ourselves is: 'Isn't humanity committing suicide with
this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?'

 8. Stop
being negative. Needing to talk badly about others indicates low
self-esteem. That means, 'I feel so low that instead of picking myself
up I have to cut others down,' the Pope said. Letting go of negative
things quickly is healthy.

 9. Don't proselytise; respect
others' beliefs. We can inspire others through witness so that one
grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious
proselytism, which paralyses: 'I am talking with you in order to
persuade you,' No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own
identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytising, the Pope
said.

 10. Work for peace. We are living in a time of many
wars, he said, and the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes
gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is
always proactive and dynamic.

Don't bin banana skins - eat them for pudding! The healthiest bits
of fruit and veg are often thrown out. Chef Aldo Zilli reveals how they
can be tasty treats
Banana peel can be added to cheesecakeMelon seeds can be roasted for a tasty
snackPineapple core is full of goodness
By
Mandy Francis

From banana peel to melon pips
and onion skins - believe it or not, some of the most powerful nutrients
in our fruit and veg are in the bits we throw away.
'Many fruits and vegetables have skins and leaves that are more colourful than
the flesh,' says dietician Dr Sarah Schenker.
'This
is a good indication they contain high levels of powerful compounds
such as protective antioxidants. Peel, stalks, leaves and cores are
packed with dietary fibre, too.'
Scroll down for video

Lovely leftovers: Chef Aldo Zili makes some meal suggestions using some
unlikely ingredients
But how can you make watermelon rind and broccoli stalks tasty?
We
asked Dr Schenker to reveal the pips and peelings we should be eating,
and then challenged chef Aldo Zilli to come up with ways to make them
taste delicious.

Mood-enhancing: Banana peel can beat depression
BANANA PEEL CHEESECAKEIt may look tough and leathery, but you can eat banana
skin, provided you cook it or put it through a juicer.
In
a recent study, researchers found banana peel extract to be rich in
seratonin, a mood-balancing chemical that has the potential to ease
depression.
It was also
shown to be rich in lutein, a protective antioxidant vitamin that helps
to protect eye cells from ultra-violet light - the leading cause of
cataracts.
ALDO'S TIPS: Remove
the tough top and bottom ends of the skins, then soak for several days
to soften them. Change the soaking water each day.
Once the water runs clear, boil, strain and puree the skins to add a sweet,
date-like flavour to cakes and cheesecake.
To
make banana peel cheesecake, mix 175 g crushed digestive biscuits and
75 g melted butter and press into the base of a cake tin before placing
in the fridge to firm up.
Next
whisk together 700 g ricotta, three eggs, 140 ml double cream, 75 g
caster sugar, 3 tbsp plain flour and the zest of an orange.
Carefully
fold in 3 tbsp banana skin puree, then pour over the biscuit base. Bake
for one hour 25 minutes at 150c/300f/Gas 2. Allow to cool before
removing from tin. Top banana!

MELON SEED SNACKS'Just like sunflower and pumpkin seeds, melon seeds offer a
concentrated source of useful nutrients,' says Dr Schenker.
'They
are rich in minerals such as bone-building calcium and monounsaturated
fats, which are important for heart health, plus dietary fibre.'
ALDO'S TIPS: Rinse
and rub melon seeds in a fine sieve to remove all the flesh. Allow the
seeds to dry on a clean tea towel and then toast them in a frying pan or
roast them in a hot oven with a little spritz of oil.
Turn the seeds occasionally. When they are browned all over, sprinkle with a
dash of salt.
Once cool, eat as a nutritious snack or sprinkle over salads for added crunch.
ONION SKIN STEWThe
outer, papery skin on onions may be unpalatable, but it contains
exceptionally high levels of protective antioxidants - much higher than
the levels found in the onion itself.
'Onion skin is especially rich in a flavonoid called quercetin,' says Dr
Schenker.
'This
plant pigment has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that
some research suggests may help to reduce blood pressure and the
formation of arterial plaque - the deposit that furs up arteries.'
ALDO'S TIPS: Use
onion skin in stocks to add extra flavour. As quercetin is water
soluble, you get all the health benefits too. Rip the onion skin into
large pieces and gently simmer in stocks, soups and stews for extra
flavour and colour.
Don't forget to fish out the onion skin before serving!
WATERMELON RIND SMOOTHIESRresearchers have found that the white area of
watermelon rind between the green skin and pink flesh is rich in citrulline.
'This
amino acid is recognised as being vital for the healthy dilation of
blood vessels and circulation and plays an important role in removing
toxins from the body,' says Dr Schenker.
ALDO'S TIPS: Use
a vegetable peeler to remove the green skin from the rind, then put the
white section in a blender with a squeeze of lime and plenty of chilled
 pink watermelon flesh.
Blitz everything together to make a nutritious smoothie that the whole family
will love.
Another
option is to slice the white rind thinly, then cook in a heavy based
saucepan with several tablespoons of sugar and a knob of butter until
the sugar starts to bubble, thicken and turn brown.
Make sure you don’t allow the sugar or fruit to burn.
Serve your sticky, sweet watermelon rinds with vanilla ice cream. Gorgeous!

