[Goanet] Samaritans
I would like to thank all of you who Emailed me both privately and on Goanet. You have reinforced my belief that a human being is inherently good and we try our best to help those in need. Yes, I would very much like to put energy in starting Samaritans in Goa...thank you Gabe for sending me all those great links, and thank you Selma and Frederick for your insightful words.I apologize if I missed referring to anyone. I need help , specially from those of you located in Goa. I do not know the system in Goa or what it would take to start this kind of a project. I know from experience, just in dealing with small things, how frustrating it can be to accomplish anything in Goathat is why I admire those of you who have established yourselves in Goa and keep a positive attitude no matter what. You are right Florianohow can we man a 24 hr hotline if we can't even depend on Electricity for 24 hrs? I suppose in cases like this we ask for a touching from God.. I think the way to move forward on this is to the educated youngsters involved in this. So your best bet with help from some one in the know in Goa, would be to get Xaviers mapusa and Navelim College of arts students involved. The students have a hunger to do something positive...any challenge, they will relish. I am sure the Principals of both Colleges would be more than helpful in progressing Goa -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.
[Goanet] Samaritans
Dear Celina, I applaud you for your initiative. I wish I was in Goa and I would definitely have done some leg-work with you. After reading the topic on Goanet, someone informed me that Samaritans are in operation in India. http://www.karmayog.com/ngos/samaritanshelpline.htm As yet, we do not have a branch in Goa. I suspect one easy way would be to get in touch with the branch in Mumbai and see if they are keen to lend their support in opening one in Goa. I suspect, if the idea takes seed, the various womens groups in Goa would be keen to assist. It isn't too difficult to get in touch with Audo Viegas, who is a prominent women's rights activist. She is from Margao. The main problem will be getting relevant funds organised. In this, Samaritans Mumbai might be able to give us an idea of how to go about raising funds. Perhaps in the beginning, a low budget operation would suffice, getting volunteers and their numbers listed. Suicide and depression are more prevalent among women than men. Men tend to medicate their mental health problems through alcohol, drugs and sexual excessiveness. Please do let me know if there is some way I can help to take this forward. best, selma
