[Goanet] Chinchinim Village
Chinchinim Village: A Community Committed to Social Concerns Chinchinim Village has always demonstrated empathy for social issues, and efforts continue to address these concerns in the best way possible. The vision and passion of individuals have driven forward causes close to their hearts, extending to broader human concerns. The village can be proud of its role in fostering human development and meeting vital needs. Society of Vincent de Paul Attached to the church, this organization regularly addresses the urgent needs of a few unfortunate individuals. Through Sunday collections, donations, and fundraising activities, they provide assistance for medical, food, student requirements, and other basic needs. However, with limited resources, much remains to be done. Organizations Supporting the Physically Disabled An ex-teacher initiated this venture to assist children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. The organization provides wheelchairs and other essential items and treats the disabled with care by organizing entertainment and home visits on special occasions, often with gifts. A much-anticipated annual outing, accompanied by parents, is a highlight. They also aid in facilitating government benefits, helping individuals process their claims. The initiative is sustained through voluntary donations and occasional fundraising events. It has cultivated a strong sense of community and continues with passion and enthusiasm. Lions Club and Junior Jaycees Both organizations started with great enthusiasm but unfortunately dwindled over time, unable to maintain the initial momentum. However, during their active years, they significantly contributed to the welfare of the village. Widows' Association This association remains vibrant and connected to the state organization. It caters to the unique emotional, medical, and financial needs of widows, offering support for the feelings of loneliness they may face. The group organizes religious pilgrimages, celebrates patron feasts, and holds regular fellowship gatherings. Although widows in the community are not ostracized, the emotional support offered by this group is a vital psychological need. The association is funded by well-wishers. Senior Citizens Group A recently formed organization, connected to the state association, it aims to provide care and concern for the well-being of senior citizens. Currently in its early stages, it is growing and has been well-received, though more participants are needed to strengthen its efforts. Chinchinim Citizens Committee In the past, this committee raised several issues of social concern and welfare, offering a public platform for debate and support. It was one of the most vibrant organizations in the village. Unfortunately, it has become dormant in recent years and is in need of revival. Soccer Clubs Chinchinim is known as a hub of football, with several clubs—CRCC, Villagers of Chinchinim Union, Sarzora Club, Sirlim Sports Club, and Dramapur Sports Club—leading the charge, mainly through soccer tournaments. Many players from these clubs have pursued football as a career, some becoming coaches and referees, representing the village at state, national, and international levels. Many wards within the village also promote cultural and sporting activities. P.C. Trust This registered body promotes academic and sports excellence, awarding students at various levels (SSC, Std XII in Arts, Science, Commerce) and providing scholarships for higher education, sports, music, and teacher appreciation. Awards are extended not only within Chinchinim but also to AVC, AVCC, and even beyond the village borders, including one award for the state board of Goa. The trust also provides financial aid for uniforms, textbooks, and medical expenses. Its achievements are documented in eight publications and three hand-bound books. Currently, funds are raised mostly through donations, with cash incentives offered as meaningful encouragement. These efforts are appreciated by parents, schools, students, and the community. Trust has published 8 issues highlighting avhiements of our Villagers Public Health Center (PHC) and Village Library Both the PHC and the village library are valuable assets, providing vital services to the community. [Goanet] Chinchinim Village blessed with double vocations in a family
Chinchinim Village is spiritually blessed The Chinchinim Vilage in the past was admired, famous and was called granary of Priests and Football players.Over the years this exclusive tag is being diminished. However the focus here is only on DOUBLE vocations in a family .It is the greatest gift of Divine for this spiritual calling to be the hands and feet of Christ to spread and strengthen Catholic FAITH.The parents are the main inspirations, who have inculcated , encouraged , and sown the seeds to wholeheartedly embrace this vocation ,need to be saluted , glorified and appreciated for their contribution to the Catholic community. The congenial atmosphere and guidance at home has led to the germination, sprouting and blossoming of the spiritual seed from within . I recall a few examples from the past and present . Any ommissions are unintentional and hence there is scope to enlarge the list, since a refrence to this effect is not on record. 1. .Late Fr Presentaco Furtado and late Fr Barnabe Furtado, Sarzora..Parents Minguel Antonio/ Mrs Maria Conceicao Dias 2. [Goanet] Chinchinim Village feast
Feast of our lady of Mount The feast of Patron saint of Chichinim Church is actually on 8 September Some original documents show the Patron was named as Mount Mary and it continued for years before this change Though there are directions and church decisions, suggestions that feast be celebrated on the exact date, it is celebrated on a Sunday Now there are no Presidents, from among the members of Fabrica to celebrate the feast It was their privilege, honour and prerogative to host this celebrations There were some, who for financial implications politely, refused to be the Presidents It is for these reasons predominantly, parishioners shied away from enrolling as Members of Confrarias Though this has not fueled the membership, there is certainly increase i women members . In such times, there were any number of Villagers and faithful devotees volunteering to do the honours It was assumed that publicity was the main motive, even though the financial burden to out do others was not ruled out entirely On the directive suggestions of Synod, the celebration is now a village affairs There is a sense of belonging for all the parishioners by their contributions, and participation From early compulsory donations the stage is reached for voluntary contributions Every year there is overflow of money, which is enough to stage the feast