SPEAKER: Clinton Vaz - November 16, 2007 - 5:30pm VISIT: http://tinyurl.com/222757 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ World Under 8 Girls Champion and Asian Under 8 Girls Champion Ivana Furtado of Goa will be defending her coveted title at the World Youth Chess Championships which gets underway at Antalya, Turkey. Ivana has already made it to the Limca Book of Records for becoming India's youngest World Champion in any sport. If she retains her title then it surely will set a benchmark that few will hope to match in the future as well. Also accompanying her will be Commonwealth Under 18 Girls Champion and National Junior Girls Champion Bhakti Kulkarni of Margao. Bhakti stood 8th last year in the Under 14 Girls Section and will hope to be among the medallists this year. Both the girls will be having the benefit of the presence of their coach Dronacharya Awardee Raghunandan Gokhale who had not been present in the last edition of this event. This year there will be tough competition for the 49 member Indian squad as the Russians will be playing after a one year hiatus. Last year's competition was boycotted by the Soviets due to their diplomatic differences with Georgia. There will be a tough fight in all the sections and a lot of people are predicting a surprise from the host nation's players as well. The tournament will take place from the 17th of November till the 29th of November. The Turkish Chess Federation (TCF) has guaranteed that the kids will participate in 'one of the most professional competitions in the history of chess for the World Youth Championships'. TCF aims for record participation in these events. More than 2.000 players and 1,500 accompanying persons will be visiting the beautiful resort of Antlalya for this chess feast!
