Online: http://goa1556.notlong.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dec 16, 2010 -- the third Thursday of the month -- was the slot for the second meeting of TTT Goa Book Club, at Broadway Book Centre in Panjim. Among the books discussed were: * Joel D'Souza: Goa's Own Trinity. Holy Trinity, Nagoa, is the second-oldest church in Bardez. On completion of 450 years, this 196-page hardbound book (price Rs 250) was authored by cyberjournalist Joel D'Souza. At one time, the church covered the parishes of Saligao, Parra, Anjuna, Assagao, Siolim and Oxel. Covers the Franciscan Footprint, Church of the Holy Trinity, Nagoa Village, Arpora Village, Baga by the River, Roll of Honour, Social Milieu, Parish Associations, Village Homes, St Joseph's High School, Comunidades, Panchayat Rule and Second Home. More info from the author joelds at gmail.com Published by the Holy Trinity Church, Nagoa, Bardez. First printed 2010. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/5267478002/ * Frank Unedited: The Best of Frank Simoes. The back cover dramatically narrates how "the Fates smiled down" and, at three in the morning, gifted a line which (as the ad guru would have us believe) will make Reliance immortal, 'Only Vimal'. These is the collected writing of a Goan who "gatecrashed the advertising party" in the Sixties. This book promises to "bring together the best of Frank Simoes: as ad man, as inveterate traveller and biographer of the two places he loved the most, Mumbai and Goa, as a great gourmand and connoisseur of good feni and Scotch, and as an irreverent, witty and often scathing chronicler of our times." This book promises to have a CD by Remo Fernandes (by the sealed copy we opened, didn't). Foreword by Dom Moraes. 2003. New Delhi: Roli Books, Rs 395. Pp 352. ISBN-81-7436-303-3. Available online. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/5266872625/ * Dinesh D'Souza: The Virtue of Prosperity. 284-pages of a Goan-origin Republican, which talks about "finding values in an age of techno-affluence". In a world where poverty is shamelessly rife, the affluent need their own ideologues. But, agree with it or not, it's very cleverly argued. For instance: "Former devotees of capitalism (conservatives and and the "right-wing") have now formulated a critique of it that goes beyond anything that the traditional enemies of capitalism ever conceived. The "left-wing" egalitarians, after all, accept that technology and markets generate wealth and that wealth is good. Their only complaint is that wealth is not being properly distributed." US$14 ISBN-0-684-86815-6. Published in 2000. (Recently, this book was available for Rs 100 in Goa, but seems to be no longer available.) http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/5267476784/ Panteleao Fernandes mentioned his self-publishing models. Alice D'Cruz, head of the department of English at St Xavier's College, Mapusa, shared a view on reading habits among young adults and teenagers. Some of us later walked down to the nearby Assistencia Goa, near Don Bosco's, which was founded a hundred years ago to this day. A souvenir commemorated the role played by General (Dr.) Jose Maria da Costa Alvares (born in Margao in 1851, a medico by profession who studied in Lisbon) and Adv. Jose Maria Pereira (lawyer and journalist born in S. Matias, Divar in 1868) in shaping the early days of this institution. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/5267533180/ Patricia Pinto, whom we met there, mentioned a book on Goa we hadn't even heard of before... Some present were heard bargaining hard for a discount, and discussed what Goa-related books they might trade amongst themselves. If you would like to list (online) a book you want to exchange or dispose at a price, contact fn at goa-india dot org or see http://wikiwikiweb.de/Goa/TTTGoaBookClub Next meeting: Jan 20, 2011, 5 pm, Broadway Book Centre.
