Newman commented, in a mail: "I'm planning some sort of paper by October about Hindi film and the image of Goa that 'pulls' 1.8 million Indians a year to become tourists there. Well, OK, in part anyhow. I've been watching a whole bunch of Hindi films to complete this. Now there's a tough assignment...." If you want to know more about Newman's perceptive insights on Goa, just check out his book published by the Other India Bookstore, Mapusa [EMAIL PROTECTED] VICTOR RANGEL RIBEIRO [EMAIL PROTECTED] commented on The Goan Forum recently: "Thank you, Aloysius, for sending out that post about Robert Newman. I made his acquaintance in person a couple of years ago, and also have his book about Goa on my shelves; I greatly admire him and his work." http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goa-Goans/ ARLETTE AZAVEDO from Mapusa in Goa wrote a touching tribute LYDIA DE SOUZA, from Porvorim-Goa. Azavedo wrote: "She is one of the greatest and finest teachers that anyone could ask of, at St. Mary's Convent High School, Mapuca. Mrs. D'Souza has left a deep impact on many of her students, as she had the qualities of serving her students at all the time. Mrs. D'Souza had a very pleasant nature and our classroom lit with happiness as she entered, due to her sparkling personality. For her teaching career was a passion and she loved mingling with all of us. We could be in any problem; it was she who had a knack of dealing with the students. I really feel privileged that I was her student and I am sure that all our 'greenchilles' [as St Mary's girls were called in Mapusa, specially by their 'rival' Britto Boys] shall feel this way, as it was Mrs. D'Souza who taught us right from wrong and the values of life." MARIA-SUZETTE FERNANDESDIAS <maria-suzette.fernandesdias @anu.edu.au> in Australia has recently convened a conference "Legacies of Slavery: Comparative Perspectives". Hend on July 11, the conference saw papers from all over the globe. There was even a poster presentation from Goa and a publication from CARMO DE SOUZA on legal concepts. One presenter of a paper, Prof. JEAN-PIERRE ANGENOT who presented a poster at the conference in Canberra, is incidentally convening a conference on the slave route and the African diaspora in India, in Goa in Jan 2006. Dr Fernandes convenes another conference in November 2005 see http://www.anu.edu.au/culture/conf/sacred/index.htm THEMISTOCLES D'SILVA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> says that while collecting historical information about his village of Arossim -- particularly from Church records -- he came across "several entries of baptisms and deaths of African slaves and in many instances, the names of their owners/masters". He writes: "Having had earlier contact with Sr. Celine Joseph of the Daughters of the Cross, who first started a mission to help the Siddis, I visited Yellapur to see first hand these people and their environment. At the URL below, the website of Goa Research Net, is a report of my observations and cursory research, which I thought may interest Goa Research Netters." http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/1503/siddis.pdf Core group members of the BMX (Britto's-St Mary's-St Xavier's) Goa Reunion 2006 met at Lucindo Faria's residence at Morod, Mapusa. Also the talk about its range starting from North of Goa downwards is also not true since I recently spotted one individual in the Amboli Ghat." More wildlife postings on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wildgoa MIGUEL BRAGANZA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> draws attention via the Botanical Society of Goa mailing list that people (not necessarily residents) are busy cutting trees in the Mhadei Wild Life Sanctuary which the Forest Department is duty bound to protect. He writes: "Hills are being cut in Morlem-Sattari to rape and loot the granite for road construction. I am told that a stone crusher has been set-up in the area by one of the former chieftians.... The CM himself has spoken in favour of denotifying the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, part by part..... just like the termite eating a big tree...unnoticed. Reforms never come from the top. A person with four aces never asked for a fresh deal. We have to work for it. I am doing my part. So are people like Sandip Azrencar and Rajendra Kerkar. Dr.Nandkumar Kamat does it his own way. Former Conservator of Forests, Richard De Souza, paid the price for the notification of the sanctuaries during the era of Lt.Gen J.F.R.Jacob as Governor of Goa. He has been shunted to Daman. We may forget him. Generations to come will thank him for his sacrifice. may his tribe increase." -------------------------------------------------------------- DIASPORA -------------------------------------------------------------- PETER NAZARETH <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> told the NewDiaspora mailing list: "I have received the new issue