(H) IFFI WORK GAINS MOMENTUM: With Goa signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Centre on the staging of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the process to get the state ready for the big show has started picking up. The Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), which is the parent body for IFFI-Goa will hold its governing body meeting on August 14 at the old GMC complex, to finalise the arrangements for the festival. The IFFI executive committee meeting will be held on August 19 to okay the arrangements finalised by the ESG. He is a patient who hopes not for recovery, but awaits what he refers to as 'the warm welcome of death'.Weak in vision but firm in voice, he claims innocence while stressing that he has been framed by the police and public prosecutors of the state. (Jyoti Dhond in GT) RINGLEMANN TO LEAVE: Suspected paedophile Jorg Harry Ringlemann is scheduled to leave Goa today afternoon. According to information available from reliable sources, Ringlemann produced his air tickets before the police officers stating that he would leave for Mumbai before proceeding to Germany following the deportation order. (GT) MAG ALLEGES HARASSMENT: The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) called on the Chief Secretary, Mr D S Negi, and submitted a memorandum condemning the undue harassment being meted out to two-wheeler riders across the state by the traffic police. The Chief Secretary assured the delegation that he would look into the matter and ensure that any harassment of two-wheeler riders will stop. The MAG delegation demanded that the authorities should wait for the outcome of the high level committee being appointed by the government to study the helmet issue since some highways pass through narrow village roads. (NT) BISON KILLING: THREE HELD: Forest officials at Mollem on August 12 arrested three persons on charges of killing to bisons, after the skeletal remains of the two bisons were unearthed at Caranzol-Collem, about 7 kms from the Mollem Range Forest Office. (H) GARBAGE DISPOSAL ISSUES RAISES A STINK IN MMC: It has been alleged that some councillors of the Margao Municipal Council have been trying to take undue advantage of the garbage disposal problem in Margao. Sources informed that the irregularities was exposed at the council meeting on June 28 when opposition councillors alleged that the chairperson was getting officials to record a higher bill then the actual cost of clearing the garbage and demanded an investigation into the matter. (NT) IMPORTANCE OF REMEDIAL TEACHING: The Taluka Level School Complex Committee in collaboration with Vasco Super School Employees organised a seminar on the topic 'School Administration and Management', which stressed upon the need for remedial teaching in helping the child to improve his/her academic potential. Speaking on the occasion, Mr L M T Fernandes, deputy director of education cautioned that poor quality of teaching in schools can cause learning disabilities. (NT) KIOSK OWNERS THREATEN TO COMMIT SUICIDE: In a stern warning, the displaced gada owners and vegetable vendors, from new market, Curchorem, have threatened to commit suicide, if the Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council fails to remove the hawkers and vendors reportedly doing business in the open space around the municipal building in the Curchorem market. (Paul Fernandes in GT) HUMAN RIGHTS COURT CAN: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has held that the Human Rights Court has the jurisdiction to try private complaints of human rights violations even if the party has not approached the National Commission or State Human Rights Commission, overturning the judgment of the Special court which stated otherwise. (H) SCHEME FOR SENIOR CITIZENS: The Government of India has notified a new saving scheme for senior citizens to be operated through post offices. The five-year scheme offers nine per cent interest per annum quarterly on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December. Persons who have attained the age of 60 or opted for VRS after the age of 55 can opt for the scheme and deposit a maximum of Rs.15 lakh. (GT) EXPOSITION PANEL MEETS: The Meeting of the Committee on the Exposition of sacred relics of St Francis Xavier met under the chairmanship of transport minister, Mr Madkaikar, at the Secretariat on August 12. The meeting deliberated on issues related to providing accommodation to pilgrims of low income group, traffic and parking plans and also introducing inland water ways transport, erection of stalls. (H) CHARGES OF THEFT: Lloyd Coutinho, a resident of Acsona, Benaulim, has alleged that the south Goa Additional Collector, Narayan Sawant, accompanied by police personnel and the demolition squad, demolished temporary huts constructed in a private property thereby causing a loss of over rupees one lakh besides stealing a cash amount of Rs.30,000 and a gold chain weighting 50 gms. (GT) CHANDOR LOCAL DIES: A pedestrian, Florian D'Silva, from Cavorim-Chandor, died on the spot when a scooty dashed against him at Chandor on August 12. (H) 'GOAN OUTMIGRATION": In the "History Hour" series the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Alto Porvorim, will hold a presentation/discussion based on an ongoing project of the Research Institute for Women, Goa (RIW), entitled "Goan Outmigration to the Middle East", on August 19 at 5.30 pm. Outmigration specially to the Middle East has been a major feature of Goan society and has impacted Goa and the Goans in more ways then one. This prompted the RIW to investigate the various aspects of this phenomenon. Hence the project is multidisciplinary (history, economics, sociology). The work is still in process and far from complete. The participants will be Dr Fátima da Silva Gracias, Prof. Ramola Antão, Prof. Isabel Santa Rita Vas, Dr. Zinia da Silva and Dr. Carmo Souza.
