'MYSTERY' SUBSTANCE HITS VEGETATION: Vegetation, including coconut
plantations, facing the Arabian sea along the Cansaulim-Velsao coast stands
affected by a mysterious substance since the last few days. While leaves of
coconut trees along the belt have turned yellow, other vegetation appeared
charred at some pockets as if sprinkled with an oily substances. This
unusual phenomenon has taken locals in the know by surprise since it first
came to light early this week. "This could be a result of some pollution,"
suspected one local. (H)

DOCTOR IN DOCK: A senior doctor at the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, has
been ordered to return the non-practising allowance paid to him since he
joined service, after it was discovered that he had a private practice.
Government doctors conducting private practice have come under the scanner
of the vigilance department, sources said. (GT)

KONKAN DISASTER WAS PREDICTED: Activists, particularly in Goa, had
vigorously fought the (Konkan Railway) project in the early 90s on the
grounds that it would cause ecological damage and that the alignment was
unsafe. (TOI)

'RENAME PANJIM ROADS': The Panaji Nagrik Kruti Samiti has warned the
Corporation of the City of Panaji of a city-wide agitation if it failed to
bestow Indian names to roads in the capital city by September 30 this year
even as it "renamed" two road names on June 18. (H)

NRI FACILITATION CELL RECONSTITUTED: The government has reconstituted the
executive committee of NRI-Goa Facilitation centre and has appointed a
monitoring committee as well as advisory committee of NRIs residing in
various foreign countries.The advisory committee will consist of Edgar Leo
Martins (Portugal), Zamir Khan (Saudi Arabia), Rene Baretto (London), Eddie
Fernandes (Kuwait), Humberto Rabindra Pimenta (UK), Victor Anthony Fernandes
(Canada), Victorino Pinto (Switzerland), Alexander Menino (Kuwait), Simon
Xavier D'Silva (Doha-Qatar), Thomas A Periera (USA), Yvonne Pereira (Kenya),
Alex Wilson Coelho (Kuwait), Ashok G Bale (New York), Surendra Vasant Borkar
(Australia), Ms Karin Elizabeth Fernandes (Canada), Maria de Lourdes

'FILE CHARGES AGAINST MICKKY': The Goa Bench of Bombay High Court on Monday
has ordered the Colva police to file a chargesheet against ex-Tourism
minister Mickky Pacheco for arson and rioting. The police had been dragging
their feet over filing of the chargesheet after Mickky got elected from the
Benaulim assembly segment. (GT)

KARNATAKA SEEKS 'FACTS': With the Baina issue figuring in the Karnataka
legislative council, the Karnataka government has sought factual position on
the charge of eviction of Kannadigas after the demolitions in the red-light
area. A letter signed by the Chief Secretary of Karnataka KK Mishra has been
received by the Goa government on June 18. (H)

NO DISCRIMINATION: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said on June 18
that the question of regional discrimination in demolishing commercial sex
workers' cubicles in Baina does not arise as the structures were razed down
as per the High Court order. )NT)

POLICE NET MURDER ACCUSED: The Vasco police yesterday nabbed a murder
accused. Naresh Parab, a former convict, and his four friends had stabbed
Khadak Singh Pancholi (22) and Ravi Shinde at Bogmalo yesterday. While Kadak
succumbed to his injuries, Ravi is battling for life at the GMC, Bambolim.

CYCLONIC WINDS DISRUPT LIFE: Strong Cyclonic Winds in the last few days has
wrought havoc with the electricity lines, plunging several places in the
state's countryside into darkness. (H)

TANKER WITH 'CHEMICAL' SEIZED: A tanker was intercepted by Excise Officials
for allegedly smuggling into Goa a liquid chemical which was suspected to be
destined in the State for adulteration of petrol. Three persons from Gujarat
were detained after the case was handed over to the Mapusa police for
investigation. (H)

STRIP PADMASHRI: The Nationalist Congress Party has called for stripping of
the Padmashri 2002 bestowed by the President of India on former Chairman and
Managing Director of Konkan Railway Corporation Elattuvalpil Shreedharam and
suspension of its current CMD B Rajaram, for the fraud committed while

MAN DROWNS AT CAVELOSSIM: One Joaquim alias Jack Coney Fernandes (40),
resident of Cavelossim, met a watery grave at Cavelossim beach when along
with four others he had gone to cast their nets in knee-deep waters on June
18. (H)

LOK SHAKTI VOWS TO PROTECT SECULAR FABRIC: During a half-day convention at
GV Niketan hall in Margao June 18, Lok Shakti, a socio-political
organisation, on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day, resolved to protect and
preserve secular and democratic fabric of the State and to cherish values
enshrined in the Constitution of India. The organisation has stated that it
stands for people-centric development, restoration of democratic norms,
transparency in decision-making, equality of status and opportunity. (GT)

PROBE IN LINESMAN'S DEATH: The electricity department has instituted a
departmental inquiry into the accidental death of a linesman-cum-helper,
Pedro Caldeira of Azossim, at the Pilar junction on June 15. (GT)

PANCHAYATS & ELECTRICAL SPARES: The government has taken a decision to
increase the expenditure limit towards purchase of electric spares from
Rs.25,000 to Rs.one lakh. (H)

VICTORIA QUITS GSCW: Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes resigned as a member
of the Goa State Commission for Women, protesting against the manner in
which the State government handled the issue of rehabilitation of commercial
sex workers from Baina without taking GSCW members into confidence. (GT)

KONKANI LITERARY TRANSLATION: A two-day workshop on 'Konkani Database
Literary Translation' was jointly organised under the auspices of Central
Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore and Goa Konkani Akademi, Panaji,
recently. The workshop was held at the GKA, Circuit House Annexe, Panjim.

unique Pilot Plasma Pyrolysis Incinerator plant at the GMC Hospital,
Bambolim, on June 18. Plasma Pyrolysis is a state-of-the-art technology,
which integrates thermo-chemical properties of plasma with the pyrolysis
