Our Festival of Lights is here but in Goa its gloom and doom on all fronts. There can be no festivity with potholed roads everywhere, very erratic water and power supply. Besides, due to lack of vision and prompt corrective measures, the Goan economy continues in a muddle bringing no cheer to the small businesses in particular. The common man is suffering and Public agitations across Goa are galore. We are facing the brunt of that endless greed of our politicians who are adding more concrete buildings to an already badly battered Goa without caring to first put the required basic infrastructure in place and with no respect for our fragile and deteriorating environment. The garbage and sewage discharge problem has reached a point of crisis and the government has also failed to tackle the chronic stray dogs and cattle menace. Proper healthcare needs to be provided to the poorest of the poor in hospitals and health centers across the State as we cannot allow lives to be lost on account of lack of proper medical care. Creating quality educational facilities and delivering a good and dependable public transport system should have been the thrust of those in Power. Instead they have successfully transformed Goa into a Gambling, Prostitution, Narcotics and Crime hub. For a State exchequer reeling under acute financial distress, as an austerity measure the government should have stayed away from pompous needless projects, while also not funding and being part of extravagant expenditure. On account of the intentional follies of this uncaring government we are today left to partake in the Festival of Darkness with not even a glimmer of hope or a chink of light at the end of a dark tunnel. But let us still hope that the government burns its demons of personal greed, neglect and incompetence so that the people of Goa can celebrate a victory of good over evil and by so doing we can hope and pray for a miracle that at least Diwali 2021 will be full of glow and a real Festival of Lights worth celebrating. The Goa government over the years has bit by bit and purposely making the much needed authorities defunct. The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has now become totally non-functional with the term of the lone serving member AD Salkar now coming to an end. The GHRC has been headless since the Chairperson Justice PK Misra retired in March 2016 while the other member JA Keny passed away in September 2018. Similarly the Goa State Police Complaints Authority has come to a grinding halt after the Chairman Justice RMS Khandeparkar relinquished office in April 2017. The government has also intentionally kept the Lokayukta without providing him the necessary infrastructure including an investigative team to probe all the scams and corruption that our State in embroiled in. It is a very sorry state of affairs that the government is frustrating the functioning of these independent authorities who are constituted to deliver justice and bring the wrong doers to book. It is a fit case for our High Court to Suo Motu step in. It is absolutely inappropriate to be solely blaming Goa’s Tourism Minister Babu Azgaonkar for the Tourism mess and the steep decline of Tourists in the State. In 2012 the BJP led by Manohar Parrikar rode to Power with a thumping majority after promising a Parivartan by way of Good Governance and Zero Tolerance to Corruption. But while Manohar Parrikar over the years has remained only engrossed targeting and blackmailing his political opponents all the pressing issues concerning the State have remained sadly unattended to. For the tourists whether entering Goa by Air, Rail or Road, the welcome at the Airport, Railway stations or Bus stands has been grubby with that first impression about Goa being very distasteful. Our once pristine beaches are today infested with dogs, cattle and heaps of litter all over. In the name of beach cleaning it is only the State coffers that have been over the years merrily emptied. The traffic police instead of working towards good traffic management have been focusing on fleecing every tourist possible. The sight of tourists on two wheelers being skinned around the Divya Circle in Panaji is horrifying. I have on so many occasions personally spoken to the DGP Dr Muktesh Chander on this but for reasons best known to him he has been helpless. How can we expect quality tourists to descend in a Goa which is today reduced to a drug, prostitution, gambling and crime hub? Manohar Parrikar while in the Opposition had screamed over the roof top against Casinos and even led an agitation demanding their closure but after becoming Chief Minister has allowed the menace of Casinos to proliferate while brazenly enlarging them all possible government patronage. So the buck stops at the door of the Chief Minister for all the serious problems the State is today facing. Now the only way forward to resolve the Tourism and other issues grappling Goa is to have a dynamic Chief Minister who with a vision and passion can pull Goa out of the woods. But this will not happen as long as the now physically incapacitated Manohar Parrikar adamantly continues to shamelessly and selfishly hang on to the Chief Minister’s Chair hoping that he will be assured of a ‘Statue’. Earlier our Goa which is the smallest State of India was so well administered with just four Ministers. Today we are lumbered if not hijacked by a jumbo cabinet of twelve and almost half of them are suffering with acute health issues with some hospitalized. And one of them on account of an overdose of potency enhancing pills while he was on that sex escapade at Mumbai on 5th of June and that too shamelessly with his very own relative. At least his hospitalization may have spared other females from being victims of that Powerful Minister’s never ending lust. A very sorry State of affairs. Under the guise of Goem, Goenkar and Goenkarponn, it has been Fot, Foting and Fotingponn all the way. God is watching and will not spare these bandits. Time to liberate Goa from these political mercenaries. We have to find a way Forward to rescue Goa from the current political anarchy and to restore democratic values while safeguarding for posterity what little remains of our once beautiful and tranquil State. This Manohar Parrikar led cocktail government which completes a year on 14th March is enveloped in deep rooted rampant corruption, nepotism and sheer bad governance. A year of confusion, contradictions and controversies with an unending string of U Turns and reneged promises. The people of Goa are being distracted and kept entertained with a string of festivals. From Kite to Bird and Fish it has been festivals galore while the financially bankrupt State is sinking by the day. Under the guise of Goem, Goenkar and Goenkarponn, it has been Fot, Foting and Fotingponn all the way. We have to find a way forward to rescue Goa from the current administrative anarchy and to restore democratic values while safeguarding for posterity what little remains of our once beautiful and tranquil State. Does the crafty Town & Country Minister Vijai Sardesai need any further proof that Goa’s remaining hills and fields are under a blatant assault. Vijai Sardesai should stop lecturing us with all his empty rhetoric and honestly admit that all the illegalities are going on with his tacit blessings. And we now know why he ushered in administrative chaos and anarchy in the Town & Country Planning department by appointing three Chief Town Planners. And those flying squads in the Collectorate have become toothless with the Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte having conveniently clipped their wings. Less said the better on Rohan Khaunte’s integral link with the land mafia. Infact on account of the entire cabinet being closely connected with the land sharks, a Green Goa is now swiftly being reduced to a concrete jungle enveloped with Coal. Town & Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai and the Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte need to act swift and crack down on the rampant land filling, hill cutting and blatant illegal constructions going on across Goa. It is very distressing to see the rampant unlawful land filling going on all over the Merces-Chimbel area adjoining Ribandar which is all leading to a catastrophic environmental hazard.
