Margaret Mascarenhas wrote to the Gomantak Times: On 7/10/05 GT published a report with the headline "Panjim snubs 'snob' Wendell", implying full representation of the ordinary citizens of the entire city in response to Wendell's Letter to the Editor regarding IFFI. But I think it was a flame masquerading as reportage. One of the reasons I say this is because I used to be an editor and I know that when ordinary citizens write letters, we don't usually respond by sending reporters rushing out in the street to solicit views on each letter. Editors do not give ordinary citizens so much importance. So let's not pretend this report was about championing the ordinary citizen. Reportage, as opposed to op-ed, is expected to cover as many relevant angles of an issue as possible. Yet, magically, in a city with almost as many POVs as there are residents, Panjim has suddenly come together on this one ultra important newsflash: Wendell Rodricks is a snob for not realizing that Panjim loves its garbage and traffic and actually wants more of it. Please. Last year numerous residents of Panjim, including several local rickshaw drivers, complained to me personally that they felt their city had been hi-jacked, that they were prevented from free movement, that they hated the garbage and chaos the IFFI generated. A number of residents have expressed anxiety about the same issues this year. In addition, villages and cities have become polarized on the subject of the garbage crisis, with some city folk claiming that village folk should not be allowed to sell in city markets if they won't allow cities to dump in their villages. You should write about it, people on both sides of the fence say to me. You should do something, they say to Wendell. Wendell and I both live in the village. We compost and use EM solution and avoid plastics. We, like everybody else, have lives. It's not really any skin off our noses if Panjim stinks or Panjimites can't find parking. And taking on garbage as a platform isn't very sexy. I've known Wendell Rodricks for years and, he is no snob. He is accessible and goes out of his way to help people from all walks of life and actively participates in his village community. He is passionate about Goa and genuinely committed to her environment. These are facts not routinely covered by the press. Because it's boring. I think Wendell was misrepresented, perhaps due to clumsy wording in his Letter to the Editor. But not being a semantic guru doesn't make anyone a bad person. Since I know his views on the subject of IFFI, since he was not given the opportunity to defend himself before the GT "report" came out, and since he accepted the invitation to be on the Entertainment Committee with the express purpose of representing the views of many with no voice, I want to try to clarify his reasoning on the subject, based on conversations we have both had with people in Panjim, many of whom have endorsed this reasoning in a signature campaign: 1. Street shows and food stalls have nothing to do with IFFI. They are events staged to camouflage the fact that ordinary citizens are left out of the loop, and to keep them engaged in fanfare while the real business of film viewing and celebrity partying goes on. 2. The unrelated public events, pretending to be related, attract crowds from outside Panjim and cause traffic congestion for Panjim residents as well as a huge amount of garbage. 3.The State Government should not have decided to hold IFFI at all, without first coordinating with the municipal authorities on traffic and waste management. But since it did, it should not now compound the problem with pseudo and ancillary public sideshows, food stalls, simultaneous beach viewing, etc UNTIL AND UNLESS it comes up with a clear and public plan on how waste will be disposed, and how the traffic burden on residents will be handled. If the Government can't clean up a mess, it should not create it. 4.The State should compensate ordinary citizens for keeping them out of the loop on the real action by giving them free public viewing of films after the extraordinary citizens, delegates, and central bureaucrats buzz off from Panjim. Feel free to disagree. One is all for public debate. Public engagement is crucial. But let's be fair and let's represent opinions as opinions, and not as reportage. And then let's find a solution together. Margaret <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> says that an active response to the garbage campaign has convinced them to extend the endorsement campaign, after which names of those supporting the campaign would be forwarded to Delhi. She writes: Please circulate it among your friends and family in Goa, Goa residents and among Goans outside Goa too. They don't need to sign the actual letter, just send me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "yes on clean goa initiative" in the subject line, and in the body of the email: their name, occupation, residential location. And get ready for the Clean Goa Initiative meet at the Mermaid Garden, Panjim. Stay tuned for details. --------------------------------------------------------------- FILM IN GOA ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.rveritas-asia.org/news/octwk1india5.htm India - Documentary film reintroduces contributions, life of hypnotist-priest (UCAN) A new documentary film on a 19th-century Catholic priest aims to educate Goans about the pioneer of hypnotherapy. The priest, Father Jose Custodio de Faria, died in 1819 at the age of 63. Popularly known as Abbe Faria, he practiced hypnotherapy in Goa, then a Portuguese colony, and in Europe, where he also reportedly fought in the French Revolution. About 400 people attended the premier of "In search of Abbe Faria: the Hypnotic Vision of a Goan Pioneer," held Sept. 20 in the Goa state capital of Panaji, 1,910 kilometers southwest of New Delhi. The first screening of the 42-minute documentary was held at the foot of a statue of the priest to mark the 60th anniversary of the statue's installation. Isabel Santa Rita Vaz and Cecil Pinto produced the film. According to Pinto, they did two years of research for the project. They wanted "to educate the modern generation about the existence of a world figure, who sadly was condemned during his lifetime and is forgotten by his own countrymen," he told UCA News. Interviews with descendants, admirers, overseas writers and other people linked to the priest are interspersed throughout the film. Pinto said Abbe Faria was the first to use hypnotism to cure people from various ailments. His work led to the establishment of eight research institutions in hypnotherapy in various countries, the producer added. Laurent Carrer, a U.S.-based French writer, told UCA News through the Internet that Abbe Faria first proposed the idea that suggestion was involved in the hypnotic phenomenon, a concept later adopted by the Nancy School. Nancy is a city in northeastern France where therapeutic hypnosis developed in the 19th century. Another admirer of the hypnotist-priest is Rajendra Hegde. According to the Hindu psychiatrist, the priest's study of hypnotism has helped doctors and therapists relieve pain, release stress and understand the human mind. "He made a significant contribution to the study of the role of verbal suggestion in trance induction," added Hegde, who admitted to being "obsessed" with Abbe Faria. A stain glass drawing of the priest and a terracotta statue of him hypnotizing a woman lying at his feet adorn Hegde's house. The psychiatrist said the priest's method has gained worldwide acceptance over the years. However, many modern mental health professionals are unaware of the priest's contribution to the field. "This may be because of lack of adequate emphasis on his work and unavailability of his book," Hegde suggested. Legislator Matanhy Saldanha initiated revival of interest in Abbe Faria. Father Joaquim Loila Pereira, secretary to the Goa archbishop, attended the premier of the documentary. He remarked that the film has brought people to the foot of the priest's statue after 60 years. --------------------------------------------------------------- PROFILES FROM GOA: CLINTON VAZ ----------------------------------------------------------------- GOA NEEDS MORE CLINTONS: Clinton Vaz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> has been doing work for the CCP, Panjim's civic body, as a consultant on the waste management problem for the past month. He says he is "quite happy to say that lots of my work, suggestions and ideas are being used and implemented already". He believes that slowly, but surely, things in Panjim are settling down into place. Clinton could not continue with a Phase II, as he leaves for Mumbai on Monday, for a new job in mechanical engineering, which he sees as both very promising and challenging. Clinton is one of the active young Goans, who is involved in a wide range of fields, right from Free Software, to wildlife, environmental issues, garbage and more.