of AWAAZ and it does indeed pay fine tribute to (the Kenyan politician assassinated post-Independence, who is of Goan origin) PIO GAMA PINTO. I was studying at Leeds University when I read that Pio Gama Pinto was assassinated--three weeks after Malcolm X was, if I remember right, and Malcolm had apparently stayed with Pio in Nairobi.... Incidentally, (prominent African writer) Ngugi mentions Pio, favourably, in two of his novels." CORNEL DaCOSTA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> commented: "I though I'd just mention that Pio and Malcolm X were assassinated in the same week in February 1965. MALCOLM X on a Monday and Pio on the Friday. Further I know that Pio and Malcolm had been in close touch and had met a number of times in Nairobi. All this is going into my biography of PIO....The Aswad material is helpful and there are some excellent photo- raphs there." ttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/NewDiaspora/ MERVYN LOBO <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> offers some pictures from the recent Tanzanite picnic. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/themervynlobo/detail?.dir=/e975&.dnm=1340.jpg&.src=ph J.BIRKMEYER <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> praises the band which graced the recent East African Reunion Gala Dance. She writes: "For those of you who asked about the great music we had at our Reunion Gala Dance, and for those of you who didn't ask but were wondering about the music that help make the evening so fantabulous: The name of the band is "Naked Flame" led by Joseph Rebello. Joe was born in Tanga, Tanzania and was a founding member and leader of the "Love Bugs" in Tanga (renamed "Revolution Band ). This band was the first resident band at "Simba Grill" at Kilimanjaro Hotel in Daressalaam and performed there for 8 years." Here's wishing the returned Gulf expat all the best from all at Goanet. -------------------------------------------------------------- NETWORKING PEOPLE -------------------------------------------------------------- RENE BARRETO <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> a networker across the Goan diaspora was one of the few non-medicos to be invited to the GOMECO (Goa Medical College) annual gathering in Telford, UK. He wrote: "At this Goan doctors gathering, (we were the only non-dotors or Hators as some would like to call us in Konkani) we were made very much at home.... many of those present spoke in Konkani which was indeed a great pleasure to listen to. The doctors included both Hindus and Catholics were also joined by their families, it was indeed a great -- but a simple occasion -- where every one mixed very freely and every one looked after each other -- and us too :-). One of the best Goan gatherings I have attended!" Says he: Have lost touch with and would be grateful to know whereabouts of Perpetua (Pepi) Fernandes ex-Morogoro; sister of Epiphanio. Their father worked for East African Railways till mid/late1960? GoaResearchNet is talking about the origins of Goddess Saraswati. To join this list, contact TEOTONIO R. de SOUZA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. The original post came from JORGE DE ABREU NORONHA. CLARE and PAT de SOUZA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes that the Catholic Goans Network's -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- June 11 membership drive was a "real success". He says: "Remember, you can still recommend friends and relatives to CGN before August 15 by telling them to register online at our website and provide your name as reference. Alternatively, send us their name(s) and ID and we will invite them." ARUNAVA CHAUDHURI <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> of www.indianfootball.com says the latest "IndianFootball.Com Club Ranking” sees Calcutta giants East Bengal Club (540,0 pts.) remain on top, while NFL champions Dempo SC (347,0 pts) and Mahindra United (346,0 pts.) remain 2nd and 3rd. Putting out GNB is a lot of work for a small team, but you can help with only a small amount of time spent each week. We need people who read some Goa-related mailing lists which we don't read and summarize threads in them. All you need to do to contribute is send us an email as early as possible. In the email just put short paragraphs, each summarizing a thread or event from the mailing list or online resource you are reporting on. In parentheses, mention the URL of the posting, so that full details are available to GNB readers, at the click of a button. Postings should be brief and summarised. Send in your submissions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ================================================ KALPNA DESAI <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made it to Goanet via a lengthy route. Her ancestors are Gujarati, she was based in East Africa, and now lives in London. As a visitor to Goa, she loves the place and does her bit to help