SESA FOOTBALL ACADEMY PLAY OUT A 2-2 THRILLER AGAINST VELSAO SCC

21st November, Panaji: Sesa Football Academy (SFA) scored in the dying
minutes of the game to level against Velsao SCC (VSCC) in a thriller
that ended 2 - 2 at full time. The round 10 of ongoing GFA Goa Pro
League was played at Sesa Football Academy, Sirsaim. The game started on
a very positive note for SFA as Olvin dropped to the right-wing to
collect the ball and crossed it inside the box towards Richard Cardoz.
SFA winger converted it in the back of the net with a sublime header
past the opposition keeper Alison in the 3rd minute.

SFA continued to strike forward as Olvin attempted a shot on goal from
close range in the 10th minute. However, a defensive error by SFA
center-back Myran allowed Velsao strikers Joseph and Romario to strike
on a counter-attack and level against the hosts. Joseph scored in the
12th minute of the game from outside the box after his shot was slightly
deflected, leaving the keeper clueless. SFA had an opportunity in the
20th minute from a freekick in a dangerous position as Olvin delivered a
cross inside the box which met Melvin Lobo's head and just went wide off
the target. VSCC captain Joseph troubled SFA defense as a pass from
number 9 Edward from the midfield allowed the striker to attempt a shot
on goal. SFA keeper Hansel Coelho saved the shot and referee awarded a
corner for VSCC.

Joseph tried to attempt another shot on goal after a cross was delivered
from the corner kick but it went wide. In the 42nd minute, Richard
delivered a lob pass inside the opposition box from a freekick. The ball
was defended well by Sadik but Russel was quick to regain possession for
SFA and passed it towards the danger zone. SFA center-back, Myran who
had joined the attack during the freekick met the ball and attempted a
strike before the offside flag was up at the sidelines. At the beginning
of the second half, the VSCC coach decided to change things in the
midfield as number 13 Rohan replaced number 9, Edward Kenneth.

SFA coach also changed things in the midfield as he replaced Domnic
Soares with Shridarnath Gawas. VSCC had an injury blow in the 57th
minute as number 99 Smith was stretchered off the pitch and to be
replaced by number 20 Joywin at the heart of the defense. Smith incurred
an injury after a clash with SFA center back vying for the ball in the
air. SFA midfielder Russel Vaz was shown a yellow card for a mistimed
tackle in the 66th minute. SFA continued to create chances upfront on
the left-wing as a brilliant link-up play between Richard, Russel and
Stephen allowed more room to go forward. VSCC made a substitution in the
75th minute as Romario was replaced by Jesloy upfront. SFA coach also
decided to bring on fresh legs a few minutes later as BenJohnson
replaced Richard in the attack. Lalbabu attempted a strike in the 80th
minute from 25 yards out to trouble SFA keeper but the ball went just
wide. Jesloy had a chance in the 84th minute of the game inside the SFA
box after his strike was saved by Hansel.

On what was looking like a 1 - 1 draw, after referee indicated 4 minutes
additional time at the 90-minute mark, both teams scored inside 3
minutes of injury time in what turned out to be a thriller. Joseph
Periera scored for VSCC right from outside SFA box from a half volley
that went straight in the back of the net and SFA captain Melvin Lobo
had last chance of the game for SFA from a freekick 30 yards out. Melvin
struck the ball from the freekick spot right at the top bar and it went
inside leaving no chance for keeper Alliston.

The match ended 2 - 2 at full time as points were shared at the end of a
thrilling fixture.

no man's land but Signals keeper was quick to clear it with a sliding
tackle from outside his penalty area.

Nim Ishering Bhutia caused trouble in the first half for SFA on the
right-wing as in the 21st minute, he cut inside to go past the defender
and attempted a shot on goal. The winger was denied a goal by the
goalpost and his rebound attempt went wide.
COS winger struck in the 25th minute after a pinpoint corner from number
7 Solomon was put in the back of the net. The ball was headed straight
past the keeper from close range who had no chance to save it.

