I don't know enough about the system to respond to the rest of your comments. I am generally leery of anything that involves setting CFLAGS in the environment, but it may be appropriate here.
I'd like to see comment from somebody who knows more about the Rootless internals, but I am willing to review and apply patches that have had some user testing or other demonstration of soundness. I do think it is a useful tool to keep available. -Michael
