o Communal riots rock Curchorem. Five injured, shops,

  rioting mob.

THE SITUATION TURNED tense in the morning, when members
of the Muslim community obtained permission from the
Quepem deputy collector to stage a protest rally in
Curchorem, to condemn the damage to the Muslim prayer
house at Guddamol. However, rumours spread that activists
from within and outside the State had converged at
Curchorem to join the protests and that hundreds of
protestors had assembled at the prayer hall at Cariamoddi-
Curchorem armed with swords, lathis and other weapons.
This incited members of the Hindu community, who rushed
to the Shivaji Chowk near Cine Prashant, with the
numbers swelling to thousands by about 4.30 pm. The mob
then began to proceed towards Cariamoddi, but were
stopped by a police force in a bid to prevent the
two groups from clashing with each other. At this
juncture, the mob began pelting stones and bottles at the
police, who retaliated by resorting to three rounds of
lathi-charge and firing tear gas shells to quell the
confrontation. As the news of the clashes spread across
the town, all shops in Curchorem and Sanvordem downed
their shutters anticipating violence in the market.
The mob then turned their fury towards the market
and targeted the shops of Muslim merchants, breaking
open their shops and looting the goods. They also
damaged a petrol pump and a number of gaddas run by
  the Muslim community. (Herald)