[Goanet] Other uses of MIcrowave - dailymail.co.uk

2014-06-18 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Microwaves have come a long way since they were invented 50 years ago.
Heston Blumenthal recently launched a £295 ‘intelligent’ microwave oven that
works out for itself how long food needs.
But are you aware of some of the more unusual tricks that any microwave —
intelligent or otherwise — can perform?

Microwaves - they're not just useful when it comes to heating up your dinner

DRY YOUR TIGHTS
Need
a clean pair of tights in a hurry? Hand wash a pair of tights, wring
them out — then place the damp tights on a layer of paper towels in your
microwave. ‘A quick blitz on a high setting for a maximum of 30 seconds
(stop the oven and check the tights every ten seconds) will leave them
bone dry and ready to wear,’ says home economist Jacqueline Mariani, who
has been teaching people to use microwaves for more than 30 years.

STERILISE SOIL
Potting seedlings into disease-free, sterilised soil will significantly
improve your young plants’ chances of survival.
You
can buy bags of ready-sterilised soil from any garden centre — but,
according to the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute, you can
also make your own in a few minutes in your micro- wave.
Spread
400g of loose soil out on a flat, non-metal dish. Heat the soil on a
high temperature in your microwave for 90 seconds until it starts to
steam, then allow to cool thoroughly before use.
GET MORE JUICE
Microwave
your citrus fruits for 20 seconds on a high setting before you squeeze
them. ‘A quick blast will soften the cellular walls of the fruit —
allowing you to extract every last bit of juice from oranges, lemons,
limes and grapefruit,’ says Jacqueline.
DID YOU KNOW?
The first commerical microwave was 1.8m (5ft) tall, 340kg and cost the
equivalent of £30,000 today

RESTORE HONEY
Got
a jar of runny honey that’s turned hard and grainy? A gentle warm in
the microwave will make it liquid again, says Chris Westgate, a food
expert and bee keeper at Vale House Country Skills And Cookery School in
 Bath.
‘Providing
the container your honey is in is microwave safe, take the lid off and
heat it gently on the defrost setting for 30 seconds at a time,’ he
adds. ‘Stir the honey after each 30-second blitz and stop when it has
turned runny again.’
WARM PLATES FAST
Place
two or three plates at a time in the microwave — flicking a little
water over the surface of each before you stack them. Thirty seconds on a
high setting should be enough to give you lovely warm crockery.

+3

DRY HERBS
Drying fresh herbs in a microwave is a quick and easy process that preserves
colour and flavour really well.
For
best results, microwave just a few sprigs or small handful of leaves at
a time. Place your herbs, well spaced and in a single layer on a double
layer of paper kitchen towels on a microwavable plate.
(Avoid
using recycled kitchen roll in microwaves as it may contain tiny
particles of metal, which can ignite the paper during the cooking
process.)
Cover
them with another sheet of kitchen roll. Microwave in cautious 20
second intervals at first, taking the herbs out after each blitz,
allowing them to cool then checking how dry they are.
The drying process can take anything from 40 seconds to three minutes on a high
setting.
Once your herbs are crisp and dry, crumble them and keep in a clean airtight
jar.
This process also works well if you want to dry flower petals for confetti,
potpourri or scented drawer sachets.
REVIVE MASCARA
To
revive a dry, clumpy mascara, remove the lid and brush, then place the
open tube in your microwave next to a cup of water for humidity, says
Jacqueline. ‘Microwave on high for five seconds to loosen up the
contents and get a couple more weeks of luscious lashes,’ she says.

+3

SOFTEN HARD SUGAR
Don’t throw away brown sugar that has turned into one big, hard lump, advises
Chris Westgate.
‘Place
it in a microwave-proof bowl with a damp paper towel over the top, then
microwave on high at 15-second intervals,’ he says. ‘It won’t take long
for the sugar to become loose and soft again.’
cake-in-a-mugCAKE-IN-A-MUGFinally,
our favourite microwave trick. Place 2oz softened butter, 2oz caster
sugar, one large beaten egg, 2oz self raising flour and a couple of
drops of vanilla extract into the largest mug you have, and mix with a
fork until smooth.
If
the mug is more than half full, split the mixture between two mugs and
make two cakes. Microwave the cakes separately for 1½ to 2½ minutes
until risen and firm (test the top of your cake for firmness after one
minute. If it’s not ready, carry on microwaving at 20-second intervals.
Top with icing, custard or ice cream.Never
put metal in a microwave. Check containers are microwave safe. If
heating something new, do it in short blasts, checking the temperature
as you go. Take care when removing items — they may be very hot.

