Using the power of cyberspace, a young duo from here are working to network publishers and information related to them. The recently-launched 'The Publisher's Post' is an e-newsletter developed by Margao's Queenie Fernandes and Leonard Fernandes, co-founders of the Goa-based Dogears Etc. and CinnamonTeal Print & Publishing Services. Taking inputs from various individuals, publishing houses, websites and blogs, they are working to build a http://dogearsetc.com works to facilitate the trade of "niche and rare publications", mostly by independent publishers and self-published authors. Registered site users can also trade used books and request books they're searching for. Only after your book is sold, 11% of the list price has to be paid to the site as facilitation charges. Now, the new venture 'The Publishers Post' -- in its fourth electronic edition -- seeks to be a "weekly newsletter that contains information relating to the book publishing and book selling industry in India." In the context of a booming economy, and growing literacy in many parts of the country, Indian publishing appears to be booming from many angles. One recent issue of the journal at dogearsetc.com/thepost/ focuses ona golden jubilee seminar on independent publishing in today's India (Oct 4, India International Centre, New Delhi); and an Indian Magazine Congress 2007 to be held on October 8-9 at Mumbai. Its theme is "Magazines 2020". Meanwhile, the database and research services provider Scope eKnowledge Center, India, has launched its integrated publishing support solutions. This company sees itself as a leading provider of world-class content and database development services to leading scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishers. Former Microsoft executive John Wood of the Room To Read project meanwhile was in India, looking for corporate donors for his not-for-profit libraries for the poor. The organization got a $1 million (about Rs4 crore) grant from investment bank Goldman Sachs Goup, earlier this year to fund libraries in India, apart from other initiatives, as reported in the business newspaper 'Mint' of Mumbai. 'The Publisher's Post' cites report about how the Net is helping publishing. It notes that two Malayalam bloggers got their first books published through some major publishing houses in Malayalam. Hyderabad-based Pressmart meanwhile has been noticed as making "inroads" into the US digital publishing market. It inked a deal with Suburban Newspapers of America (SNA) to provide a digital, same-as-print electronic edition of their monthly association newspaper, Suburban Publisher. Other stories emerging also look at plans for a Fortune magazine Indian edition; a 200,000-title strong book mall in Mysore; and how Kenyans look at the imports of cheaper Indian and Malaysian books into their country. News also comes in from publishers, looking at their new releases. Likewise, LexisNexis is also providing content for Halsbury's Law Magazine, launched with CyberMedia. Priced at Rs 100, this legal magazine aims at the corporate world and lawyers, and others in the lifestyle, travel and IT sectors. Subscription for specialist magazine, initially at least, will be by invitation only. There's even a focus on a blog focussing on unique book covers, other links to blogs, a report on the world's "disappearing languages", and movements within the publishing industry in India.