and stay in touch with friends she has made her. Here's a link she sent for the BBC World Class -- great for educators: o http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldclass/ To get started, go to o http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldclass/getstarted/ This is basically for twining UK schools with others. Goa University librarian PANDURANG V. KONNUR undertook the task of digitalising the entire library that comprised more than 1.3 lakh books. All the books have been digitalised using "digital indexing" and "bar coding." Besides, libraries in colleges affiliated to Goa University have been brought under the University Internet network and one can know the availability of books n various colleges at the click of a mouse in http://goalnet.unigoa.ac.in. http://www.hindu.com/2005/07/10/stories/2005071003210300.htm [Thanks to Eddie Fernandes of Goanvoice.org.uk for the link] -------------------------------------------------------------- INITIATIVES WORTH SUPPORTING -------------------------------------------------------------- SANDRA GORDON [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes in from the UK to say: "I would be interested to learn more about the Goan branch of the National Association for the Blind, as mentioned in the Goa Net News Bytes (11 July 2005). The reason I ask is because I work for a local charity working with blind adults and children here in Scotland, and I would be most interested to communicate with a similar organisation in Goa, and find out what services they offer the blind population in Goa. Would you have an address or an e-mail address where I could write to them?" LUIS 'LUI' GODINHO <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> points out that after the London explosions, the Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency(ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston. The idea is that you store the word "I C E" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. One of the champions working on localisation of Free Software into Indian languages, GUNTUPALLI KARUNAKAR <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> says he needs a "little help" on Konkani. Says he: "I need some sample text -- few words and a para or 2-3 lines of text. This is basically to be used as sample text for font rendering. You could directly add it at (needs a simple signup) http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/KonkaniTextSample Since Konkani is written in different scripts, text could be added in those scripts." Can Konkani meet the challenges of the computer software age? Please also update. http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/Konkani You could add links to other Konkani resources online (portals, blogs, discussion groups). For Free Software's South Asia language plans see http://www.indlinux.org HETA PANDIT, writer and conservation activist, writes on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goaheritage/ to say a book on Panjim's heritage homes is ready for release. Release function will be on August 6, 2005 at 6 pm at the Old GMC Building. This function will also be dedicated to "all Goans everywhere" and World Goa Day will be mentioned at the function. Says Heta: "We are also preparing a manual for heritage home owners to help them repair their houses without feeling intimidated about repairs and expenses. and of course so they are not at the mercy of unscrupulous contractors." http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goaheritage/ CARMO DCRUZ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> who is based at Indian Harbour Beach, Florida and is Associate Professor of Engineering Systems at Florida Tech writes: "(Can we look to) future trends in engineering education and inspire our Goan youth to aspire to become the 'Engineers of 2020'? I would also like to bring some of them over to Florida for graduate studies and train them as Engineers of 2020. During Sabatticals, I plan to be in Goa and train our Goan engineering and management students." "Also, BTW, we have had a number of highly successful Goans from the IITs. After reading (Goanet's) article I am hearing from some of them. But we ourselves do not know much about other Goan IITians. All we know is that our erstwhile CM Manohar Parrikar was from IIT Bombay. (We need a) forum for all Goan IITians, other engineers, doctors and other successful professionals in Goa and abroad to group together and do something for Goa and its future generations -- just like the Telugus, Tamils, Kannadigas, Gujaratis, etc are doing for their states." -------------------------------------------------------------- CULTURE, FILMS -------------------------------------------------------------- Moving Images Film Club <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> screened the Italian film The Son's Room (2001, Director Nanni Moretti, 99 minutes) on July 15 at the International Centre, Goa.
