REPORT FROM PILAR: Fr. Frank Mendes sfx <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes on the silver jubiliee celebration of the St Agnel Higher Secondary School at Pilar: Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, Pilar Goa reached a significant milestone in its chequered history as it completes 25 years of its establishment. Inspired and spurred on with the new 10+2 system the late Fr Philomeno D’Costa took great pains to begin the Institution in May 1979, when such Institutions were just difficult to be approved. Fr Costa guided the destiny of this institution until his retirement in 1993. Thereafter, followed the late Fr Agnelo Noronha, Fr Richard Couto, and Fr Carlos Fernandes. Presently, Fr Frank Mendes has taken over the reins of the school. On August 6, 2005, the silver jubilee celebrations were given the right start. A solemn thanksgiving Mass was offered in the Pilar Monastery Church with Rev. Fr. Galdino Monteiro, Provincial Superior of Goa Province and Chairman of the Xaverian Educational Society, who presided over. He was joined by Rev Fr Walter Gomes, Central Delegate Superior, Fr Allan Noronha, Manager, Fr Carlos, ex-principal, Fr. Jose Vaz, Local Superior, Fr Pio Furtado, Director, Pilar ITI, Fr Mario, Director Fr Agnel’s Apostolic School, Fr Joaquim Mascarenhas, Director, Fr Agnel’s Minor Seminary, Fr Augusto and Fr Frank the Principal of the school. The Mass was organized. The Mass began on a solemn note with a procession of the 50 staff members and the celebrants who were ceremoniously led to the altar by the school children who performed a prayer dance. At the altar the main celebrants were welcomed with an arati. A special feature of the offertory was the prayer of the faithful beautifully planned and executed with all those concerned with the school -- the management, principals past and present, staff both past and present, parents, benefactors, and students both past and present -- were remembered and prayed for through a leaf which was then arrange to form a tree with fruit signifying the gradual growth and maturity the school has achieved and the wonderful achievements in its cap. The school has set up the Society of Pilar, Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School Silver Jubilee Fund. --------------------------------------------------------------------- READER FEEDBACK --------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM HONGKONG: We have being reading the Goanet daily clippings for a while. It "beehoves" me to mention that (couldn't resist, sorry). I was amused by the swarm of emails it attracted; i'm glad you didn't listen to the doomsayers and that you wisely let Nature run her course, and you were even able to marvel at the wonder of it all. So all the well-intentioned advice on raincoats, helmets, smoking torches were not called for! ;-) I too had a beehive outside our house in Panjim. The course was just as you mentioned; they stayed a while and then departed, like good guests, not overstaying their welcome. Let it Beee! He writes: "We have too few names on a couple of lists and some of the contact numbers are old or don't work at all. The list I've compiled (after telephonically verifying) so far has 33 snake catchers in Goa, but just 20 are contactable. Should a situation arise wherin a person needs a volunteer to capture a snake, it is important that the concerned people have this information and more importantly, correct information. Therfore, please send me any contacts that you may have so that this list can include everybody, including those working on their own. If you do have any info, I need the following: Name of the Person; Organization Working For; Operating Area, Villages; Mobile Number; Landline Number. Please send me this information before September 17, 2005." --------------------------------------------------------------------- OFFTRACK... by Cecil Pinto --------------------------------------------------------------------- Risque Goan Jokes (pp 170, Rs. 290/- softcover) Compiled and translated by Cecil Pinto [Totally Fictitious Events Section] Our friend from Moira, Santosh Pednekar, appears on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and towards the end of the programme had already won Rs. 50,00,000. "You've done very well so far," said Amitabh Bachchan, the show's presenter, "but for Rs. 1 crore you've only got one lifeline left - Phone a Friend. Everything is riding on this question...will you go for it?" "Sure," said Santosh. "I'll have a go!" "OK." "The question is: Which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest? (a) Robin, (b) Sparrow, (c) Cuckoo, or (d) Crow" "I haven't got a clue," said Santosh, "so I'll use my last lifeline and phone my friend Benny Coelho from Mumbai. He's a Moidekar, but since he was born and brought up in Mumbai he's very smart and knowledgeable." Santosh called up his friend in Mumbai, told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him. "Arree Baba Santosh!" cried Benny, "Simple yaaar...it's a cuckoo." "Are you sure, Benny?" asked Santosh. "Arrre bhai hundred percent sure maaaan! Pakka!" Santosh hung up the phone and told Amitabh Bachchan, "I'll go with Cuckoo as my answer." "Is that your final answer?" asked Amitabh Bachchan. "Sure, Sir!" There was a long, long pause, then Amitabh Bachchan screamed, "Cuckoo is the correct answer! Santosh, you've just won Rs. One Crore!!!" The next night, Santosh threw a big party for all Moidekars at the Moira Club. Benny was specially flown in from Mumbai as the chief guest. When the time for speeches come Santosh takes the mike and asks Benny, "Tell me, Benny? How on earth did you know it was the cuckoo that doesn't build its own nest? I mean you know precious nothing about birds otherwise." "C'mon yaaar! Baskya!" laughed Benny. "You Govans are so foolish yaaaar. Everybody knows a cuckoo lives in a clock!" --------------------------------------------------------------------- EVENTS IN GOA --------------------------------------------------------------------- ENGAGED ENCOUNTER: Valentine & Anna Coelho <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> inform that the next Engaged Encounter (EE) weekend begins on September 23 (7 pm) and continues till 25 Sept (6pm).