Salgaonkar in the 34th minute. In the 38th minute, SFA leveled the
scoreline through Shajam struck from a neat cross delivered by Olvin
Cardozo. The ball went straight into the top left corner as SFA geared
up. Olvin gelled up well with Caitano on the right-wing after a lovely
one-two with him allowed SFA striker with a golden opportunity inside
the box. Olvin's shot was blocked by Signals goalkeeper and the referee
decided to blow the whistle for Half time.
Manto was substituted on for Signals in the second half and made a quick
impression after his shot from range struck the top post but no player
to finish on the rebound as SFA cleared the ball in the 48th minute.

In the 53rd minute, Kunal Salgaonkar made a run on the left-wing and
crossed it to Richard Cardoz inside the box. Richard managed to keep the
ball in on the far post with a one-touch pass to Olvin in the 5-yard box
who couldn't get his shot through as two defenders surrounded him.

In the 67th minute, Caitano made a lob pass from SFA half towards Olvin
who was making a run and was onside. Both Signals center-backs failed to
deal with the lob through-pass and Olvin took the opportunity to dribble
past the keeper to take the lead.
In the 73rd minute, injured Shajam was replaced by Stephen Colaco on the
left-wing for SFA. In the 77th minute, Richard fired a cross into the
box towards Caitano who hit the post.

SFA made another substitution in the 81st minute as SFA right-winger
Richard Cardoz was replaced by Omkar. Signals number 17 Pawan was
replaced by Shuklab as they rained men forward in the dying minutes of
the game. However, SFA kept possession of the ball in the final quarter
of the game and sealed all three points.

Indians win hearts, lose plot

India 1 (Khaled Muftah – 54th – own goal)

drew with

Qatar 1 (Mohamed Elneel)

For all the talent, thrust, preparation and dominance the slate stays
blank for India’s U-23 squad. Their dreams of making it to the 2012
London Olympics ended at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune on
Thursday.

A match which India should have won handsomely ended 1-1. Result:
India’s London Dreams ends. Qatar who won the first leg 3-1 at the Al
Sadd Stadium won 4-2 on aggregate.

As the Indians headed to the tunnel after the end of the match, they
couldn’t help pondering why the Almighty thought it best to conspire
against them.

Instance 1: Striker Jeje Lalpeklua failed to tap it in with the
goalkeeper at his mercy in the 10th minute – Raju Gaikwad’s first
throw-in putting him in a scoring position.

Instance 2: In the 19th minute, Lalrindika Ralte failed to convert
from the spot, a diving Sadd Al Sheeb palming his effort away. The
spot-kick was awarded after Murad Hussein handled Jeje’s shot in the
box.

Instance 3: Shilton D’Silva fails to connect Jewel Raja’s shot from
inside the box in the 44th minute. Again, it was all initiated by
another of Raju’s long-throws.

Instance 4: Jeje fails to put it past the rival goalkeeper in the 71st
minute from a hand-shaking distance.

In between, the Indians had surged into the lead as Khaled Muftah
slotted it into his own net in the 54th minute only for Qatar’s
Mohammed Elneel to volley it in past Laxmikant Kattimani. That was the
only scoring chance Qatar had.

“We were distinctly unlucky not to win,” Coach Desmond Bulpin uttered.
National Team Coach Armando Colaco standing next who had come all the
way from Delhi, besides lauding Bulpin and his boys said: “The future
of Indian football stays in safe hands.”

The Indians pressed hard and didn’t allow the ‘technically better,’
Qatar side the maneuvering space in the midfield. Unlike the first-leg
in Doha Hasan Al Haydos wasn’t allowed the space by the Indian
midfield. Jewel Raja and Shilton closing him up.

Post-match consolations came from every corner. This is India’s
best-ever performance against Qatar. Spare a thought for India’s U-21
boys. They should have been there in the next round – but life is not
always a dream.

Goalkeeper: Laxmikant Kattimani, Defenders: Abhishek Das (Jagtar
Singh), Arnab Mondal, Raju Gaikwad, Gurjinder Kumar. Midfielders:
Lalrindika, Jewel Raja (Milan Singh), Shilton D'Silva, Jibon Singh.
Forwards: Jeje Lalpeklua, CS Sabeeth (Manandeep).
