VASCO POLICES STRIP, SEXUALLY ABUSE FOUR CHILDREN: Even as the State police department announced the formation of a new child protection unit, it found itself on the firing line with four of its own officers accused of sexually and physically abusing four minor street children, including one physically handicapped teenager. The boys were detained on September 5 on charges of stealing and were produced before Juvenile Justice Board Judge SD Natekar for remand. When a social worker visited Apna Ghar on September 6 morning the children alleged that they were tortured at the police station. (GT) BOULDERS PARALYSE RAILWAY TRAFFIC: Railway traffic on the South Western sector was paralysed on September 6 after tracks between Dudhsagar and Karanzol railway station. The partial cancellation of train services was likely to continue till 9 September since the heavy downpour had caused obstruction to restoration works, informed South Western Railway public relations general manager. (GT) MPDA TO INCLUDE SALCETE VILLAGES: Apparently ignoring protests from the local panchayats, the newly-constituted Margao Planning and Development Authority has virtually ratified the government's move to include 19 Salcete villages in the body. (H) MAY BE RECONSIDERED: Apparently stung by criticism and growing opposition to his government's decision to include a large number of villages in the newly formed Planning and Development Authorities, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on September 6 indicated that the issue could be "reconsidered" but only after the code of conduct for the bye-elections in Poinguinim events. (H) REVENUE FOR COMUNIDADES: There are about 90 comunidades under the South Goa jurisdiction. Salcete taluka has 40 comunidades, Quepem has 24, while Sanguem and Canacona talukas have 6 comunidades each. A former president of one of the comunidades in South Goa, Mr H Fernandes said that Comunidades get their revenue from the village and are independent self-sustained autonomous institutions, which manage village governance. However, he alleged that the revenue drawn by the comunidades has presently stopped with the introduction of the Tenancy Act by the State government. (Pio Esteves in NT) TRIAL RUN OF IFFI MULTIPLEXES: The trial run of three multiplexes at the old Goa Medical College being constructed for screening movies during IFFI 2004, will commence from 31 October. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the trial run is expected to last ten days. New English, Hindi, French and good movies in other languages will be screened in all three multiplexes to test the functioning of light sound and air conditioning systems. (GT) RS.4 CRORE FOR EXPOSITION WORKS: The Core Committee of the Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier on September 6 approved budgetary estimates of Rs.4.5 crore for various works to be completed for the 45-day religious event.For sanitation, the estimate drawn by the PWD is to the tune of Rs.32 lakh. (H) NO FLATS DESPITE FULL PAYMENT: Are you buying property in Goa? Doing so without acquiring the title certificate and the nil-encumbrance certificate on the property would cost you dearly. This has happened to about 24 persons who paid a builder an average of Rs.4 lakh each and bought flats in Diyana Holiday Homes at Umtavaddo, Calangute.The builder had mortgaged the property to the EDC to avail of a loan of Rs.65 lakh before he sold the flats to the unsuspecting buyers. He took their money but concealed the fact that the property they were buying was mortgaged. (Joaquim Fernandes in NT) TRAIN PASSENGER DRUGGED, ROBBED: Despite many cases of train passengers being drugged and robbed, rail commuters are still not careful enough. The latest drugged-and-robbed case occurred on 3 September. A fellow passenger, who identified himself as Sharma, offered tea to one Shankar Ray from Mangalore, when the train stopped at the Ratnagiri station. Ray refused the offer stating that he was a diabetic patient. However, he drank the spiked beverage after Sharma claimed that the tea was free from sugar. When the half dizzy Ray woke up in Mangalore, to his horror, he found his suitcase missing. The suitcase contained gold ornaments and other articles totally worth Rs.1.28 lakh. (GT) I-T OFFICIALS RAID BABUSH'S BANGALORE FLAT: A flat in Bangalore belonging to Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio alias Babush Monserrate has been searched by the Income Tax officials. (H) GEARING UP FOR BRISK BUSINESS: With barely over a month left for tourists to arrive in Goa, drug peddlers in the country seem to be gearing up to make brisk business in the State. This seems to have come to light following the arrest of one Santosh Verghese (33) by Mumbai police on August 31. The accused was found in possession of brown sugar worth Rs.21 crore, which is considered to be the biggest haul in the recent past. Police in Mumbai say Verghese smuggled brown sugar into the country and supplied it to foreign nationals in Goa. The sale of narcotics increases mainly during the peak season and during the rave parties held in the corner of North Goa beaches like Anjuna, Vagator and Arambol.Sometime back a Goa police report pointed to at least 59 "mysterious deaths" of foreign tourists during 2003-2004. (Gerard Fernandes in Herald) LIGHT FADES: While the light emanating from the water under the Tonca-St Estevam bridge reappeared after a gap of two days, a youth from St Estevam did the unpredictable by jumping from the bridge and emerging from the water with what appeared to be a chargeable battery and a bulb, but swam away and disappeared. (GT) NGOS VOICE FEAR OVER SAFETY OF KIDS, WOMEN: Goa will continue to remain an unsafe place for women and children if society does not awaken and make the government 'Act' against the accused who inflict atrocities on the weaker sex and the innocent. This view as voiced on September 6 by NGOs and concerned citizens who met in the capital city (Panjim) to discuss the fate of women and children in a society where, they alleged, the legislature, the executive and judiciary were less sympathetic to all woes placed before them. (H) AITUC RALLY: All India Trade Union Congress will hold a public rally on September 8 at 9.30 am in Panjim to draw attention of the government towards falling investment and shifting of industries out of Goa, according to an announcement by General s Secretary of AITUC in Goa, Christopher Fonseca.
