New Central Library building construction in full swing NT Staff Reporter Panaji, May 1The construction of the new Central Library is in full swing and is expected to be completed in the first half of January 2009. This building is coming at the EDC Patto Plaza. According to the curator of the Central Library, Mr Carlos Fernandes, the state library would have 6 floors with every modern facility such as automation, networking and digitisation. The new library would be centrally air-conditioned. "The land acquired for the new Central Library is 13,420 sq mt and the estimated cost for the 6-floor building - civil works is around Rs 14 crore," informed Mr Carlos Fernandes adding that the new library state would have state-of-the-art facilities. The curator further added that government was recruiting staff for the upcoming library as well as for libraries from villages in the state that are going to revamped." "The present Central Library would be in use and will keep all the records of newspapers, periodicals and also planning for children's section," said Mr Fernandes. Around 100 chairs would be accommodated in the new building and a special section for maps and charts would be provided. The new library would be having newspapers, magazine section, Central Library city reading hall, networking, browsing and CD-ROM centre, non-print and audio/visual section, library extension services, Portuguese collection/section, books delivery section, binding section, legal cell section, philosophy, education room for methods of technology, cafeteria, xerox centre section, auditorium, seminar, exhibition section, and a special section for art and culture.
