(GT) DOCS MARCH CITY STREETS: Doctors in Goa took to the streets under the aegis of the Indian Medical Association to protest against the assault of their colleague, Dr Uday Kakodkar, at the Sanguem Health Centre last week and demanded police action against those involved. A delegation, led by their president, Dr Anil Gaunekar, later met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and were assured that the State government will lodge an FIR against those who assaulted Dr Kakodkar, while he was on duty at the PHC in Sanguem. Mr Parrikar, also addressed the morcha at the Customs House in Panjim and promised that "stern action" will be taken against those who attacked the doctor and damaged public property. (H) "IMA STRIKE IMMATURE": He may have sympathized with the striking Indian Medical Association doctors in the state, but a Quepem-based doctor did not forget his oath to be available for the benefit of the sick. The clinic of Dr Netravelkar remained open to patients on Monday. "A strike should have been used as the last resort. Instead, it was used at the initial stage on Monday," Dr Netravalker told Herald, while justifying his decision to refrain from participating in the day-long strike. (H) GOVT EXPECTS CASHEW OUTPUT TO DOUBLE BY 2010: Goa expects to double its current cashew crop of 15,000 tonne by 2010 said the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, at the three-day India Cashew Convention 2004. The chief Minister also revealed the government's plans on holding a cashew festival on lines of the Konkan Fruit Festival. Mr Parrikar said: "Vietnam's growth should motivate us to expand the market and we should also emulate Vietnam rather than fearing competition". (GT) IGNORE POLITICO'S ORDERS: COURT: The District and Sessions Court, South, has rapped revenue Minister Pandurang Madkaikar for issuing instructions to Executive Magistrate, Mormugao, who was hearing a case under section 133 of the CrPC. The court went a step ahead by asking quasi-judicial authorities - right from the district magistrate down to executive magistrate - to ignore instructions or directions from ministers or initiate appropriate proceedings against them for their interference with the judicial process in accordance with law. (H) PROTEST OVER POLITICAL INTERFERENCE: The National Campaign-Goa, which includes associations like the Goa Civic and Consumer Network and All India Trade Union Congress, various NGOs, trade unions, village panchayats and social activists, held a state-level 'dharna' near the Fisheries Department to oppose the increasing amount of political interference in the village panchayats, on 4 October. Campaign co-ordinator Soter D'Souza said the dharna was sought to create awareness among the rural people and mobilise the people for exercising their duties and demanding their rightful place in village planning.
