GOVERNMENT'S EASE OF LIVING INDEX
The government has ranked Indian major cities on a 100 point scale reportedly
on four parameters of governance, social, economic and physical infrastructures
and has stated Pune is the most livable city with Panaji at 90th position! I
was born, spent my school and beautiful college years in Poona. Today renamed
PUNE is an overcrowded noisy polluted city, generally smelling of garbage with
traffic and parking problems, pedestrians finding it difficult to walk safely,
pot holed roads, power failures/load shedding , flooding at the slightest
rains. Besides the well maintained army contonment which they are trying to
destroy, heritage buildings replaced by ugly buildings with flora gone and
crows/scavenger birds predominant, shanties/ beggars unoticed on streets. I
have stopped going on holidays to Pune where most of my family stays, because
it brings tears to my eyes to see what they have done to my beloved city. Many
people I know have run away from Pune to settle in Goa. This exercise I suppose
is good government propaganda for smart cities and I pray Panaji does not
follow suit into a concrete jungle. Ease of living for whom?
