"Those who have lived here for more than 10 years may stay; even many of them have married with the locals. However, we are against any more of them coming here, we demand that our own villagers be employed," panchayat member Vishwajeet Rane said. Nearly 1000 Biharis, mostly working in factories as labourers, have been driven out of the village. Rane told GT that the locals are agitated by the bias shown by managements of factories to recruit Biharis. "The migrants are ready to work for less wages, even Rs 40 per day. This has resulted in a large number of our local youth being unemployed," he said. (H) --------------------------------------------------------------------- GNBite * Being the watchdog that takes our reader's side ... --------------------------------------------------------------------- CUT THE CRAP: Film-makers are protesting in Goa, because the current government hasn't lived up to the Parrikar promise of giving grants -- Rs 2 million for celluloid films, a quarter million for digital films, and Rs 300,000 for documentaries. Hold on a minute, can't the market support such cultural productions? Subsidised film-making could become yet another racket, in a state where the siphoning of offical funds has become a skilled art. As someone pointed out, a film could be made for even Rs 12,00,000 ... so why should the subsidy total almost twice that figure? Fabian Da Costa of Manfa Music says, "We are not handicapped. We don't want grants and subsidies. But stop 'piracy'." (Sunaparant, Oct 30, 2005). Should film-makers also be added to the long list of grant-takers in this small, already financially unviable state? We have questionable-quality 'official language' books published with subsidies, computers (mis)used with subsidies, insured cattle that mysteriously die and then compensated for (Herald, Nov 6), trawlers monopolised by politicians, unneeded government jobs that go to the undeserving, irrigation projects that turn into white-elephants and more. Some great Konkani films were produced in the 1950s and thereafter, even without the thought of subsidies. Instead of trying to widen their market, and make products that work, our film-makers are spending their time protesting for government largess. Maybe former CM Manohar Parrikar was smart enough to incite the greed of a number of diverse sections. But who foots the bill? Can Goa continue to be a grossly over-subsidised state? Goa does need to promote its cultures; but subsidies aren't the way of doing so. --------------------------------------------------------------------- DEATHS --------------------------------------------------------------------- ANJUNA: Margarida D'Souza b 1922.
