That book *'Anne of Green Gables'* has been on girls' school curricula in Japan for a couple of generations; now, as he explains, there are charter-plane loads of Japanese women landing in his home town (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) to attend the stage musical by the same name. It runs in a fully professional Theatre every summer from June to September -- six nights a week and two matinees! If you're interested, the author was a woman named Lucy Maude Montgomery (d. circa 1938). Dan made these and other interesting comments while conducting a book reading at the Xavier Centre the other day. As a little 'aside', in referring to the Diaspora, Dan made the point that many 'diaspora people' become highly successful, while those left behind (the aboriginals/'tribals') are too often left disadvantaged. "In our country the native Indian populations died like flies from measles and T.B., contracted from the incoming Europeans -- us," says the Canadian based in Goa. "What is left of them live today are on 'Reservations', and are only now *beginning* to see some light at the end of their long tunnel."
