When contacted, DGP Amod Kanth said that he has not received any communication from the State government nor has he been informed about the decision. (GT) MULTIPLEX OPENS WITH MUCH FANFARE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on November 12 confessed that he took more interest in the multiplex project mainly because of the strong criticism leveled by the Opposition. Addressing the invitees after inaugurating the four-screen INOX multiplex in the Gold GMC complex at Campal, he said that the multiplex will provide a boost to the entertainment and tourism industry in Goa. He said more than 100 engineers and architects of the GSIDC and consultants and 2500-3000 workers have worked for the projects in three shifts. The Kala Academy would be ready by November 16 and the four-lane road by November 20. According to him, the fast-track projects like the multiplex have given good results. (H) NO STAYING AT BOM JESUS: Devotees intending to stay overnight in the Bom Jesus Basilica at Old Goa, during the forthcoming Exposition of St Francis Xavier, will have to come with recommendations from their respective parish priests or with valid identity cards in view of the tight security cover that would be clamped around Old Goa church complex, during the period. Several devotees coming from far-off places stay overnight in the corridors of the Basilica during the annual novena and the feast of "Goencho Saib". The police have informed the embassy of Germany and the body of the dead German national has been preserved and kept in the morgue at GMC, the sources said. (NT) GOA OBSERVING 3-DAY STATE MOURNING: The Goa government declared a 3-day State mourning period from November 11 to 13, 2004, as a mark of respect to the late Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat. During the period of State mourning, the national flag will be flown at half mast in Goa and there shall be no official entertainment. (Edit in Herald) KONKANI CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC MEET: The faithful from Goa and outside have been flocking at the National Konkani Catholic Charismatic Convention that got off to a rousing start at the Carmel College grounds, Nuvem, on November 11. Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao called the faithful to live in holiness and build their families around the teaching of Jesus Christ. The crowd for the convention was estimated to be 20,000 for the first day, but has been growing. (GT) DALGADO LIBRARY: The inaugural function of the Goa Konkani Akademi's Mgr Dalgado Library will be held on 19 November at 4.30 pm at Panaji. The said Library premises allotted by Government of Goa to the Akademi is situated adjacent to the existing Akademi's, 243 Patto Colony, Office. In addition to this library's inaugural ceremony there will also be the inauguration of book sale counter and release of different books funded by Goa Konkani Akademi under its various schemes. (GT) YOUTH HELD FOR THREATENING TEACHER: A 30-year-old youth from Parcem, Pernem, was arrested for threatening to throw acid on a teacher's face if she failed to give in to his advances. The youth was harassing the teacher who is employed in a school at Calangute. The police released him on bail bond of Rs.5,000 and a surety of like amount. (NT) DIOCESAN COMMUNICATIONS DAY: The Diocesan Communications Day will be celebrated in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman on 14 November. The main official celebration will be held at St Jerome's Church Mapusa, with a Solemn Mass at 8.45 am followed by a multi-media programme presented by few of the 10 parishes comprising the deanery of Mapusa. (GT) 'MEALS ON WHEELS': On Children's Day, El-Shaddai Charitable Trust wants that no children in Goa will go hungry on the street. From 14 November, El-Shaddai under the concept of Meals on Wheels will be distributing meal packets in the afternoon to children in Mapusa, Vasco and Margao. "Although the world has more than enough food to sustain people, a dozen children under the age of five are dying every minute from hunger-related diseases and the number of malnourished children are on the rise," said El-Shaddai member Anita Edgar. (GT) TWO CORNER STONES: On November 8, Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao laid the foundation stone for a proposed playground at Sarzora on the occasion of his birthday celebrations. Around the year 2000, his predecessor and then minister, Arecio D'Souza had laid a similar stone for the same ground, coinciding with his birth anniversary. Both D'Souza and Alemao jostle to claim credit for the yet-to-be-built playground. "ALVORADA" MUSIC CD RELEASED: "Alvorada", a CD (the dawn of Goa celebration), a master piece presented by wellknown Goan drummer Abdonio Rodrigues, Curchorem, was released by Bondo, an international artist and India's best known percussionist, at Chef Fernando's Nostalgia at Raia on November 11. Bondo took Abdonio by surprise when he called him his "guru" under whom he head learnt to play the drums for the first time. Live music was presented by Abdonio's eight-piece Goan brass band, with Joaquim and Anthony on trumpets, Juju on tenor sax, John Sequeira on clarinet, Romy on rhythm and Abdonio on drums. "Alvorada" CD is produced by Agnelo (Borim) and the tracks include Alvorada, Mando, Dulpod and a Tango, which intend to preserve the traditional music in Goa. Agnelo said that it was his endeavour to keep alive this dying music played with blowing instruments for future generations to enjoy. (GT) JOSEPH'S STICK-WORK: Goa may be minnows in the national game - Hockey - and Goans hardly remember that Joseph (Joe) Pereira, from Siolim, was one of the best hockey players. He represented India at the Rome Olympics in 1960. He was honoured by the Karnataka Hockey Association in 1968 and by the Mangalore Hockey Association in 1984 for his immense contribution to the national game. During his 22-year stint as a prolific centre-half, he came to the team's rescue on a number of occasions.