Low cost carrier AirAsia India today said its maiden daily flight
will be on the Bangalore-Goa route, with a price tag of Rs 990 including
taxes. The airline will open the bookings this evening.

The first A320 flight is scheduled to leave Bangalore on June 12
afternoon, AirAsia India CEO Mittu Chandilya told reporters here.

AirAsia India, a joint venture between Malaysian carrier AirAsia,
Tata Sons, and Arun Bhatia’s Telestra Tradeplace, was granted flying
licence by aviation regulator DGCA earlier this month after 9-month-long
 wait and various legal hurdles.

“AirAsia will be opening up the bookings this evening. By 9.30 pm our
fares will be up there in our website. Our first route will be from
Bangalore to Goa and Goa to Bangalore. We are very excited about that,”
Chandilya said.

“Our collective goal is that every Indian should have an opportunity to fly. We
have our plane parked here already, he said.

Responding to a query, Chandilya said that by end of this financial
year, the airline hopes to connect 10 cities, with 10 aircraft.
to help us personalise your reading experience.
“We have about 300 people right now. Basically, we have about 80
people for one aircraft,” he said to a query on how many people the
airline would be adding this financial year.

AirAsia India plans to have a 10-aircraft fleet within a year of
start of operations and these planes would be drawn from A-320 family of
aircraft ordered by the AirAsia Group. On March 22, AirAsia India
received its first A-320 aircraft configured in an all-economy layout
with 180 seats.

“We will be launching flights in about two to three months. We would
soon be filing our flight schedules for approval from the DGCA, and
after the approval we would seek slots at the different airports,”
Chandilya had said after getting flying license on May 7.

The new airline was also looking at destinations including Trichy, Kochi and
Kolkata, he said.

Asked about the fares, he had said they will about 35 per cent lower than the
current market rate.

Earlier this year, Fernandes had said that AirAsia India would offer
“dramatically low” airfares and would take air travel to masses in the
country.

Known to have revolutionised the airline market in Malaysia and some
other Asian countries through low-cost airfares, AirAsia chief had said
that the strategy for India would be to offer “cheapest” possible
tickets.

“We have to be the cheapest and stimulate the market. We have to
allow the common man to fly. That is my message to India that flying is
not only for the rich,” he said.

High taxes and other costs have been a major reason for AirAsia
thinking to start its domestic flights in India with Chennai as a hub
and not the bigger centres like Delhi and Mumbai.

AirAsia is however hopeful that

[Goanet] Wearing contact lenses all day can destroy your eyesight - dailymail.co.uk

How wearing contact lenses all day can DESTROY your eyesight: Read one woman's
cautionary tale

Aimee McWilliams was in serious danger of losing her sight as her eyes were
starved of oxygen

After
finally getting round to having a routine check-up for her contact
lenses, Aimee McWilliams assumed it would be merely a formality.Having
worn contacts since the age of 14, the 33-year-old fashion designer
from London had never experienced any problems with them. The
general advice is to avoid wearing contacts for more than eight hours a
day. However Aimee, like many people, had been wearing them for much
longer - in her case, for more than 14 hours every day.

This had
slowly been starving her eyes of oxygen; while the damage wasn't
apparent to the naked eye, it was spotted when the optometrist used a
special microscope. Aimee was shocked to learn that she was in serious
danger of losing her sight.'I was horrified,' recalls Aimee, from
London. 'I'd always worn my lenses from 7 am until nearly midnight.
Nobody had told me that I was jeopardising my sight by wearing them for
so long, though I suppose I just said I used them daily.
'What
frightened me even more was that there had been no signs anything was
wrong - my eyes looked the same. And I'd delayed my annual check-up by
several weeks because I was so busy and I didn't think I really needed
one.'Around 3.7 million people in Britain wear contact lenses. But
many don't appreciate how meticulous you need to be about using them,
says Hosam Kasaby, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Southend
University Hospital and BMI Southend Hospital. One of the risks is
corneal neovascularisation, the condition Aimee had. As Mr Kasaby
explains: 'The cornea - the clear outer layer at the front of the
eyeball - is the only part of the body that gets its oxygen supply
directly from the air rather than from the blood.'But a contact lens acts as a
barrier to that oxygen supply, so extensive wear can potentially starve the
cornea of oxygen.

'The
body compensates for this by growing new blood vessels over the cornea
to provide an oxygen supply, or corneal neovascularisation.
'Left
unchecked, the eye can become covered with blood vessels, and turn the
cornea opaque. In rare cases it can threaten sight.'The problem is
the condition can build up over several years - it's only when it gets
to an advanced stage that contacts wearers become aware of a problem, as
that's when it will cause red, irritated eyes, by which time it may be
too late.

