thank you very much for quick advice - for one of the students
osgeo4w-winGRASS6.4.3 works along ArcGIS10.1
so we will try this out in the lab as well and report back. Hopefully this will
solve the problem,

Hello Helena,
can you, please, run GRASS from CMD? Just right click GRASS icon,
choose "properties" and cd in CMD window to specific folder to execute
whatever command you see in "properties" window. This could help to
rule out other problem sources besides Python clash.

did you activated to download the needed microsoft runtimes? it's on the
download tab (ms files and sample datasets) during the installation of the
standalone installer.

I am sorry to report that WinGRASS6.4.3-1 does not run on our lab
computers.

It is worrisome that the final release is more problematic than RC2, b
