Thanks for that Paul, the previous precompiled gdal had a bug when importing files certain files that I needed. I did come across the problem with libraries not being found: libpng13.dll and zlib1.dll. I just renamed the files I had (libpng.dll and libz.dll from the old wingrass-extralibs