for many times over , But the appetite to continuously to gather surplus beyond immediate requirement is not understandable In fact there is rightful request for the transparency of details of expenditure, income and pointed reference to the higher authorities For many years in the past these details were published in the Parish bulletin for the information of the parishioners This practice is discontinued arrogantly, defiantly in recent times, much against the wishes of the donors. The much talked about fierce objections of air, sound pollution is not enforced any longer and there is pleasurable fire works display, the most polluting source. The request to limit the fair in Fabrica property to 3 days is not considered seriously as yet,and which was the norm in the past, The area is littered with filth for days, even after collecting a fee and the plastic waste is then burnt, ignoring the hazards of emissions of dangerous toxins. The multitudes of traders, who reside in the area defecate in the open causing unbearable stink and health hazard The arrangement of portable toilets is implemented by default, sighting expenses as the impediment Income considerations ride above public welfare The stiff charges are actually passed on the customers The market for furniture is being discontinued due to adamant and unreasonable attitudes of the vendors and lack of adjustment and flexibility of those that matter The village feast being first after monsoons, draws crowds and devotees, form as far as from Cuncolim Assolna Orlim Cavelossim Varca. Betul, Navelim with resources plenty, the erection of Pandal, CCTV relays on all sides, the faithful are more comfortably accommodated at ease and peacefully participate in the religious services The church square. and surroundings on all sides., the school compound are kept free for parking and disturbances of amplified music and cacophony of wooing by the traders are kept at bay.The newly developed Market Complex and specially the area outside should not have been utilised for commercial purpose, but to ease the parking problems The spiritual preparation of the villagers and all religious services are well planned The Parish youth do a commendable ,praise worthy and yeomen service in orderly regulating the parking lot . The evenings are a happy outing for the families, visitors and guests, with fun and activities now spreading at nights past 9.p.m The fair being on the main arterial road Betul Chinchinim, inconveneience to the travelers is taken with the good spirit, traffick police easing the bootlenecks Happy feast to all our Chinchinim folks spread far and wide Hope it will revive pleasant memories of the feast and keep you connected and interested Nelson Lopes Chinchinim 9850926276
[Goanet] Chinchinim village - a pedestrian view
Chinchinim is a village in southern Salcete. National Highway no; 17 neatly passes through and along with State highway from St. Sebastian Chapel junction to Assolna bridge divided the village into eastern and western parts. There is another road from Orlim/Deussua bridge via bazaar area to Sarzora which cuts Chinchinim into northern and southern halfs. River Sal forms its western boundary , Orlim and Carmona being villages on the other side of river Sal. In the south are Assolna and Cuncolim villages and to its north is Navelim. The villages Chinchinim, Assolna and Carmona have a common ending- oneam - known as Chinch-oneam, Ons -oneam and Corm-oneam respectively Chinchinim is Portuguese version of Chinch-oneam. Chinch in konkani is tamaring tree. Tamar-e-hind in Arabic is date (sourish fruit) of India. This sourish fruit is the essentian ingredient in Goan kitchens. It is possible in olden days the village was full of chinch trees (tamarind trees) although the low lying paddy fields which get inundated in monsoon season occupy much more area especially along the River Sal. The village church is dedicated to O.L. of Hope and nearby is bazaar area being the central part of the village. There are 3 high schools, a hospital, four banks ( a sign of economic progress!) a post office, a rural telephone exchange, panchayat ghor, fish market, a football ground all in the vicinity of the crowded bazaar are. All minor village roads end in the bazaar area, Chinchinim is the biggest rural village of Goa with Catholic population of 22 thousand. Navelim has more Catholics but northern parts of Navelim are urban areas being extension of Margao town. Originally Chinchinim had wards like Deussua, Sirlim, Dharmapur and Sarzora. In good old days when there were no roads, the trading commodities were carried by sailing ships in the River Sal and it is possible there were two minor riverine ports like Deussua and Tolleaband. When the Portuguese constructed a road from St Sebastian Chapet to Assolna, trading activities moved towards present day centre of the village. It is possible that in a century or two trading zones may move eastwards towards Dharmapur, Sarzora and Panzorconi because Konkan Railway passes through these areas. and it is equally possible that National Highway no: 17 could be shifted eastwards. When missionaries started converting Salcete population, Jesuits entered Chinchinim via Orlim and landed in Deussua ,a trading center in those days. There was a Hindu temple in Deussua over whose ruins today stand s St. Anthony's Chapel The other minor trading centre Tolleaband was mos t probably served by another temple at Devular which is a small circular mound type elevation surrounded on all sides by paddy fields. Devular is at the southern end of Secreamvaddo and probably Devular temple priests together with their retainers lived in Sankle-Tolleaband ward. Dr. Alvaro de Loyola Furtado in his historical notes on the village of Chinchinim writes inter-alia: '''The Chinchinim church building was completed by the Jesuits in 1590. The Jesuit historian Fr. Sebastian Gonsalves S.J. adds however that the church was built in Deussua . Dr. Loyola Furtado further asks: In which place in Deussua as we know it today was the Church of OL of Hope built ? and then answers : the hypothesis that the site in which the Church today stands belonged in times past to Deussua Comunidade seems to be acceptable. If we accept the theory that missionaries normally built churches over the ruins of Hindu temples , then it is highly probable that the first Chinchinim Church was built over the ruins of the temple at Devular because till today paddy fields surrounding Devular are owned the Comunidade of Deussua and the Church was later built in its present day location i.e. Secreamvaddo/ Dandeavaddo. By the way, Devular today is the property of the family of nineteen century Latin Professor, Advocate, Acting Judge and President of DIU Municipality namely Adv. Laurente Menezes Antonio
