Announcing this, the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the decision has been taken following UGC and AICTE guidelines which were based on a Supreme Court judgement on admission to professional courses. (H) MANMOHAN TO BE SWORN IN AS PM TODAY: The Manmohan Singh-led coalition government would be sworn in on Saturday (May 22) at 5.30 pm. President APJ Abdul Kalam will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Manmohan Singh at a function in Ashok Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. It was not immediately clear how many ministers will be sworn in along with Manmohan Singh but sources said the team is likely to be small to begin with. (PTI report in Herald) CONG TEAM TO STUDY IFFI ISSUE: The State Congress party on May 21 constituted a six-member committee headed by former MP Shantaram Naik to study IFFI related issues. The committee has been given 15 days to submit its report. This was disclosed by GPCC president, Luizinho Faleiro. (H) GOVT IGNORING SAFETY NORMS AT IFFI PROJECTS, SAYS NGO: The People's Movement for Civic Action has accused the government of non-adherence to safety norms during the on-going construction and demolition work related to IFFI and four-laning project in Panjim. (H) CONG HINTS AT REVIEWING CONDUCT OF GOVERNORS: GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro, on May 21, indicated that the Congress-led government at the Centre would be reviewing the conduct of several governors. Responding to a query whether the Congress in Goa would formally request the Centre to recall Goa Governor Kedarnath Sahani, Mr Faleiro said, "It is the prerogative of the President, although subject to the review of their (governors') performance by the Central government." (H) ANTI-TERRORISM DAY: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday administered the anti-terrorism pledge to the State government officers and staff of the Secretariat to observe the 13th death anniversary of former prime minister, late Rajiv Gandhi. (GT) MOTHER HELD FOR BABY DUMPING: Police investigations into the baby dumping case at Orgao, Loutulim, has revealed that the act was committed by a 23-year-old girl, who allegedly gave birth to the victim baby. Maina Curtorim police placed her under arrest under section 318 of IPC for concealing the birth of a newly-born dead child and secretly disposing it. A labourer, who was staying in her house and helping her handicapped father, developed intimate relationship with the girl, police claimed. (H) SCHOLARSHIP FOR GOANS TO STUDY IN UK: The British Council has invited applications from students of Goan origin for the academic year 2004. In this regard, the De Souza Trust provides financial assistance in the form of a scholarship for Goans to study in the Untied Kingdom. The funds for this scholarship are derived from the estate of Deigo Frank de Souza. Since 1998, when the scholarship was first introduced, ten Goan students have successfully completed their studies in the UK in subjects as diverse as media management, architecture, computing and design, TV documentary-making, music therapy, architectural conservation and human rights. Application forms can be collected the British tourist assistance office, Dempo Tower, Patto Plaza, Panaji. To be presented to the British Council, Mumbai by May 31. (NT) SSC, HSSC RESULTS ON 25, 31 MAY: The results of SSC and HSSC examinations of March 2004 will be declared by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher secondary Education, Alto Betim on 25 May and 31 May respectively. (GT) "GHODDEANCHI ZATRA" AT POINGUINIM: The traditional Ghoddeanchi Zatra of Shree Vetal Temple at Mahalwada-Poinguinim, will be celebrated on May 22.The Ghodde, followers of Lord Vetal, are four in number. On the day of zatrotsav, they are pierced with hooks in their backs and with a sword in one hand a coloured cloth in the other, are made to climb two wooden poles about fifty feet in length. The four of them are then tied with their backs to the wooden poles and laid on the two poles in a horizontal position. (H) CELESTIAL WONDER IN THE SKY: A few who peered into the sky soon after dusk were delighted by the spectacle of the earth, moon and Venus coming in a closer alignment yesterday. The sight was visible for a short period on Thursday and lasted about an hour yesterday. Eight days after the episode-perhaps the first such instance in the country since the EVMs replaced the ballot papers-poll officials have set out to unearth the mystery behind the failure of this full-proof voting machine. (H) "VIGYAN RAIL" ARRIVES: The specially designed train carrying an exhibition "Vigyan Rail"-the Science exhibition on wheels-arrived at the Margao Railway station at 5 pm on May 21. The exhibition features exhibits and activities depicting the achievement in scientific heritage by the National Council of Science museums, environment by Ministry of Environment and Forests and other organisations. The exhibition will be open to the public from May 22 to 24 between 10 am to 6 pm. (H) SUMMER FESTIVAL AT SIOLIM: Popular Konkani singer young Chico and his son Jr Chico will perform today, while Konkani pop star Olavo and tiatr artiste Anthony San will take the stage on Sunday and Monday respectively at the three-day "Siolim Summer Festival 2004". To be held in the compound of St Anthony's church from 6.30 pm onwards, the fete will comprise a variety of games stalls, request programme, Konkani musical shows, a live performance by the beat group "Breathless", dance performances, mute-beat, contests for ice-cream eating, banana eating, vegetable carving, flower arrangements and waste-out of wealth. Albuquerque was suspended from duty in connection with an alleged suicide case at Molcornem. An enquiry was instituted and he was reinstated with effect from yesterday and posted at the CID security office in Panaji. (GT) DEMPO COACH HURT IN MISHAP: Dempo Sports Club coach Armando Colaco was injured in a road accident at Davorlim late on May 21 night. Armando was traveling home on his two-wheeler when he lost balance, skidding off the road, landing into a nearby pit. Passers-by rushed to the assistance of Armando. "Armando's head injuries prompted his shift to GMC. His condition is stable and there is no cause for worry," a hospital source told Herald.
