We must thank Matanhy for expressing his concerns for OCIs. What comes to my mind is, by granting OCI status to persons of Indian origin, Government of India has brought on record those who have relinquished Indian citizenship. This will enable the Government to check their holdings back home as many Indians especially Goans still own properties in India. Like Tenancy Act, who knows what future legislation may curtail further rights of OCIs, time alone will tell. Its worth taking Matanhy's advice on board. The question of Anjedevi island should be asked to, Dr. Wilfred Desouza, Luisinho Faleiro, and Francisco Sardinha, as they were in the government enjoying plum cabinet posts, at the time when Ravi Naik was the chief mininster. Eduardo Faleiro equally to be blamed for he was in top position of power in Delhi. Matanhy was the General Secretary of Gomant Lok Pokx and I know he was the only voice (see New reports/press statements) against the gifting away of Anjedivi island to the Navy, while all of Goa slept in slumber. Matanhy has devoted his entire life to Goa's cause, but find it difficult to understand that his 'ommissions' are being questioned by critics, in a copy book style, while none of the above mentioned Congress 'christaos' who ruled Goa for 30 odd years are held accountable for the sorry state of affairs. I always had a fear that Goans who went out of Indian to earn their living by acquiring foreign citizenship would face some problems. This appears to be coming true. In this context I am sending the press statement which was published on Herald dated 5th May 2011, I hope no Goans will loose their right over the ancestral land or the lands they purchased. Please make all efforts to protect your land in Goa and circulate this press report to Goan friends who are residing abroad. = RESPONSE= Dear Mr. Saldanha, The title of your jpg is misleading. There is a difference between 'no right' and 'no political rights'. Mr. Jha's reported statement quite accurately follows the law as enacted. Allow me to state the following: [1] Once Goa was annexed by India, Indian law became supreme. All Indians could travel to, work in and reside in Goa. [2] Indian political parties could establish themselves in Goa. [3] The Govt could appropriate any land it wanted - for the stated interest. [4] You were part of the Legislative body which uttered not one murmur (please tell me I am wrong) when Anjediva was taken away from Goa and Goans prevented from praying at the church. [5] You were part of the Legislative body which uttered not one murmur (please tell me I am wrong) when 'nuevo' Freedom Fighters were added to the list by the party which you supported in Parliament. [6] You were part of the Legislative body with not one murmur from you (please tell me I am wrong) when an opposition member was manhandled in the House. Now .... I believe that [7] Anyone who has obtained (or re-confirmed) his citizenship of country A, should NOT have political rights in country B. [8] In the same vein, employment in Government agencies should not be available to citizens of a foreign government; the same with becoming a member of the armed forces. [9] I really do not know which 'low-life' would, in 2011, want to put himself/herself up for elections to the 'Vidhan and Lok Sabhas' (Legislative Assemblies and Parliament) - given the amount of money required to contest elections and the corruption and horse-trading which ensues. Why, I ask, would any self-respecting Goan want to be a part of such a corrupt and self-serving apparatus? [10] Why would any honest NRGoan want to purchase any agricultural property in 2011.....to give it to the tiller a la Shashikala? (Remember now ...the law states the term ...ACQUISITION which is different from HOLD (say) inherited property) [11] Why would any sensible person want to purchase anything - which requires lawyers - when the lawyers are crooked ..and are capable of sharing client information with the 'hostile' party? Good Lord! I better go and pray at the Grace Church, Margao.....now. That having been said I ask you - Why do you want us to circulate this press report? How will it help? Only foolish Goans will continue investing in Goan property and politicians. A sensible NRGoan will treat Goa like the rest of the world does ....a place for an occasional holiday...There is NO more avenue for juvenile nostalgia or this 'hyper-exaggerated' impression that anyone can do anything about it. In short, the Goa we knew is done with. Time to accept it. The mercenaries and hawks are in charge. They have no heart for Goa ...only lip and concrete.