The general advice is to avoid wearing contacts for more than eight hours a day

Stopping wearing the lenses can cause the new blood
vessels to collapse, though in severe cases, when there is excessive
blood vessel growth, even if they collapse, they can cause scarring.Corneal
neovascularisation may be more common with standard soft lenses, which
are made of water-containing plastic. The other main type of lens, gas
permeable, while less flexible, allows in more oxygen, says Robert
Glass, a Manchester-based optometrist.'There are also newer types of
soft lenses, known as silicone hydrogels, which allow more oxygen to
pass through to the cornea than previous soft lens materials, making
them healthier,' he says.
There are lenses licensed for use during
sleep, which are permeable enough to ensure there is minimal risk of
corneal neovascularisation. But you should be assessed by an optometrist
 before using these.
'I'd
always worn my lenses from 7 am until nearly midnight. Nobody had told
me that I was jeopardising my sight by wearing them for so long'
It's not only corneal neovascularisation that's the problem with wearing
contacts for too long.
Lucia
Paovesana, 27, says her big, round blue eyes, which she once considered
her best feature, have been ruined through wearing contact lenses for
more than ten hours a day, as the whites of her eyes are now often red
and sore. She's worn contacts since she was 14, then four years ago
she began suffering eye infections every few months. 'If I was awake I'd
wear lenses,' says Lucia, who lives in Tamworth and works in a bar.
'But every few months my eyes would become red and painful. I'd leave
the lenses for a couple of days and they'd settle down. But the cycle
would repeat itself.'Eventually, she saw her optician, who
immediately referred her to a specialist at Ashfurlong Medical Centre in
Sutton Coldfield, where she was diagnosed with blepharitis -
inflammation of the eyelids - aggravated by wearing her contacts for too
long every day. Blepharitis causes reddening of the whites of the eye
as the inflamed lids scratch the surface. People wearing contacts are at
much higher risk of blephar-itis, as the eye is more likely to be dry
and prone to irritation.
Blepharitis cannot usually be cured, but
the symptoms can be

Everyone over the
age of 40 should take cholesterol-busting statins, an eminent heart surgeon
says.

Professor Sir Magdi
Yacoub, who has carried out more heart transplants than anyone else, said the
benefits of taking the controversial drugs ‘massively’ outweigh the risks and
to not make them more widely available is ‘lunacy’.

Sir Magdi, professor
of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London, also believes statins
should be available without a prescription.

Statins are the
most-widely prescribed drugs in Britain
and are credited with saving thousands of lives a year by preventing heart
attacks and strokes.

But a row is raging
about their side-effects.

A report published
in the British Medical Journal said the cholesterol-lowering drugs, taken by
eight million Britons, cause side-effects such as liver and kidney disease and
diabetes in one in five patients.

Parts of the article
were withdrawn last week, following repeated criticism from an Oxford
University academic that the risks had been exaggerated up to 20-fold.

Sir Rory Collins
said the figure is one in 100 and described the published claims as a ‘huge
error’ that will ‘cause unnecessary deaths’ by discouraging patients from
taking the medicine.

Now, Sir Magdi has
said that stopping taking the drugs would be disastrous.

He told BBC Radio
4’s Today programme on Saturday that he found the row very upsetting, adding:
‘It is almost certainly going to result in people not taking statins and that
is a major worry to many of us because the evidence is overwhelming, the lower
the cholesterol, the healthier you are and the longer you will live.

‘Not only that, it prevents heart attacks and
strokes but also cancer, dementia. So not to take statins is a disaster.’

He then called for
the drugs to be easier to access – and for more people to take them.

Sir Magdi said he believed statins should be
available from chemists without prescription and that everyone over 40 should
take them.

He said that
side-effects pale into insignificance when compared with the benefits and ‘not
to make use of what we have is lunacy’.

Statins are the most-widely prescribed drugs in Britain
and are credited with saving thousands of lives a year by preventing heart
attacks and stroke

Sir Magdi said: ‘The
drug has been around for 25 years or so and we do know the
long-term results and exactly what it does biochemically.

‘We know exactly how
to monitor any complications which are very minor compared to the benefits so I
don’t see the problem.’

Currently, the
prescription of statins is based on health, rather than age, with anyone judged
to have a 20 per cent risk of a heart attack in the next decade offered them.

But millions more
could soon take the pills, as the cut-off is expected to be lowered to 10 per
cent.

Some doctors have questioned the mass-medication
of essentially healthy people and say there are better ways of spending NHS
money.

Dr Mike Knapton, a
GP and associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘I am
not sure we are yet in a position where everybody over a certain age should be
prescribed a statin.

‘Even if in theory it would have public health
benefits it could turn life into a disease.
