In the center of the bottom status bar there should be a drop
down to select the "mode" of the status bar. You can select "Show
Comp. Extent". Then that checkbox appears on the left.

I am running GRASS 7.4.4 on MacOSX. I clicked on "Show Current Region
Extent in Map Display". This created a red box on the display - as
advertised.
I now want to turn it off and cannot find any way of doing it!
